Hi guys,
As I had mentioned earlier, I was expecting the parts to arrive last week, and they arrived as expected in time before the weekend. So as the weekend was here, I knew my Saturday was sorted.
What did I order and why
White LED Parking Lights, they go well with the overall stance of the car and the yellowish parking lights with the white throw of bi-xenon looked odd. Hence ordered the part via Amazon, link though present 2 posts above, posting here again.
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
LED Fog Lamps, While most of us would say, adding white lights in Fogs is a big no-no, however, I needed to add powerful lights to supplement not so great bi-xenon. One thought process was to upgrade to Osram Night Breakers or Equivalent Philips bulbs. But was not confident about how much gain it would have over the current setup. Another thought process was, add LED to Fogs, which will improve the throw further without creating much fuss about it. Probably, I was sacrificing the throw of lights during fogs, but on all another occasion, it would give a better throw on the road.
Installation & Coding
Installation of both the products was pretty straightforward. Both the products were plug and play, with some minimal coding required for the same. So with the expectation of finishing the work in not more than 30 minutes, I head out to fit the parts. But then do things happen the way you wish them to happen? What should have taken 30 mins, took 2 hours, and what had a simple solution, we kept thinking of complex resolutions.
I reach the service station. Take the car in the bay, to fix the new LED’s the entire fog lamp assembly had to be dismantled. We remove both the assemblies, disconnect the power supply, install the new LED’s, connect the power supply, refit the entire assembly. Crank the car, switch on the lights, the system throws an error. But the new Lights don’t work. Somehow the fogs are not getting the power. Ok, our genius mind thinks, this must be a coding problem. We quickly connect the ODIS, run the steps in ODIS to match the coding, save all the values, the error is now gone. So we crank the car. Voila, the LED’s still won’t work.
Few calls here and there to fellow bhpian’s Kapil & Rohan just to figure out, are we missing something. We try doing a couple of other things. Again reset the entire values, now this time before cranking the car, thinking, hope things work now. Bang, the LED’s still won’t work.
So we open the assembly, remove the LED’s, connect back the old bulbs, re-crank the car, but this time the bulbs are working. So we think, probably, something wrong with the LED. While all this is happening, I am also trying to connect with Harry, who somehow is not available, coz he was the only one who had installed the same LED’s in his Superb and he exactly knew the steps.
I and Rohan come to a conclusion, something wrong with the LED’s so, for now, let’s change back to the original bulbs. And while the guy is almost done the fitting with the Fogs, Harry calls up. This is the conversation we both have.
Me: Bhai, the LED’s won’t work, they are not powering up.
Harry: Did you connect the other way?
Me: No, we connected one way.
Harry: Dude, LED’s can be connected both ways, try the other way.
Me: I say ok, be online
Me to the technician: Open the assembly and try connecting the LED’s both ways.
He connects one way, it does not lit up, he connects the other way, and the LED powers up.
That moment, ladies and gentlemen, I realized, solutions to complex problems are mostly simple. clap:
I to Harry all excited as the damn thing worked: Dude, you just called in nick of time. This damn thing is working and it’s looking awesome with a brilliant throw.
With LED’s working fine now and the parking light bulbs changed to LED’s we refitted the fogs, cleared all the fault codes in the system and headed back happily.
Posting few pics of WIP and how LED fogs have lightened up the road further.

Feel free to raise any queries, would be glad to help.
Thanks for sharing, Sawnilrules! Moving your incredibly useful post to a new thread for the benefit of other Octavia owners.

thank you, bro. Now thankfully the night vision has improved. It still remains to be seen how this combination would work in rains.

Are there any viable P&P upgrades to the main headlamps? Black Friday deals everywhere with 25% off. |
There are multiple from the likes of Osrams to Philips to Morimotos. Again, considering the cost that they come at and not so remarkable difference in the intensity of lights, I doubt if they make any sense. Best is to live with what we have and then when we upgrade from here, looks at specifically upgrading to cars with better lighting.

a pair of decent new generation LEDs (Philips LUMILEDs/Luxeon or CREE XHP70_ will cost a bomb (~10K + for a pair)
Better alternative is to source a high quality chinese bulb which has philipls LUMILEDs chips put on them
these Ranges from 4-6K for a pair.
I have been using them for almost an year now with no issue.
PS: I prefer philips LUMILEDs over Cree XHP 50/70 for a simple reason of most accurate FILAMENT simulation. The 3xPhilips LUMILED arrangement just mirrors the Halogen Filament perfectly atleast in 2 axis (Remember Halogen is 360% burn)
Pics of my H7 HIGH Beams:
1. Philips Lumileds are tiny compared to CREE/COB LEDS
this is for a reason - see next pic
2. Can you spot the LEDs behind the Halogen Filament? look closely
there small size give perfect aliment hence use the bulb reflector housing to the maximum. some reflector only have side wise reflector elements and some have top down, check yours and align the LEDs accordingly to get minimum wastage.
Wow! This looks great. Love the intensity and spread of the light here!
Could you share the Make / Model & Type of the LED bulb you purchased and price you paid for the same.
Do share the link if it was purchased online.
The LED fogs look really good.
I also have a question to all the team bhpians in Mumbai. I have a Hyundai Fluidic Verna. The stock headlamps and the fog lamps are really bad and the performance in highways drives is awful and sometimes even dangerous. I want to know the cost and what kind of headlamps and fog lamps options are available in Mumbai? I am open to installing HID's or LED lamps. But I have heard that the fog lamp setup in the Verna is a bit weird and getting the bulbs for the same is difficult.
P.S: Mods request you to kindly shift this thread the relevant category if incase it this question does not belong here

What's the stock bulb type for both headlight and fogs?

Do you have a projector setup in the car or a regular setup for headlights? Basis that you can choose to buy bulbs of Osram. The Night Breaker series are good, however, finding them in stock with someone is a challenge. Probably, if you know some accessories dealer, you can ask him to procure for you and then get that installed. Most of them are plug and play.
I always thought that the octavia had a lovely Bi-Xenon + AFS set up. Surprised to hear that you and other owners are not satisfied with it. Generally Skoda has better lights than VW, strange but can be seem in the tiguan vs FL octy, where the tiguan has the basic set up like the vento highline/ GTI whereas Octy has a proper AFS LED set.
I upgraded the fogs of my polo to H11's and the main lights are GTI bi-xenons which have halogen high beam along with bi-xenon high+low. Very satisfied with that set up.

Mine is the standard conventional type of headlight setup and I am currently using Phillips Xterme Vision H4 headlamps. I have used Osram Night Breakers before, but even they are kind of very weak. The headlamp issue is faced by many Verna owners and I guess HID is the only useful option, So I wanted to know if there are any good Headlamp experts/installers in Mumbai

I am planning to change headlamps (double barrel), fog lamp and parking lamp of my 2016 Vento Highline DSG with Philips LED ultinon range. They are now available with
AMAZON.IN H7, H8/11/16, T10
My only concern was on the error codes, will I also get error codes just by swapping halogens with similar LED, if yes how can I clear them because VW service centres are not willing to do the swap hence I may need to get it done outside.

What's you take on Philips Ultinon, any experience about these?
Thank you in advance.
Cheers!

Ultinon is based on Luxieon chips which are really nice. They are also precise to simulate the Filament.
