For a mild state of tune, a stock replacement would be the best VFM option.

and yes adi99, that is not a CAI and our tiny engines cannot utilize K&N's very much since they are usually rated for cars with much higher power outputs.

i use a green cotton wind CAI and no i do not have a clue if my BHP has increased and i do not care if my mileage has increased or decreased but i just love the way it has freed up my swift's already free revving engine :)

coupled with FFE it surely makes driving all the more fun and ultimately that's all that matters...


the appolo is a closed intake system and the typhoon is a cold air intake...
well the funny part is that even the guy at methods could really tell me the difference..
and hey i think there are about 2 variants in the CAIs a completely closed and one with a heat shield..
and then there is the ram air which again i feel is pointless for the purpose here...if it were a turbo then maybe but not NA.

just stick to a conical.youll be happy.:)

where as the conical has a larger face exposed and i feel is better.
a universal cone K&N costs about 3.8k the stock replacement is around the same too.so isnt the cone a better VFM product?

The conical will be better VFM provided you are able to maintain it properly.You have to make sure it's protected during the rains and also when you send the car for servicing.Damage to the conical during a car wash is a risk you will have to safeguard against.

AFAIK, the typhoon kits are available only for VRs, Civic and other powerful cars. Unfortunately we swift owners have no option to buy typhoon kits, so I call my setup CAI ;)

the rains are not a problem at all if its located properly.as for cleaning i agree the K&N conicals are a pain but the pipercross filters are way more simpler and practical..

nah man the typhoons arent really car specific.. i had it in my lancer and my friends running it in his viva.and a lot of my friends are running the pipercross viper CAI in their swifts..

You mean the K&N Typhoon kits right? When I asked the dealer for typhoon, he specifically said no typhoons for Swift, only extremes. Lancer and Viva are big cars (more CC than Swift), so I think its available for these cars.

Anyways I dont have the Swift P anymore, however I will ask the dealer once again to confirm when I see him next time.

Intake air temperature vs. power
Engine power is related to air intake temperature.
perhaps - mCp(t1-t2) is applicable somehow (will look up, and put here later..)

Intake Temperature-- Power Loss-- Example Power Output


20C----------------------- 0%----------------------- 200bhp
40C----------------------- 3.5%-----------------------193bhp
60C----------------------- 7%----------------------- 186bhp
80C----------------------- 10%-----------------------180bhp
100C-----------------------13%-----------------------174bhp

We can definitely think of a indigenous DYI "intercooler" setup to take care of the temperature issue here ( even if that means a couple of degrees.. or more!!-who knows..)
another solution is given in the attachment


One basic idea I have for a 'adjustable-freeflowIntake':
We can have encased filters (i.e. in series),
say, with restriction of 2 filters in series = restriction of single (more denser) filter
e.g. OEM Single filter=100micron, the 2-series-filters = 140~150 micron
The outer filter however can be parted to keep single filtration (translates to lesser restriction intake= free-er intake)
meaning,
OEM restriction: 100 micron worth,
1-of-the-2-filters restriction: 140 micron worth,
<Note: lesser the micron size, more the restriction>
Normal requirement: double filters running- result- cleaner air than single filter !! - with some added restriction, wondering howmuch will that be though! ( will work on that..)

Power requirement: One filter splits *(manually)- result- free-er intake than single filter (OEM)= better revving! (sacrifice on cleanness of air wont be too much I guess- just shedding 20-30% cleanness from stock- only in power mode-that is)

* we can do some settings so that some key in the dash, can split the inner filter, on key release, the springs will pull back the filter in circuit. --that kinda arrangement.

Will try to sketch it to make it clear to all, what I want to say..

Whoa, if those numbers are true, just goes to show how much more potential our conicals have. The K&N I had in my Vtec had its mouth positioned right in the engine bay. Translated : breathing in hot air. Now imagine how much better the engine would run if it was a true cold air intake i.e sucking air from outside the bonnet area.

When the car is moving, under-hood temperatures are not so high compared to outside temperatures.

@Driverace: That was very useful information regarding the Intake air
temperature vs. power.

Well, i own a OHC 1.5. What would you guys suggest to start with for
performance mods. Budget anywhere less than 20 k to start with. I can
upgrade as and when i start getting used to the power. I am also looking
at an increased top end without compromising on the current low-mid range.

well this one guy had a K&N universal cone on his palio D,a guy in his desire and a replacement filter on a swift D.

well no real change in the swidt but the other 2 yes..

My friend put an HKS Foam Filter ( The ghetto circular one) in his nissan patrol and got amazing results. He earlier had a K&N conical and he actually tossed it in the bin after installing the HKS. But then it was thrice the price of the K&N. Are K&N's actually that useless ?
