I was just thinking about the struggling I had to do yesterday while taking a right turn into heavy traffic during a strong spell of rain. Since the window on my side was being lashed with rain water, I had to keep rolling it down only partially, for some visibility, but I kept getting wet in the process.

While thinking and searching for a solution, I found this link :

The inventor claims this can be used for the side windows as well. Is anything like this available in the market ? If not, any other solutions to this problem ?

How long does one application of Rain-x last ? Also wouldn't using it on the front windscreen be useless as when you put the wipers on the Rain-x will get wiped out too.

Rain-x should last a few months before reapplication, wish i could find it here, the local carz spa has it, but won't sell a bottle, i think he does a single application for around 500bucks, a bit too steep.

try something else bro, adding side window wipers will give people some pics for w&w section of tbhp.

Hey I love the idea of having Wiper for side window. Personally I don't feel any weird thing about it. If so, the most weird are the top class sedans where they have wipers for Head light.

I am in if we have such items available in india. Otherwise DIY using the motorized one which old buses (also autos) uses. But this will not be easy job as we can't fix it at bottom and on top to mound on roof will be quite difficult job.

Will have a look, somehow i don't think i'll find it in Goa....

You could get a set of window visors. Made out of acrylic these are easily available in accessory shops. These allow you to roll your window about an inch or so without getting wet.

Is it really necessary for everything to be motorized ? it is actually not that big a problem to see through droplets of water , they are transparent you know.Anyways if it is muddy water roll the windows down and up again.

@Srini, how long does an application of "Clearview" last ? Wonder what's the price, for the bottle shown.

A mechanised solution is possible, for incorporation by all cars as optional fitment, in my opinion. The wiper and motor needs to be mounted / attached to the window itself at the bottom, so that the wiper always operates on the window glass, and doesn't hang out in the air when the window is rolled down :D. By this, I mean that the entire wiper assembly always moves up and down with the window, even when it is rolled down by mistake.
The wiper, when at rest, should be below the window cut out, and appear through a rubber seal when it needs to wipe the window, and get retracted into the door well when not in use. This should take care of the aesthetics that Sahil was worried about, since the wiper will be invisible when not in use !
Wonder if car manufacturers could do this, and offer it as an option. Sealing of the door cavity against water ingress is the main problem to be overcome here, but I am sure this could be worked out, with some more thought.

You get manually operative wipers for the auto rickshaw easily. Why not get them? They are operated by a rod/lever ion the inside but alas they will not work on a side window unless it were fixed as the need to be mounted on something permenantly

@khoj, after you mentioned this, I looked around and saw this on many cars yesterday. Some of them looked really cool. Wondering how this will look on a Scorpio. Thanks a lot for the tip !

@V-16, that's a nice alternative! I should try to do some thinking to see if I can launch from this idea, to find myself a solution, if possible.


Yesterday, I bought a small bottle of a concentrate liquid (65 Rs. for a tiny bottle). Will try it out. In my hurry, I forgot to ask the accessory shop whether this can be mixed in the windshield liquid reservoir. I will check the finely printed instructions on the cover and proceed accordingly. For the side windows, of course, I will have to wipe them manually with the solution, when my cars get their wet wipes in the morning :)

That's an interesting thought, fitting a wiper for the side doors. However, you would need more space in the door frame to mount the wiper motor assembly and a wider gap through the rubber lining for the wiper to come out, wipe the glass and then move back in. A wider gap here will expose the internals in the door frame to the elements, so I doubt if this design would be sucessful.

Also what about if the window is rolled down and the door wiper were to be operated? It will most likely damage/dislocate the wiper.

Window visors can be surely fitted on a Scorpio as I have seen many Scorpios with it. A precautionary measure is if you have butterfly windows at the back, you won't be able to open them fully, as it may break the visor. Also the visors will only allow you to open up your window for an inch or so in rains, without the rains entering into the vehicle. Not much use for the situation you described.

The best option would be to use the blower/AC to keep all the windows clear in heavy rains.

Use Lenshine, I got it free form my optician, it is suitable for 2 applications on all glass and windows don't fog up inside during rains, also, on outside, water does not stay for long. It is good for about a week(outside) and 1 month(inside).
