Hi guys, I'm contemplating importing an engine from the US or UK for an engine swap. As far as I've seen, one needs to pay the standard customs duty of 36% & also a 200% penalty (I guess it's to protect the local auto industry).

My question is, if I can have the seller dismantle the engine into it's various parts & dispatch them in 2 or 3 shipments, would one still need to pay the 200% penalty ? Would our Customs consider the separate components as spare parts & charge only the duty of 36% ?

stupid question: is the 200% penalty for new engines or even the used ones?

Also, a request to the experts. Would help if they can throw some light on the whole process. What all is involved in importing an engine (new/used) from a country like UK.

I don't think they make a distinction between old & new engines - the penalty's 200% of what you paid for it - the invoiced amount.

I think, if you have the engine disassembled & shipped as parts (probably as separate shipments) you'll end up paying the duty alone. In this case, the whole is worth more than the sum of it's parts !

Why don't you source from closer home? Check this thread (Engine Graveyard - Where old engines go to die..) out for more information.
