Got the Contour Roam with the Watersports Kit for just $99 on a black friday amazon goldbox sale. Someone will carry it down for me from the US.
Bought some extra mounts as well.
Was actually interested in buying the GoPro, but at this price, it was a no brainer for me.
Gonna use it for 4x4 activities Attachment 1018528 |
It's finally arrived:

I am looking to get a Dashcam for my Skoda Yeti as well. I have a few questions for people who have experimented/used car cameras:
1) What is the best mount location - on dash, windsheild, outside car?
2) Battery life - how long do the batteries last on the cheapo ebay dash cams in real world usage - I hate wires going from the ciggarette lighter located near the gear box to the windsheild
Also, I was wondering - do things like GoPro do loop recording?

Check the pic I posted earlier about the cam position. Mine is behind my mirror (so doesn't affect my visibility) and I've hard wired it to the ignition and run the wires concealed under the beading.

Thanks! And you are right, the best mount position is behind the mirror. I am though, not veyr keen to play around with the electrical system of my skoda - bit wary of what it may do to the warranty status, especially since its skoda. Hence the need for a camera with a good 3-4 hour battery life and replacable batteries.
Just a question though - from a video quality perspective, are you able to read number plates off the video output from your camera?

Yes, the HERO3s do support it. They can also run on external power.
Do double check that the white / silver edition HERO3s can do it. I know the Black with the latest firmware can for sure.

Any idea about Dashboard Cameras?
What I mean is, I want it to rest on the dashboard, not hang using a suction cup from the windshield.
Availability in India would go a long way. No budget as such.

This just sounds like the camera is going to slide around everywhere!
Most of these cameras come with a 1/4-20 tripod mounting screw at the bottom. You could use that to make a mount.
The GoPro comes with stick-on pads that it can clip in and out of quickly.

Experimenting with my Galaxy Note (N7000) and TrackRecorder. Works very well but need to check video file sizing and looping options.

My dash mount is also damaged and vibrating even more with the weight of the Note. Planning for an Arkon mount going forward.

Do post a review Tejas. I've been wanting to buy a HD camera but the cost factor for the GoPro's makes it out of my reach.
I checked the Contour
site and it only lists the Contour+2 and Contour Roam2. However eBay.com has the one you picked up for US $ 99.
Any idea how this fares compared to the GoPro? People rave about GoPro but this one is within reach so considering it for now.
I'm mostly going to use it while riding/touring on my ninja.
Looking forward to a detailed write-up.
Haven't used it yet! :p
Going for the Valley Run this weekend. Will probably use it on one of the cars there and revert.
I use Garmin for dashboard camera, I guess I posted that on some other thread. I'm satisfied with the quality so far, though haven't got many videos out as yet. There were a few from my Uttarakhand trip and few from the forest drive around Ooty, but not much. I have it ON all the time when I drive, its an attachment/extension to my GPS device (2565). Came for about 3K to me over ebay, but I spent around 10K on my GPS device earlier so thought of making it to full use.

During my recent trip, I have got Gopro H3BE. Again, I'm yet to put it to good use since I made a mistake and didn't get all the required accessories. I have got only bike mount + head mount thinking I will be using it for my bike trips + trekking trips around. Missing the wrist housing and car mount now. I read about a trick to use head mount for wrist housing, searching for the wrist strap now so that I can use it during my next Wonder-la visit :)

Car mount will still be missed until I get it either from Ebay or find another/safer way to do it.
I ordered the following car dvr from Ebay yesterday. It has twin cams. Shall provide review once i get it by next week.
