Re: Yamaha RX100 restoration - From bits & pieces

For the past 2 days I spent most of the time detailing couple of cars and the scooter at home, and RX is left out. Took her for a spin yesterday after a week of hibernation.

Washing and detailing will be done tomorrow

Here is the final outcome, and I figured out the issue is not with the bulb but with the reflector. It still leaves the black portion in high beam

Since I planned Kodaikanal trip for the new year, thought of adding LED aux lamp until I change the reflector this weekend. Bought this 10W LED (pair)

Fixed on the cross bar, though it looked neat from front

Eyesore from the rear. Removed it

After multiple trials, fixed this position

Completed the wiring with additional toggle switch next to the throttle. +ve tapped from Horn and GND from the horn mounting screw

Aligned the position, still it will glare the on-coming traffic. Only self discipline could help

After completing all this last night, slept with peace and confidence that I can do the Kodai trip with better lighting than the last couple of trips to Valparai and Ooty. And guess what, it's raining without a break from this morning

Re: Yamaha RX100 restoration - From bits & pieces

My 1997 RXG seems to have a Mikcarb on it instead of the stock one. My mechanic says the Mikcarb might be from the RX100. So is there any way to identify if its for the RX100 or the RXG/RX135? Like the stock ones have the 4TLxxx number is there something similar on these that distinguish them?

Aftermarket Mikcarb don't come with any identification is what I understand. Check the jet sizes to confirm

Yes,

AFAIK the RX 135's had 4TL01 written on it. Majority of the 135's had this and only a few rare ones had the UCAL ones.

The 4 speed Rx's came with Mikuni VM22 carbs.

Mikcarb's are either VM24 carbs which are used in the RE350 and a direct fit on the Rx series albeit with jetting changes and VM20 carbs for Rx 100 in my knowledge.

Upgraded the headlamp to 7" (Yezdi dome)

Aftermarket HL basket for roadking & Hella 7" sealed beam. I prefer hella over Autopal

Comparison with stock size (another Hella )

And finally it's done

HL High

HL High + Aux LED

Remarkable improvement from the previous setup.
Yet to check the performance on wet surface. If the result is satisfactory, AUX LED will be removed.

Re: Yamaha RX100 restoration - From bits & pieces

Bike is in a very sorry state now, parked at my mechanic's place for over 4 months now. Few parts were swapped from the other bike.

Mr.Boss, one question:

What's your take on effect of the E5/E10 blended petrol on these classics, esp on corrosion that is said to be possible ?
Will the 2T oil negate any of this ?

What happened? Issue due to non usage or something else?

That's Greek & Latin to me
Let's wait for experts to pitch in

Combination of both
Prepared to sell it and focus on other 2 bikes, lockdown spoiled the game and this remained at my mechanic's place in hibernation.

Re: Yamaha RX100 restoration - From bits & pieces

When it comes to old era 2 stroke discussion threads, the passion, nostalgia never ceases to amaze me.

I had to leave India 16 years ago in 2005 ago for work in search of good fortunes. I had to leave behind 2 of the prized possessions (2 1990 RX100s) back in my home town. I still remember the tough instructions to my father to take good care of them. Father being a motorhead helped the cause since he was riding a 1971 Jawa 250. He knew a thing or two about maintenance and restoration.

To this day, I still believe one day I will return to India to take possessions of those old rides and get them back to their glory. My father still uses one of RXs on a regular basis and the other one occasionally.

I have no plans to sell them of any time soon. In fact, over time I have collected some vital parts to keep'em running for foreseeable future:

1) 2 Brand New Chassis
2) 2 Brand new original Cylinder Blocks (Sourced via contacts in the UK)
3) 2 Brand new Mikuni Carburetors (Made in Japan, sourced from Japan)
4) 1 set of gladiator front fork assembly with disk brakes
5) 2 Brand new tanks and side shields (Black and Maroon)
6) Few other parts

On the one side my father curses me that the house look like a spare parts shop, I respond with a willful smile every time. On the other side, I am confident these machines are set for some more years of life.

Attaching some pictures of the RX to keep up the spirits.

That's a lovely bike, as good as a factory roll out

We are left with no other choice but to collect and secure the necessary parts to keep them running.

I'm assuming the corrosion you're talking is inside the fuel tank. If that's the case, there's a myth running around that just with 2T mixture with fuel, the fuel tank remains uncorroded for years to come. Personally, I've witnessed my old tank (used for over 15 years) remaining uncorroded due to this mixture (I had to do out of compulsion on using 28mm FS; and yes I'm stupid)

The one I'm having now is relatively new (since 2010) & most of the time the tank remains empty despite having the mix; I've to check how much of it is corroded now

Are you saying that corrosion inside the tank (when using pre-mix petrol) is a myth ? And it doesnt happen ?

But it has happened in your tank ?

Also, what is 28mm FS ?

Btw, no, not the tank. I was asking if any engine parts will get damaged.

Some of my friends have got their tank rusted & a few in the gang used to claim they were mixing for the same reason & yet the inside of the tank got rusted. So I've mixed views both due to my friends claim as well as through my experience.

Again, put it this way, I'm mixing 2T for sure, but my Rx is laying idle with near empty tank for over a year. Rust is FOR SURE; but then my claims?

Just checked mine & found there's no fuel at all , but no sign of rust yet is quite a relief. My older tank that was over 15+ year old...I don't know what to say because when I bought it was already 10 years used & I retained the old tank for not more than 9 years out of which I started the premix may be for 7 years. So hard to say whether it got rusted or the rust was arrested.

Because of ethanol? Hard to say boss, I'm not experienced mixing them.
