According to the below mentioned report in today's Praja Vani, there's been a 25% reduction in the vehicles registered due to the pillion ban.

The article also mentions that there's been a visible effect on the sales of Hero, TVS and Bajaj bikes; with rural dealerships not selling even a single unit of the bikes mentioned in the list.

Interestingly, 99.9 cc and below bikes are not being registered whilst bikes of 100 cc exactly can be registered. This is according to a regional officer (name withheld in article).

Re: Karnataka: Single and not allowed to mingle - No pillion on bikes up to 100cc

SIAM has written to Karnataka Govt to make amendments to the act prohibiting registration of two-wheelers with less than 100cc engine capacity, with a pillion seat.

Quoting from article in TOI

Quote:
SIAM also highlighted the fact that, as per Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), powers have been given to Central Government to make rules under the Central Motor Vehicle Rule (CMVR) inter-alia related to the construction of motor vehicles. Hence, as per these rules, the motor vehicles are tested at one of the notified test agencies of Government of India for certifying compliance to all emission and safety regulations notified by Government of India from time to time.

Commenting on this, Sugato Sen, Deputy Director General, SIAM, said that this is the first time in the country that such ban has been imposed. "There are no such provisions in the Central Motor Vehicles Act either. There are several popular models of motorcycles that are just below 100cc. Many of them are 99cc. SIAM has approached the state government seeking a revision of this provision of the motor vehicles rules," he said.

Re: Karnataka: Single and not allowed to mingle - No pillion on bikes up to 100cc

There have been instances when Courts have suggested Government in the state to compromise with law breaking real estate companies.

They could have asked the State Government what they think about this rule before passing the judgement earlier. Un-necessary things I would say
