Re: TVS in talks with Norton for an acquisition. EDIT: Confirmed!

Certainly a proud feeling for all Indians, reading about this acquisition.

Does this mean it's a very good time to invest in TVS motors on 20th morning?

I am thinking of selling my small holding. TVS is too conservative for this sort of thing. It's hard for me to see how they will break the mould and make money. Boutique manufacturers like MV and Norton are always struggling. Even the exotics like Aprillia and Ducati appear to be struggling. So is Harley. RE's run intially with the Classic and now the 650 twins is a hard act to replicate. If the RTR 310 is any indication TVS lacks the marketing skills to project anything remotely aspirational.

TVS participates in the Dakar and yet they don't have anything resembling a dual sport for sale. The point of sponsoring a team or an event is you want to promote a specific brand from your product line up. The actual competition bike doesn't have to be the same as street going version. Enthusiasts following the sport will turn around and see if they can buy something from the brand.

I hope I am proved wrong, TVS is otherwise a solid group. While I am at it TVS should fix that misshapen logo.

It should take at least 5 years for TVS to start from a clean slate, build products ground, set up the ditribution network plus buff up the Brand.

The Norton brand is definitely big but there is no gurantee that this TVS-Noton venture might turn successful commercially.

Therefore if you want to invest into TVS (just because of the new aquisition) do so from the Long Term Perspective (at least 10 years) and don't expect micracles immediately

Re: TVS in talks with Norton for an acquisition. EDIT: Confirmed!

Norton Motorcycles Will Not Be Manufactured In India - TVS Joint MD Sudarshan Venu.

In an interaction with carandbike, TVS Motor Company Joint Managing Director Sudarshan Venu said that Norton motorcycles will continue to be manufactured in the UK.

Quote:
"We're taking over all the employees except a few, which is basically the old management, who we're not taking over. The strong design team and assembly team is coming over to us, and we will look to leverage their strength and work with them to deliver more bikes of this storied brand. In Europe, the location is in Derby, in Donington Hall. We will move to another new location very soon, in the same region. The idea is to continue with this very talented team to get the brand back to its original glory and take it into the future,"
Quote:
To a question if there are any plans to move any of the manufacturing to India, to make it more cost-competitive, the TVS Joint MD ruled out any such consideration. He reiterated that Norton is a premium motorcycle brand, and TVS ownership will not change that. Instead, Norton will gain from the synergies of the global supply chain and network strength of TVS Motor Company.

So we can expect TVS to maintain status quo for the short term, I guess. We, in the Indian market, may see the benefits of this acquisition only 3-5 years down the line.

2) it requires INCREDIBLE effort to run an operation offshore - buying a company is just the 1%. Having seen TVS at fairly close quarters, they will need a huge amount of agility and the ability to take quick decisive actions - and that isn't really in their current skill sets.

I look forward to the ride, I hope it isn't a rough one and that TVS makes a success out of this.
Vincent ownership is a mess. The American rights to the name is currently owned by the legal head of Microsoft (Obviously a multi millionaire) while the rest of the world rights is owned by the Vincent owners club of UK. This duel has made any resurrection almost impossible.

Coming to the TVS Norton deal, IMHO it's a huge mountain to climb. Norton may not be allowed to enter India by Kinetic and in the rest of the world it's unlikely to be smooth either. It can potentially be a millstone on their neck..Only time will tell..

Why would Kinetic stop TVS from selling in India? Just because Motoroyale was the India Distributor of Norton?

I heard that they had more than a distributor status..More like a licensee for India and SE Asia. There was also talk of joint production of sub 500cc bikes for India. Not sure of all this though...

Even if what you say is true, what will Kinetic do then? Manufacture bikes and sell it under the Norton brand in India and SE Asia? And not Let TVS do that?

From the above link to MNC there were the following comments, which would suggest, "Commando" as a brand name would be available to the new owners, TVS.

If that be the case, it would be good opportunity
