Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Probably an electric bike with a 100km claimed range.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

In my view, it is just not possible to launch "RX100" without murdering the fabulous memories of the erstwhile RX100 in today's scenario. Much of the legendary RX100's performance boils down to the fact that it was powered by a 2-Stroke motor; which obviously cannot be done today due to the environmental norms. And the new "RX100" cannot be a 150 or 200 CC machine as the name screams 100. And that 100 CC can only be a 4T motor which is mostly equivalent to Splendor/ CD100 etc.

So, better to shelf the plan unless Yamaha wants to do what Maruti did to Zen by launching the Estilo.

Regards,
Saket

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

After the electric 100km range idea, the next most logical (read easy) thing to happen is YMI rebadging the pre-existing XSR155 into an RX155 and launching it here.
As pointed out earlier, already after RX100 we've got RX135, RX-G and RXZ (135).. so 155 could be the next logical successor.
YMI already have the R15V4 that can lend its peppy engine, the deltabox frame (identical to XSR155), the USD forks, and it also has a classic design that can trigger the right nostalgia flavor. Some parts from the FZX could be repurposed like the round front lamp, a little CMFG twist and done!

I had the same natural progression of life. Once you ride a KTM, it is time to say good bye to RX100. I sold my 1991 model RX100 in 2014 and naturally moved to a Duke 200. No more visible smoke and no more oil mixed petrol ! I am happy to let it go. I don't miss that 2-stroke sound and power, Duke sounds distinct and there is more than enough power.

Bringing back RX100 is like Nokia 3310. Nokia didn't have a good business by bringing back 3310. Maybe manufactured nostalgia is not a successful business formula. It was good at a certain era, but not today.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Are the marketing teams of these brands have become so shallow that they have to reprise/relaunch the legendary cult brands of past and have to paste on some run of the mill cladded with retro elements as a last minute money grab effort?

Yamaha is being very lazy here to pull out the RX-100 brand from the attic and want to do some commuter model hoping that people overwhelm with nostalgia and buy up these models. You might say I am being harsh but if you see their last decade's attention towards Indian markets and their launches then i am justified being a sceptic that I am now.

I sincerely wish Yamaha leave the RX-100 brand be where it is right now- "In our hearts and minds as a lovely memory and few passionate garages who are still restoring/maintaining the bikes and riding them".

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

I am not sure how Yamaha is going to replicate the feisty nature of a 100cc two stroke from a similar displacement 100cc four stroke. A commuter-ish 100cc engine with 8-9 bhp just won't cut it, unless they're planning a 100cc four stroke motor equipped with high compression ratio, dohc, 4 valves, vva and liquid cooling mated to a close ratio 6 speed gearbox while keeping intact the aesthetic purity of the original on the outside. However, Yamaha would play safe and launch the neo retro look xsr155 with r15's hardware (engine, chassis and brakes) under the RX 155 brand name I reckon.

A true homage for the rx100 would be the RX100 EV. A 30 bhp liquid cooled electric motor with a 200 km range and a 0 to 100 of 6 seconds would do the trick.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Let the legend not be diluted by the current engine standards. If Yamaha is bringing back the RX100, at least increase the CC and keep the other elements same, so that it would be a natural successor. Else plonking in a 100cc would kill the original vibe of the RX100.

Happy to have had one in the garage(Dad's bike)and the sheer acceleration would give me goosebumps.

Solution - 2-stroke fuel injected RX100?

I really hope the new RX100 doesn't go the Yezdi way.
Point is one just cannot recreate the 2 stroke feel on a 4 stroke. Period.
Perhaps Yamaha can take a leaf out of Royal Enfield's book and recreate something similar to the new Classic.

I guess a parallel twin 250cc engine can be a good substitute.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

In my opine, Yamaha won't bat an eyelid for what the old RX100 offered nor would they feel any disgrace slapping the RX 100 moniker to a BS6 4S 100 or 110cc. At best, what I feel though is they would, for the most part retain the RX 100 design language, get the old design under the scalpel for increased flab and launch it with the RX 100 tag name.

They should have let go off the RX moniker, and instead chose something rhyming similar as in SX or ZX because that wouldn't have caused this sentimental dire that's being echoed with the RX fanbase, including me.

Guess we'll have to wait and watch how this drama unfolds.

Cheers!

Don't reveal it so soon! And remember some of the parts from this very bike were shared on RX 135 (03 04 05) last models especially the speedo console. Well, so who knows the chances are so ripe for this to make a come back. If they can rename a Saluto to Saluto RX, why not a Crux to RX. Xs

Cheers!

Same here bought a brand new 2019 390 duke. Haven't riden the rx100 much since. Now I feel the present 4 strokes are very well capable of meeting the present requirements.

Initially I was a bit skeptical about the 390, like most I felt "nothing will replace the rx". But as I got used to riding it I realised the present gen bikes have better brakes, better tyres, better suspension and better chassis set up than the old bikes and not to mention the relentless torque post 4k rpm on 390. These were enough for me to stop using my rx.
