Re: Restoring a JDM Honda CB 350 from the 1970s

Update: Bodywork has begun. Both mudguards and silencers will be tinkered with to regain rigidity and shape. The fuel tank will be remade to the exact specification as the original.

Re: Restoring a JDM Honda CB 350 from the 1970s

Update: After consulting with the tinker, He agreed to work on both mudguards and silencers but was not so confident about making an exact replica fuel tank so took it from there in search of a tinker who can make an exact replica of the original. My search continues throughout Trivandrum city in search of a place where they can do this. Fingers Crossed.

Great restoration thread. Following this one closely I am sure this will be interesting. Are you sure you cannot salvage the original tank? There's a brilliant product called tank rescue available on Amazon you should try it out

Thank you doc, Original Tank is beyond repair. one side of the top portion is literally a hole and the inside portion is fully rusted out, there is no option to save it. Another option is to import one which will cost a bomb that's why I decided to make one using the original as a reference.

Justin, Somehow missed a lot of updates on this thread.

I agree with the member @ThebugDoc suggestion that you should salvage the original tank. Its not that much of a problem to cut out a portion of the tank and re weld it a new plate on it. The insides can be cleaned using a rust cleaner. A replica would not look nice. Just a thought.

Checked the engine yet?.

The tank is currently in beyond-repair condition Srini, I will share a couple of detailed photographs by this weekend to get a better idea of the condition. I would have chosen to save the tank if it was an option, unfortunately, it's not. My plan is to replicate by using the original as a reference so that it will look the same. Regarding the engine we checked it in detail and ordered all parts which need to be replaced, Items have reached my friends in the UK and will reach me within a couple of months. Please have a look at my previous post I have updated the ordered parts list and photographs of the parts.

Its not that bad Justin. Cut out the bad parts and weld a new plate and before doing that treat it for rust. It would be more practical that way then redoing the whole tank. No matter how much you try, an original is an original. The next best method is to try to get another original tank. I know that its costly but what can we do?. It takes a lot of metal working skill to match an original tank. Metal smiths of that caliber are rare.

Anyways its just a suggestion.

Yesterday I received a message from a guy named Moses, from Mumbai. He bought a 1969 CB 350 Twin ( K0 ) and was searching the internet for information regarding the bike and he ended up in this thread. To my amusement, one of his contacts has a CB350 Tank for sale , contacted him and he promised to send detailed photos by today if everything goes as expected will pick it up Hurray. Thanks to Team Bhp.

I am using a quote by a famous writer to express what I am feeling now

Paulo Coelho: "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

What about the Tank?. You got it from that source?. My sincere request is to get the engine work done to full before painting or fixing any cosmetics.

It didn't end up as expected, The asking price was too steep and the quality was below par so after a lot of discussions I decided to try repairing the tank I have with me(Thank you and Thebugdoc for giving me hope over the possibility of getting it fixed). The tank is now with the tinker for patch up, will update the photographs here. Regarding the course of restoration still, The 1 priority is to get the engine running in top shape, which it will once the mechanical parts arrive. I bought these cosmetics as a friend is coming shortly from us and he will bring them to me so the risk of damage is minimal considering the headlight and headlight bucket are there and both are fragile.
