Updates: Some of the goodies have arrived. Drool-worthy stuff. Pistons are ART and most of the components are OE Honda, some of the race-quality aftermarket stuff.

Glued to this tread Justin :-) Its hard to imagine how you have managed to source this many period parts of a very rare bike .

Knowing your penchant of no holds barred restorations - i am sure this is going to be a head turner .

Waiting eagerly to see this on the roads.

Thank You. I am trying all means possible to make this happen but am not alone in this there are so many friends who are supporting me with the same. More like a brother and my mechanic helped me to source all engine-related components. Another friend from the automotive circle sourced contact breaker units for my bike and these cosmetics reached me with the help of another fiatian doctor from the USA. It's more of an automotive brotherhood than an individual attempt!

Re: Restoring a JDM Honda CB 350 from the 1970s

I am confused about which option to take with the fueling as the original carbs are missing and I need to source a replacement for the same. It would be great to hear the opinions of like-minded enthusiasts from the forum regarding this!

There are 3 options -

1) Get used original Kehin 28mm CV Carbs - It will cost as much as a newer one, but with worn-out parts, Rubber parts must replaced and these age-old rubber components won't be happy with 20% Ethanol Fuel.

2) Mikuni TM 28 FlatSlides - These carbs are expensive, Even if they are great in performance fuel efficiency will be an issue, considering we are planning to use this bike regularly once restored.

3) Replacement Pair Carbs from Mikuni - These are even more expensive. The problem is that they are offering 30MM carbs with POD filters whereas the stock is 28MM with the original Airbox.

Justin,

When you have sourced so much for this bike from outside why not a carb?.

I would always keep things original. Hard lessons learnt from my CD-185. Especially with direct engine parts like carbs. Anyway if you have decided on replacement ones, check the following.

1. Main jet and idle jet sizes. Both must match the original. No messing around with this parameter.
2. Do not use all these fancy air filters. Use the original air box.
3. Your carb flange should match the manifold flange without a seal.
4. Any change to the carb would most likely affect your choke and pull cables so please be careful.

Just get an original. One headache less.

Sourcing from abroad is the only option Srini. Which one to source is the issue?

The replacement carbs are offered by Mikuni directly, they are pre-jetted for use and jets are available separately as well. Some other vendors offer cables, air filters, and manifolds with pre-jetted carbs, see a VM 28 alternative I found :

Not in this case Srini, These are 50+ year old carbs so getting used original is always risky because most of the internal parts will be worn and passages will be clogged Plus even if we replace them with newer parts ( if available -no use with NOS rubber parts ) it wont be reliable with new Ethanol fuel. That's what is worrying me.

Hows your CB Coming Up Srini ?

Re: Restoring a JDM Honda CB 350 from the 1970s

Each to its own, but I would always try to keep things original. Can’t you get an original carb completely overhauled somewhere abroad?

I am not familiar with bike carb, but I can get almost any car carb professionally overhauled. Or get the parts and di it myself.

Good luck

Tried with some online sellers from the UK, They recommend using other carbs like AMAL carbs bigger ones, I believe they all have modified their bikes mechanically as well. it would be great if there was an option to get professionally restored original carbs. I didn't have the original carbs both of them are missing unfortunately, I had one with me but that one also missing from workshop.
