Re: Upgrading the Headlight Bulb on a motorcycle

I have a 2017 RE-TBTS350, with an always-on light setup, stock low-beam projector and high-beam halogen setup. The DRL LED ring light went kaput a long time ago and the RE service stations at Navi Mumbai and Pune said the only way to get that working would be to replace the entire unit as it's all built-in, cost ₹7k-odd. Moreover, the projector's beam has a blank/black/no light spot towards the left end of it's throw since years now.
A few months ago the bulb in the projector lamp also went kaput. Maybe it was an extraordinarily heavy day at the RE service station in Fatima Nagar, Pune or just my luck but despite the two hours it took them replace the bulb, the evening ride revealed the projector's blank/black/no light spot was/is still there.

Personally, I love the double barrel set up of the Thunderbird 350, but am keen to upgrade the lighting. My homework has brought me to the point where I consider the following:
1. Upgrade the existing OEM H4s to a better bulb. Am unsure of how much of a gain I'll get from that.
2. I wonder if it's possible to get a wiring harness kit and install Philips 90/100 halogens on the TBTS350. That's what I used when when rats made a meal of the headlight (and other) wiring of my Toyota Etios Liva VD during the Covid lockdown of 2020, and it's results are good.
3. Install Philips LEDs, hopefully plug and play, into the barrel slots. I don't know if the headlamp assembly has room enough to accommodate the LED's fan within it's housing. If successful, am sure this would work splendidly.

4. Upgrade: Maddog seems to be a common favourite and my FNG did show me a 7" plug and play that replaces the stock double barrel, along with other Chinese options. Still not completely convinced.
5. Vaishnu's LED offering for the 2012-2019 Thunderbird in terms of touring headlights. This seems to be the most competent option if I do need to spend around the ballpark of ₹7k. Does anyone have experience with these?

Headlights for RE Meteor 350

Hey buddies,

I recently purchased a new Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Stellar. While I am happy with everything else, I am totally dissatisfied with its headlight. It is bad in all areas of a proper headlight function like illumination, throw, spread, low/high beam, and also the dipper/pass function is almost useless.

I want to upgrade the headlight with a better and legal option preferably halogen bulbs. I don't want to completely change the headlight unit because in my opinion that will ruin the bike's retro look. Also, I don't want to go for aftermarket Chinese LED lights, which may be brighter but are both illegal and non-durable. I also don't want to install additional LED lights on the engine guard, for the same and above reasons.

Therefore, I have shortlisted four headlight bulb options that are branded, legal, and dependable. If any existing users of RE Meteor 350 have used any of these headlight bulbs, then please give some unbiased feedback on these. Also, it will be great if you can post some pictures.

1. Philips Racing Vision GT200 (60/55 W 12 V) H4
2. Philips X-treme Vision Pro 150 (60/55 W 12 V) H4
3. Philips Extreme Vision (60/55 W 12 V) H4
4. Osram Night Breaker Laser 150 (60/55 W 12 V) H4

Besides the above, if you have other better suggestions please do let me know.

Thanks in anticipation.
Aditya

Here is my take, buy round OE Hella seal beam for Premier Padmini (7 inch) and empty dome of classic Thunderbird. Plonk the seal beam in the dome. Get the 90/100 relay kit for cars and a good knowledgeable electrician should be able to help it install. With the relay kit in place you will be able to run H4 60/55w halogens or LED bulbs. I have had this setup with halogens on my Premier Padmini quite some years back so it works. Oh and you get the parking lamp in the seal beam in which again you can install a LED.

Have used the Extreme vision and Night breaker and they both are good bulbs. However I found the Extreme vision a tad better because it has a combo of halogen yellow + a tinge of white like LEDs. If you want to go for LEDs, you can try the bulbs from Philips, Osram or Autobahn Bangalore (have had their setup on my ZMA and a friend`s CBR250).

If you have the budget nothing will beat the brightness, low beam cut-off and spread, high beam spot along with dual temperature as the Vaishnu replacement headlight. It will not only be brighter than any halogen replacement but also consume less then half the power.

I am looking for a 12V halogen 90/100 W in H4

What is the difference between Osram's Silverstar and Rallye?

Re: Upgrading the Headlight Bulb on a motorcycle

Short update to my post: Successfully upgraded to H7 LEDs albeit a Chinese manufactured bulb that runs with the brand name Night Eye, as that was what my FNG runs with for all LED upgrades for customers.
He made a small incision for the fan's air to blow out of the headlamp unit at the rear in the stock assembly fitment. Cost me ₹1680 for two bulbs and ₹200 for service charges. It's a good upgrade from the stock OEM halogens, specially the high beam that does a much better job of illuminating the 100ft of road ahead at night. Being a 2017 machine the bike comes with the always-on headlamp setup which I left as is.
If ever I need to change the bulbs, will try out the Osram's or the Philips H7s.
Cheers!

Silverstar shines whiter and suited best for city, Rallye gives yellowish light just like OffRoad cars and suited best for highways and dimly lit rural roads. IMHO better to go for Led setup and save battery as well as headlight reflector. Autobahn R6 and P9 are my personally tested led bulbs and gives better value for money than some high end brands.

Quoting an old post but a 90/100W bulb will drain the motorcycle battery and more importantly, stock wires & switch wouldn't be able to take the additional load which is like 3X the original load.

What I have found to be a worthy upgrade to stock halogens without any change in the set up is upgrading to Osram Rallye 40/45W halogen bulb. The output is 30%-40% more than the regular 35W bulbs and the beam pattern and distance is much better. MRP of the bulb is Rs. 205/- which is slightly steeper if compared to regular 30W bulbs which come for Rs. 60-Rs. 80

In my experience, this is the best bulb I have used. Also, the stock Philips 35W bulb's beam pattern & intensity was good. Later changed to Halonix and Bosch (regular) and these were average in terms of both.
