Hi all,
Back again here with some more stupid confusion, I have still not decided on the way I want to do the electrical of my bullet.
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motorb...d-electra.html

There is a reason.

I have an AVL crank case with me. It has the crank, Barrel kit and the timing side. I want to use it on my bike. What’s the best way to use it?

My plans and options.

1. Use the crank case, Replace the crank weights and the rod, and use the CI barrel and head with the same Clutch, Gearbox from STD.

2. Use the Timing case and fit it on the STD where the rest all would remain the same, the crank would need to be modified.

3. Use the Crank case and all that and get a brand new AVL barrel and piston (I really want to avoid this one)

In all of these cases I would need to modify the Crank that means that I would be changing the electrical that would be converted to the CDI (as in the old Electra’s).

Another question

As the Timing Gears are different in the AVL and the STD. how much reliable would it be in case we use the first option.
Also some one was telling me that the CI piston rings are not able to hold on for long under the flow of the AVL oil pump and there smokeing problem.

Please give inputs so that I can get started soon... thanks a lot all you all. I hope to have a good touring Enfield and then meet you on the road some time.

Thanks

hi desideep, you could have waited some more time & score 100 :). I was kinda waiting that as i see options listed quite tricky. Well it takes time for most of us even to visualize those combinations. Hope your current CI engine dosen't become a parts donor.

Since you intent for a tourer reliability + comfort primes, so building it to a regular Avl would be better choice. Option1 -if time & wallet permits. i once was told of t'bird running Avl crank itself with CI conrod, cyl & head but have no more info. Option2 -popular mod. Option3 -safest. CDI is good but Coil assy of TCI from ES m/cs has more capacity for lamps etc. Sorry that i'm clueless on timing gear- piston ring part.

Desideep,
i just completed your other thread, I am going OT but if i am not wrong you are doing all this because of CB Point. I know you are using your bike from few years and even i using from last 10 years only, thi CB point has his own set of problems but as suggested by you in your other thread you can use the point by Autoescorts. One more suggestion go for 4 cable alternator, in this setup your headlight woul run by magnet and not by battery.

thanks a lot for your reply on the other thread Shubhendra, na na i am not doing it cause of the CB points CB points are not that problematic. its just that i have blown so many pistons in last two and half years that i am out of count now. it has been 10 in day before yesterday. i want a reliable Bullet (i am not using the work bike for obvious reasons.). i already have the 12 volt system on my bike and it runs real well.

How did you manage to blow 8 pistons in two years? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the piston lubricated by oil splashing in the crankcase? Though, I'm sure that the AVL oil pump will be beneficial to the bike regardless.

if i knew that i would have got it repaired and runnig hehehe

10 'Offerings to the Bhagwan of thump' :), can we have some photos?
I guess you suspect some issue with crankcase & so want to use the Avl half. In that case its Good, top that Avl case with CI barrel. iirc, CI rod necessitates a height adjustment at cyl base. Rest i'll try check m/c shop guy who did base works.

if you are really blowing all those pistons, i think the problem is not with the bike but maybe the way you are driving/maintaining it. please dont take this the wrong way but this is most unprecedented.
sometimes the 'oil pump' will stick or some blockage is involved somewhere.
on long trips i add a bit of oil into the petrol tank and this keeps the piston lubed.
good luck, but with all the proposed changes i think youre asking for more headaches down the road.
just my opinion
mitch

thanks a lot not offended at all. sorry that i did not mention. but i have 3 bullets. one is a ELECTRA 2002 model. i run it like hell. full throttle riding always. another one is a 1965 350 still to be worked upon. my Electra recently got a make over. let me post a rough picture.

this bike runs perfect in all conditions. though i don't use it that much. cause i want to get the STD set rite first.

Even I'm pondering over a similar mystery here...

Why would a piston seize 8000 km after an overhaul on a 45 km trip at 70-80 km/h when it has already withstood multiple instances of 35 km non-stop uphill climb in all gears except 4th at 20-60 km/h and short sprints of 4-5 km at 90 km/h?

Not too off-topic, I hope.

Hi Deep,

That's a great idea you have there, & I guess it will be first of its kind here in Delhi or Punjab. You only once told me about Anthony, why don't you also speak to him & get to know his opinion on this. In case you do, also post his opinion here for all of us to see.

About your options, I feel that the 1st one is what you should go ahead with & the reason apart from other things is that I would like to see that '77 crankcase the way it is, don't touch it & keep it the way it is. You might not ever get another one of those, so I feel you should hold on to it in original state for a little long.

About the piston ring problem, the old pistons, with the 2 or 3 rings was never that great. No offence, as they have done duty for miles & miles in most of our Bullets, but then the newer pistons with 5 rings are way better. If the rings are a concern, then get a new original piston from Electra (not Std, as I think the Std might still have the old design). You should be good to go with it.

Also, a friend in Punjab from RE forums had done some changes to the oil flow setup, I think he installed the high output oil pumps from Samrat which although are not near to the AVL pump, they still pump a better volume. From inputs I had gotten from him, you should be more concerned about the oil seals, but then hey, you would be changing the crankcase itself along with the timing chest.

Take care & keep the thread posted.

Happy thumping,
Prakhar

When did the CI350 start coming with 5-ring pistons? I didn't know of any such development.

Aren't Samrat products supposed to be a bit problematic? I've heard of Samrat rockers wearing out prematurely. Perhaps their other products are better.

A bit off-topic but would like to know. Which Bullet mechanic in Chandigarh do you go to?

Hey there,

Yes the new pistons come with 5 rings, 2 are helper rings that have been added now, but I cannot be sure as to when they started coming. I learnt about this during one of my visits to a mechanic & saw him rebuilding an engine.

About Samrat products, their rockers had a problem as they were all aluminium. Later they supposedly improved upon them but have no solid information. Their high output oil pumps though have always been good. I personally know of at least two people who have been using them. The only problem is that they are hard to come by.

About the mechanic, I used to go to a mechanic, but my bike's now in Delhi. But if I may ask, what was the inclination to ask about my mechanic?

Happy thumping,

A progress-

-------------------

Went to my mechanic today. Tomorrrow is his off. the AVL engine would be opened up and checked on thursday. all the parts needed would be bought by Friday or saturday. and hence begins a new journey
