There are always different perspectives in life to products and thought process. Mostly or almost always there is no right or wrong, just different perspectives of looking at it. What you mention is exactly that.
Mahindra has done an extremely smart move with the Roxx by opening up a new revenue stream of sorts. I don’t like the name but like the product from this thread and other reviews.
Myself and so, so many people like me don’t really care what the past has been for the Thar, we are interested in what is presented this time. For example people like me are not interested and don’t care for off roading or the 3 door Thar but have always liked the look of the Thar and road presence.
This 5 door opens up that world for people like us. I have to check it out and test drive the automatic Petrol 2WD whether it suits and fits into my life because looks are not everything at the end of the day :)
Cheers

2) Impact on Brand Image and Consumer Perception Mahindra’s strategy with the Thar Roxx does bring up some interesting questions about how the brand will be perceived moving forward?
|
To understand this, lets take a look at Ford. Ford re-introduced Bronco nameplate but didn't wait at that. Under Bronco brand, they have 2-door convertible and 5-door convertible pitched directly against Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Rubicon respectively. They went 1 step further and also added Bronco Sport which does not share any mechanical bits with Bronco but is targeted at crossover segment. This way Bronco brand portfolio caters to multiple segments and each car benefits from Bronco legacy.
Mahindra is trying to do something similar. Thar 3-door may remain their hardcore off-road SUV (need to watch out for facelift to understand their strategy) while other cars under Thar brand may leverage from its legacy. Thar-E is also on cards and we never know if Scorpio-N pickup (when launched) hits right notes with people, we might see Thar based pickup a la Jeep Gladiator. This is all what I assume Mahindra could be doing based on what is seen and heard from brand so far. Exciting days for SUV enthusiasts for sure.

I guess this was pretty much expected - used car market will be flooded with 3D - i guess this is the right time to press hard and buy a used Thar. I am actually in the market for the same. |
I am also looking for the same. Lets team along for Delhi NCR Region!

There's certainly value in making the Thar Roxx more accessible to a broader audience, especially for those who love the Thar’s look and road presence but aren’t interested in off-roading. In the end, it comes down to what each of us is looking for in a vehicle. I hope the Thar Roxx turns out to be just what you’re looking for after your test drive!

I get what you’re saying about Ford expanding the Bronco lineup to cater to different markets. They’ve done a great job of using the Bronco name to build a broader brand portfolio, targeting everything from hardcore off-roaders to more mainstream crossovers like the Bronco Sport. Each model benefits from the Bronco’s rugged reputation, even if they serve different purposes. I guess Mahindra might be trying something similar with the Thar, but I see a key difference in their approach. The Bronco Sport is clearly marketed as a separate model for a different type of driver—it doesn’t pretend to be the same kind of off-road beast as the regular Bronco. With the Thar, though, RWD variant under the same name might blur the lines a bit.
But I agree with you—it’s definitely an exciting time for SUV fans.

I do have a question that I missed earlier: why didn't Mahindra announce the prices for all the 4x4 variants right at launch? It makes me wonder if there’s some hesitation on their part about how to position these models in the market. My initial thought was that they might not be entirely confident about what the optimal price point should be for the 4x4 versions.
By revealing the prices for the RWD variants first, it seems like they’re trying to gauge the market’s reaction and see how much interest there is. Maybe they’re waiting to see the buzz around the RWD versions before deciding on the pricing for the 4x4 models. It almost feels like they’re testing the waters to see if there’s enough demand for the 4x4 before committing to a final price.
This approach could suggest that Mahindra is either unsure about the market appetite for the 4x4 models or is strategically holding back to create anticipation.

They are trying to create as much buzz as possible in >12.5 lacs price range. They want people to hold/rethink their purchases by building this excitement. 4x4 prices will make them look pricey and they know 4x4 enthusiasts are a niche segment and sales numbers will be driven by 4x2 whose prices they have already revealed.
Any insights on how does Roxx compare to Duster? I have been driving a Duster for a decade now and need to replace it. Should I consider a Roxx as a replacement? I have been eyeing a 4 wheel drive because I take my car often to Himalayas, with my family of 3 in it. Even as Duster served the purpose, I found myself in tricky situations a few times and missed the assurance that a 4X4 brings. With this in mind, I have been waiting for the new gen Duster 4X4. But the wait seems endless with no concrete news of a Duster arrival in sight. It is definitely not coming by the end of this year, when my Duster will be illegalised in the NCR.
So my question to all of you is, how would a Roxx compare to a Duster? Especially when we are thinking in terms of 80 percent city and 20 percent highway/mountain use, and in terms of ride quality.

Beautiful looking car, especially in white colour. How does the ride quality compare to that with Jeep compass.
I had test driven the 3 door thar and found it too bouncy even on smooth tar road. Would the ride quality be similar to the Scorpio N?
For me the car ticks all the boxes except for the unknown... Ride quality, suspension and stability on roads. If it matches with the ride quality of the compass then i would be tempted to buy this one.
Even if it is at par with ride quality and suspension of the Scorpio N i would go for it. |
What should be the price for AX7L AT 4WD?
At the time of Scorpio N's launch, AT 4WD variants were dearer by approx 2.5L if I am not mistaken and now, the difference is 1.5L compared to 2WD.
Anything above 22L ex- showroom would be too expensive IMHO.
Mahindra, please don't breach the 21.99L mark.

Slow speed ride there would be a compromise compared to duster but speeds above 40 kmph you should have a better ride. Handling again Duster is one of the great neutral handlers with 4x4 underpinnings, so that will win at very high speeds. Otherwise a 4x4 Roxx is actually meant for folks like you, my cousin is exactly in the same boat as you looking for a reasonable fuel efficient replacement for his Duster 4x4. Fuel efficiency Roxx will fail miserably in comparison with Duster.

Juicy pricing would be 1.5 to 2 Lakh delta over 4x2, but expect 2.5 to 3, I feel anything over 2 to 2.5 Lakh is expensive. The value that I saw in Roxx and reason I am impressed is partly due to the pricing too. What it brings to the table at this price point is true VFM.
Carwale - Thar Roxx ARAI certified mileage revealed Quote:
As for the mileage figures, the petrol motor is certified to return a fuel efficiency of 12.40kmpl. On the other hand, the diesel engine is said to deliver a claimed mileage of 15.20kmpl. Do note that the mentioned figures are ARAI-certified. Additionally, we have done the real-world mileage test of the diesel automatic version in the 4x2 guise.
In Carwale tests, the Thar Roxx delivered a mileage of 10.82kmpl and 15.44kmpl in the city and on the highway, respectively. The combined figures came out to be 11.97kmpl, which is decent when compared to what is being claimed.

Also another good watch on Thar Roxx offroad bits is by our very own bhpian
@gsferrari. He asked the Mahindra team about the radiator issue on Thar 3-door and what has been done to Thar Roxx to solve it. Watch from 34:00 onwards for offroad, underbody protection and low radiator issues on Thar 3-door.

Don't get carried away 15.2 Kmpl in real world, it is very very optimistic and if you drive sedately at 80-90 Kmph. Real life expect 8-10 kmpl in city and 10-13 kmpl on highways for the diesel variant with the way our Indian drive conditions are.

So we maybe looking at 6-7 kmpl for the Petrol AT RWD in the City :coldsweat
Its been a few days since the Thar Roxx got launched, and while it has garnered a lot of reviews, comments and opinions, there is no news on the 4X4 version. Very meticulously, Mahindra has ensured that the target of Thar Roxx is the 4X2 customer only.
When the Thar 3 Door version was launched, it was all about the offroading prowess of the vehicle, the ads showed the vehicle going on inclines, water wading and living the "Live Young Live Free" tagline. But with Thar Roxx, that is not the case at all.
Now that might be great for Mahindra's positioning, it is a bit of a dampner for an offroad enthusiast like me looking at the Thar Roxx only in the 4X2 version.
When is the price of the 4X4 going to be released? Any idea?
I am sure there are a few Thar 3 Door 4x4 owners, who could be looking at the Roxx to fulfill the shortcomings of the Thar 3 Door 4X4 with an upgrade, may be not immediately, but in due time. The conundrum is the price!
If you upgrade now to Roxx 4X4, you might get an introductory price of ~28 Lakhs OTR Bangalore, which will be ~8 to 10 lakhs more than Thar 3 Door 4X4 OTR cost, what he/she would have paid just a few years back :Shockked:
If you wait it out, you lose on resale price of the Thar 3 Door, as well as pay an updated price (knowing M&M), which would be even higher :Frustrati
Ahh! Why can't life be simple !

No 4x4/mStallion combination for the Roxx is a pity, IMO :unhappy Did Mahindra folks at the launch event provide any insights into the reason behind this? Or anything on the possibility of getting one out in the future?
Does Roxx also use Vi for network connectivity? There's a lot of complaints against Vi in the XUV700 forum so wondering if that still continues here.

You're almost the perfect candidate for the Roxx. It may not ride or handle as great as a Duster but Roxx may well become the benchmark on ride and handling, among the ladder frame vehicles. Comparing both the vehicles on those two attributes is futile.
But what you can do is take multiple test drives with your family and judge for yourself to see if it's liveable. Do the TD on your oft travelled routes. It's the best way to differentiate the ride quality. My guess is you would fall for it. Just ensure the tyre pressure of the TD car is at 32-33 psi. Most TD cars will always have them set at a higher value, possibly to avoid topping them up every now and then. It would work as a great upgrade for you. If I were in your shoes, it would be a diesel AT for me, that comes with a 4*4 too. Good luck.
cheers,
bibendum.

Dr.Velu, the Mahindra top boss has indicated that there's no technical limitation in having a petrol 4*4. But their current priority is to set the production lines in accordance to the market demand, which is largely RWD. They're tight lipped about a petrol 4*4, as of now.
On a side note, the FE of a 4*4 petrol Roxx would be even more absymal and in lower single digits, going by the FE of Thar petrol. I'm not sure if that factor is also playing in the minds of marketing folks at Mahindra.
