No 4x4/mStallion combination for the Roxx is a pity, IMO :unhappy Did Mahindra folks at the launch event provide any insights into the reason behind this? Or anything on the possibility of getting one out in the future? |
The design of Thar is not aero dynamic and has a high drag coefficient.
Mahindra is marketing Roxx as a family car. All reviews show panoramic sunroof, plush white interiors, good second row space, etc. 4x4 Petrol automatic will give very less mileage and eventually will not fit in the checklist of a family car. Fuel efficiency is definitely one of the factors for people considering a family car based on my personal opinion. I have started to see flood of Thar 3-doors in Hyderabad and most of them are - RWD diesel manual, Diesel 4x4 automatic and very rare Petrol 4x4 automatic.
The light interiors and butch looks might attract some cross shoppers who would consider Roxx and buy it. Later in the life cycle they would realize that Roxx might not work completely as a family car due to lack of cubbies, bottle holders, less fuel efficiency and then sell it about 6months to 1 year down the line.

Honestly I don't think people who have Thar or Roxx on their shopping list will care about bottle holders and FE. They are well aware of what they are getting.

I have already replied to this. and following sums it up well.

Dr.Velu, the Mahindra top boss has indicated that there's no technical limitation in having a petrol 4*4. But their current priority is to set the production lines in accordance to the market demand, which is largely RWD. They're tight lipped about a petrol 4*4, as of now.
On a side note, the FE of a 4*4 petrol Roxx would be even more absymal and in lower single digits, going by the FE of Thar petrol. I'm not sure if that factor is also playing in the minds of marketing folks at Mahindra. |

Does Roxx also use Vi for network connectivity? There's a lot of complaints against Vi in the XUV700 forum so wondering if that still continues here. |
Yes, can see the Vi symbol on the display unit top left if you look close.

There are after market solutions like dash and seat back bags that can easily solve storage issues. So that again maybe not be a deal breaker at purchase. I agree at purchase most people look for comfort, drivability, fuel efficiency more than such finer convenience details.

What should be the price for AX7L AT 4WD?
At the time of Scorpio N's launch, AT 4WD variants were dearer by approx 2.5L if I am not mistaken and now, the difference is 1.5L compared to 2WD.
Mahindra, please don't breach the 21.99L mark. |
My guess is that Mahindra will reveal the prices of 4WD variants very close to the start of bookings, perhaps on October 2nd. They could host another event then to announce the launch of bookings and also reveal prices of 4X4 variants.
Remember, the Thar Roxx 4X4 has much more to offer over the equivalent 2WD Roxx, as compared to what a 4XPLOR 4WD ScorpioN offers over an equivalent ScorpioN 2WD.
In the case of the ScorpioN, the 4XPLOR offers the 4X4 mechanism with:
- Brake Locking Differential
- Shift-on-the-Fly mechanism and selectable terrain modes.
In the case of the Thar RoXX the 4WD system is more advanced and offers:
- Electronic Locking Differential
- Brake locking differential
- Selectable Terrain Modes
- Crawl Smart feature to get out of deep sand
- Intelli-turn feature fro sharper turns at low speeds
In the case of the Scorpio N, the price premium for Z8L Diesel Auto 4WD over Diesel Auto 2WD is 1.9 lakhs and it is 2.15 lakhs in the case of the Z8 Diesel Auto 4WD over the equivalent 2WD. Considering the additional features offered in the Thar's 4WD system, I think the price premium is more likely to be around 2.5 lakhs. I would therefore expect the Thar AX7L Diesel 4WD to top out at 22.99 lakhs.
Friends,
Can anyone tell whether the Intelii-turn feature be used while engaging the reverse gear?
What is the difference between 'brake locking differential ' vs an off road ESP mode clamping a wheel when it detects slip? I keep seeing this as an offroad feature everywhere but is it just marketing or something different?

In my understanding, ESC is more focused on on-road conditions, and aimed at correcting vehicle skidding. When skidding happens, the wheels start to slide in one direction. ESC applies differentially to the wheels to help the driver to regain control. ECS also reduced engine power immediately on sensing the skid.
BLD s more relevant in off-road conditions, when the wheels spin without traction. The mechanism of action is similar, in that the braking is differentially managed, however, engine power is not reduced in this case.
I wish instead of a 4by 4 option Mahindra would provide an awd version. Would be used more. How many times do most people go off roading in which four wheel capability is mandatory? Thinking of it as a replacement for my Yeti. What do the experts think?

Any insights on how does Roxx compare to Duster? I have been driving a Duster for a decade now and need to replace it. Should I consider a Roxx as a replacement? I have been eyeing a 4 wheel drive because I take my car often to Himalayas, with my family of 3 in it. Even as Duster served the purpose, I found myself in tricky situations a few times and missed the assurance that a 4X4 brings. With this in mind, I have been waiting for the new gen Duster 4X4. But the wait seems endless with no concrete news of a Duster arrival in sight. It is definitely not coming by the end of this year, when my Duster will be illegalised in the NCR.
So my question to all of you is, how would a Roxx compare to a Duster? Especially when we are thinking in terms of 80 percent city and 20 percent highway/mountain use, and in terms of ride quality. |
I used to own a Duster and now own a 3 D Thar. The Duster was more comfortable, but the Thar much more powerful( 105 bhp vs 130-150 bhp). My guess is that the Roxx would be much more powerful and also comfortable with better electronics and mechanicals for off-roading even in RWD guise.

For the time being NO, it works only in forward.

It provides locker like feature needed for offroad situation by locking the differential for traction. ESP provides stability control from safety perspective. Though it may sound same, are not and can be conflicting with action in reality.

A permanent AWD would be less efficient overall (capability and efficiency wise) since they are permanently connected which adds complexity in hard tarmac usage Vs a shiftable system that can be controlled for both on tarmac, as well as off the tarmac situation. Yes a little more user involvement is there Vs a fully automated system.
Ok. I just hope I like the drivers seating position. I do not like the 3 door’s ergonomics.
Birdie chirps that the initial demand for the Thar Roxx has exceeded Mahindra's expectations and waiting periods for select variants are expected to shoot past (at least) 06 months from Day 1 of launch itself.

If this is true: Post pandemic, Mahindra seems to be taking not one wrong step (the rear side-triangle on the Roxx notwithstanding). How the fortunes have turned!
Because I firmly believe that a car’s exterior design is the major buying decision factor (given Creta’s sales and obnoxious pricing - I will even say that pricing has become redundant to an extent) - Mahindra should write a book: ‘Auto Design for Dummies’. Marazzo, Hexa anyone?
