Re: Restoration: Triumph / Standard Herald

Pardon my ignorance,sir.

Is it just me or is the tyre on the rear slanting.

Or is it something present in the TATRA trucks where once the weight is placed on the truck, the tyres become straight.

Nothing to worry about, that is the normal stance of the Herald's rear wheels, because of the way the rear leaf spring is mounted (as you can see in the pics.) ie. transverse unlike in other cars where the axle has twin leaf springs mounted parallel on either side of the axle. And yes the tyres do become straight once the car exerts weight on the road while running.

Re: Restoration: Triumph / Standard Herald

A similar type of setting can be seen in the old Tempo's (3 wheeler).

Travelogue + photos = Photologue
Restoration + photos = Photoration
This thread is like watching mute movie in 3d theatre.

Pun indeed intended.

Bear with me, just a bit of info I wanted to add. Like the Herald's, Mercedes Pontons and Fintails of the 1950s & 60s also had this sort of appearance on the rear wheels when the car was unladen. The first time my Merc was put up onto a service lift, the rear wheels sagged so much, I thought that they were going to fall off! They when the car was planted firmly on the ground, things straightened out.

However, the Merc stance, though similar to the Herald's, was due to an independant rear axle setup, known as the de Dion axle (named after the company that pioneered it in the late 1800s or early 1900s). The two sides of the axle being almost independent to each other really smoothes out bumps and irregularities on road surfaces.

The Herald also had independent rear suspension. (typing through a phone I pressed the Thanks button instead of the Quote button)

The Herald/Vitesse/Standard Mark1,2 never had independent suspension. It always had an inverted leaf spring and thus the wheels used to hang downwards.

Some of the local conversion in India had leaf suspension which changed the wheel position.

The Herald was positioned and advertised as a car ahead of its time and one of the reasons quoted by the manufacturer was it's four wheel independent suspension. Not as advanced as the current day independent suspensions, it was it's predecessor. An Independent suspension is when the movement on one suspension does not effect the other. The Herald's inverted and transversely mounted rear leaf spring was bolted onto the rear differential thereby the movement on one side was not transmitted to the other side.

The Herald's static laden condition (as specified by manufacturer) of 72 kgs on each wheel corner would make the camber angle of the rear wheels equal to that of the front.

Re: Restoration: Triumph / Standard Herald

Got the top and the roof liner installed, and also stripped off the mechanicals for paint and to replace all the bushes and worn out bearings and then started off with the wiring. My main concern was sourcing the rubber beadings for the car. Did some trial and error testing with maruti omni beadings, guess what fits right. i had used a rubber for the rear windsheild which happen to be too thick and odd looking so got the one replaced at the later stage.
