Saw this Amby mark II in running condition and appears to be an original, though is not the one which yearn for a second glance.

No, Jose, I saw this on Rajaji Road, near KSRTC Bus station, opposite Amity Kochi. I have a vague sort of memory on this car because of the fancy number, that this car was earlier with some one in Vytilla, opp Silver Sand island. Not quite clear.

Rajeev, thanks for the info. If this car is KLF, I used to see this car inside the Kalikotta Palace at Tripunithura. Not sure where it actually belongs, but this is just my assumption. I too noted this car because of the unique number.

Okay, so we are talking about the same car. IIRC correctly, this car has only the front grill and bumper guards as original MKII. The rest of the parts are changed to new models :Frustrati.

Is this car lying abandoned?

When I saw it today, it did not look abandoned and was within an office cum residence style building, and has gathered dust of only over a couple of days. The road is in such a mess beyond the revolving restaurant so the dust is normal. Thanks

Two 1979 Ambassadors now going, going gone. The top one is fitted with the front bumper below the front grille as an accessory.This one was parrot green in colour originally.


The car featured in the lower picture is original (not the paint of course) with the two piece front bumper (all original Mark 4's had such bumpers to which the central portion was added around 1981 or so. Here it leaves out the grille portion to defend itself from impacts.And the inevitable has happened! There was a small impact which has caused a dent there! This car was brownish orange(very rare to find now) in colour originally.

Anjan you have the pictures of the typical bumper in the initial Mark 4 attributable to cost cutting by HM, which I have mentioned in several posts.I was unable to locate even one as the central piece were added later on as an after market fitment by almost all owners.

More Ambassador pictures here!Thes eare the Standard model. A deluxe version was available then.The dashboard had a different configuration for the Deluxe models with two more meters for oil pressure and temperature.The Deluxe also had OE reverse lights below the taillight console. Some of these Ambys have aftermarket fitted reverse lights.Another notable feature in these Ambys is the 1 cm rubber thick guard all around on the central part of the bumpers.The rubber guard had a metal strip within that was bolted to the bumper. The bumper had holes for the nut and bolt arrangement.The rubber would peel off (seen here too) and the rusted metal would get exposed.After the metal and rubber were both gone the bumper with holes would look awful!:Shockked: This rubber guard was discontinued by HM by 1982 or 83 after lessons learnt!

Thanks for the nostalgia, Anjan. We had two of them in succession, when I was in school - though both were the "full bumper" type as we called it.

MTY 2205 was rust brown, and MMG 4189 was black.
MMG 4189 had black tinted glasses, and AC (back then an AC was quite a novelty) supplemented by a huuuge after-market radiator.
My friends used to call it the "smuggler car" :D

The "half bumper" was quite commented upon when it first came out !!

How come all of them (except I think the beige/brown one) have gaudy velvet seats and padding on the dash? Unlikely for Govt. vehicles to be garnished like this. Or maybe they arent? Are these vehicles in Nagpur?

Also, as I'd mentioned on the RIP thread, can I get the good hubcaps off these cars?? The ones on the Beige car especially look clean.

An advert of the early Mark 4. Please check the wiper position (Mark 3 type) and the one posted in the picture (Mark 4 type). Did the early ones came with Mark 3 taillights? Also the 3rd dash picture has an incorrect speedo.

Mark 4 is pure nostalgic. It is this car that I first sat on as a small kid, helped my brother charging the battery, helped my uncle cleaning the car and our dog do soo - soo on rear tyre secretly. It was this car that I fondly remember as a small boy honking the horn via the ring. Centre of the steering there was an H imbossed circular boss. Which to me was for home. In between the boss there was a knob for the "dog bhagaying lights" (removing dogs out of way) one on front left bottom for dogs on left side and one on front right bottom for right side dogs. There was a switch on floor, pressing that activated the "cow bhagaying light".

That was me at a very small age of 6 -7 years :D.
