Also,i had seen a petrol original mark 3 and another diesel as well!.please:which one is preferable?. As per me i wish to go for the petrol one.

I would also say that you go for the petrol one. the diesel may be an aftermarket fitting. Diesel Ambassadors came only after the introduction of the Mark 4.The Mark 4 came in Feb 1979 and the diesel came along sometime in 1981 or so to the best of my knowledge (the BMC 1489 cc diesel).
The Mark 3's came with the chrome strip on the windscreen beading. The only rubber beadings came with the Mark 4. The Mark 4 had a Standard and a deluxe version. The Deluxe version had the chrome beading in the initial years. The Standard initially came with the black rubber beading and later on both the Standard and deluxe had the same black rubber ones.
Here are some pictures of the Mark 3's:

This one is an advertisement. Body shells of Mark3's and later 4's by HM were sold to buyers who wanted to change the original.

The Mark3 had steel beading. The rubber alone ones were later arrivals after the advent of the Marutis when lot of ancillary industries were set up. ALP was the brand then which were quite good.

Diesel variants of Amby were launched for the first time in Mark 4s and no mark3 diesels were made by HM.

I read somewhere that in the late 70s a limited batch of Mark III Ambassadors were produced with 1,700 cc engines. I am yet to see one. Can anyone throw some light.

If the mark3 has AC, and if it is OE then the car could be a limited edition with 1700cc petrol engine in which case go and grab it.

The Ambassador is certainly a tank, when it comes to its build

The first instance I witnessed was when I was a kid, and I had seen an accident happen betweeh an amby and a bus. Most of the front of the bus, driver side was in a fairly bad shape and smashed in. The Amby had a bent steel bumper and cracked headlight!!!!

Second incident, about 2 years ago in gurgaon. Was coming back from the airport to gurgaon. We wanted an omni as we had some big luggage. For some reason we didnt get one, despite a few being in the line and we were forced into an Amby

Just near Gymkhana club inn gurgaon (We were staying in south city 1 at that time), we were going straight, when a guy in an innova from the opposite side, stops and just when we were a few yards in front of him decided to cross the road. We had no option but to slam the brakes and smash into him. Side ways as the car skided. The side of the innova had fully bent in, the amby also took a beating, but considering the cab guy was driving in the range of around 70kmph, it was quite amazing

Luckily no one was injured, my kid was fine, so the wife. And obviously the Innova guy sped away. We tried giving chase but the ambys seemed to have damaged its axle

So, all in all, this is on of the best and rock solidly built cars ever and is so massive that it always amazes me at its size

You are right, because the only amby I know which had a bigger engine than the std. ones is the Rally amby with a 1760 (or more)cc Mark 4. WMF3355.

the one in my prof. picture.clap:

Posting pic of my 1955 Land Master. We use this car for short local travel. The car is not a stock one. It has a Isuzu engine, bucket seats, steering wheel is also not original. Dash is original with Smith's meters, but few push pull switches are from Amby. I'm unable to find the original tail lamps and we adjusted other lamps temporarily. Externally I badly miss the rear tail lamps and wide white wall tyres.

Anjan, Thanks for the compliment. I wish I could restore it to full originality, but engine change is no more legal. So I'm planning to change all other stuff except the engine to original.

No Rajeev, it has an after market AC and the owner is asking 75K.Negotiations are going on.

By the by, please find some snaps of my newly acquired Mark 2.Please inform me whether the tail lights has to be changed like mark 1.The owner gave me a set of spare mark 1/OHV tail lights and original meters. It has a BMC Diesel engine mated with Isuzu gearbox and an AC.The only thing pending will be the Metal glass beading.

Sanjeev,
Congratulations on your new acquisition. That is a beautiful car and the white wall tyres add up to the classic looks. You will definitely have to switch to the original tail lights. The ones on the car came from Mark 3. As far as I know, the "mark II" writing will only be on the left and right fenders. It moved to the rear only from Mark 3. I think you should remove that from the rear.

Awesome looking car! I say it's all worth the money spent. Even if you get a original petrol engine it will take double the money and time to restore the car to this condition. Tail lamps of this cars are not the original ones, the tail lamp is in two peice, rounded ones. Congratulations for the immaculate car.

@ Sanjeev, the taillights got to go. the badge is ok...later models had the badge there.

are you sure about the engine and the tranny? it can be a 4 speed one. can you post pictures of the interior?

get a load of this..clap:

I require some info. from fellow Amby owners regarding the availability of Front park light lenses of Mark 1. How much should one pay for a set of plastic lenses.

Thanks everybody for your good words about the car.

Amit, the car has an Isuzu 5 speed gear box .I heard that HM has produced some cars with this combination and it's working fine as per my guys who drove it

I have the tail lights and i will definitely replace my existing one with the original.

One interior snap attached. I have the original dash meter console with meters and will fix them later!
