Genetic mutation, cross breeding, or the effects of Chernobyl ?

The dash board, the meters and the switches definitely belong to 1971 model. The aluminium strip and the mica strips of the instrument cluster were introduced in the first half of 1971 along with the upholstered squarish beading on the dash board. Up to 1971 model these beadings were different. Both - Autometer and Yenkay - make meters of identical design were OE from 1970 model year onwards.
Even the white wall tyres are period ones.

I have a question on speedo consoles offered in Ambys over the years. From my understanding the first models had two large Smiths gauges, with a clock in the centre. For the Mark IIs they probably moved to Autometer units, but identical in design. Maybe the clock was deleted at some point.



Then I have seen these two arrangements - the first sports Yenkay meters, the later Autometer. The warning light cluster also changes from circular to a horizontal stripe.





Then there is this version with wood veneer trim



Additionally this is a 1970 Amby Mk 2 with a completely different cluster - original or accessory?



And finally I assume this debuted on the Mark 3

Your understanding is correct. The Clock was dropped in 69 I think (68 Mk II definitely had it)

As far as I remember pictures 1, 2, 4 & 5 were standard offerings. 5 was the beginning of offering with the so called "deluxe" version.

Also the Pic 6 - such arrangement, was on offer with Mark 3 Deluxe - but the example pic given is not original - see the spacing between the dials, a bad job.

I don't recall seeing an arrangement as in Pic 3.

May be the experts can correct this.

Hi Karl,

By the time the ones with wood trim/ aluminium was introduced, they had done away with temperature and oil pressure gauges , so the mark 2 dash has after market fittings.

Pictures 1&2 are correct. In the 3rd, once the rectangle 4 light arrangement was introduced, temperature and oil pressure guages were dropped, in your picture, the oil pressure guage has been fitted after market. On the lower side. Notice and compare with the earlier three small round guage cluster!


Similarly, the mark 3 dash as shown also came with temperature and oil pressure gauges missing. Many fitted them as seen in your picture. A more expensive fitting was a different console with surrounds for the guages in the same material as the console, full black!

Oil pressure gauge was replaced by the fourth, yellow light.

If you see the early, seventies, mark 2 , you will notice only 3 round warning lights, oil pressure still being shown by means of a guage.

Your pictures bring back fond memories of that era, but, at which point in time, we could not wait to get rid of these carslol:

Spotted these Ambassadors at Jaipur City Palace 10 days back.

Picture 1 is the standard offering on the Ambassador (Mark I) and the initial Mark IIs. The Yenkay (Picture 2) and the two large meter Autometer resembling Smiths meters were simultaneously on offer till 68. In 1969 Autometer discontinued the large Smiths type meters and introduced Yenkay clones.
1970 saw the advent of the piano key type indicator lamps and Speedometer plus Ammeter & Fuel gauge arrangement. The meters were colour coded also. Both Yenkay and Autometer were OE suppliers then.(Picture 3)
The wooden finish mica cum Aluminium base was introduced along with the same meters in 1971.(Picture 4)
The console as in Picture 6 is an after market fitment. The Mark 3 and initial Mark 4 sported a similar arrangements but with instruments similar to those as in 1971 Mark IIs.

Does anyone have an idea about this hot rod Amby. Supposed to have 280bhp and made by KS Motorsports in Mumbai?

The Ambassador is fitted with a Nissan Silvia engine and the car has been duly modified by KS Motorsports, Mumbai.
