Thanks, but we were discussing the steel trim in the windscreen rubbers.

Dear Karl - I am conforming that I had gone to the National Garage workshop at Khira Nagar in Santacruz to take delivery of a brand new Ambassador petrol car in white color with floor shift transmission for converting to diesel with the XDP4.90 engine in Kandivli. This car was registered as MMH7432. It did not have the trims on the fenders as delivered brand new. This was in mid 1981.

Just for your records, the three project cars were MMB7342, MMH3679 (vertical engine) and MMH7432 (10 degrees inclined engine). :).

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

I wonder how the registration system worked, I had bought a new mark 4 MMH 4526 in june 82:D

MMH 7432 should logically be after mine???

They had rear fender aluminium patti and nothing on the front fenders.

I also remember that there was no chrome beading on the windshield rubber. The first mark 4 we had was one of the early series with the two corner bumber pieces in the front with the centre open, MMG 504, bought in 1980.

The chrome beading on the windshields came with the Mark 4's Deluxe till around 1981. When the Mark 3 was at the end of its model life (ended in Jan 1979), that is around 1977 end, HM introduced the Standard and Deluxe versions of the Mark 3. As we are well aware the dash meters were one plus four for the Deluxe and one plus two for the Standard. The Deluxe model had the chrome beading on its windshields, whereas the Standard model did not. The Deluxe model came with factory fitted, white wall tyres (even in the Mark 4). The Deluxe and Standard models continued with the introduction of the Mark 4, sometime in Feb 1979.As Bulldogji has rightly said, the front aluminium ribs were gone with the Mark 4 design from Feb 1979. The rear ones continued till May 24, 2014, but were shorter than those of the original Morris Oxford Series III and did not touch the tail lights .

Though the Deluxe and Standard models for the Mark 4 continued till the Nova came along, some trims were gone and this included the chrome beading that was gone around 1982, even from the Deluxe model.

Here is an advt from 1981, showing the Ambassador Deluxe with white walls and with the chrome beading. The two separate front bumper members with nothing at the centre came along with the early Mark 4's till 1981. This factory fitted central member seen here was added in 1981.

Thanks @karlosdeville. This means that I have to find those trims somewhere for my dad's car. I will check my sources in Bangalore and Hyderabad, but any pointers would be greatly appreciated. If they were optional in Mark 4, some HM parts dealers in Kolkata might still have them.

One other thing - I am thinking of using these from the Holden site as replacement switches for the 1962 car - http://www.holden.co.uk/displayprodu...es&pCode=31434. I can buy the lettered knobs (C, S, W, P) from the same site (Holden). They are supposed to be for Morris and look like the old Ambassador switches. I would appreciate yours and others opinion on these.

So, I can still have some faint hope that some old parts dealer will have them for my restoration. Kolkata dealers seem to be a common source among old parts dealers in other cities. I think my dad used mark 4 rubber trims (the ones that were there before restoration), so not sure if the aluminium trms can be fitted on them. May have to get the whole set.

Mark 2 and Mark 3 taxis from Mysore.

Pardon my saying but this is not restored to anything original. Inside dash switches are all mordern and the roof light switch . Hideous interiors and pattern. Those tyres look old and nothing to say they might be reliable in stationery position. Meters are new ones . Except the paint and its basic inside and outside trim its a Amby well painted from what we can see in these posted images.

Cheers

From what I can make out, speedo's a Yenkay meter in km/h. Weren't these fitted to the later mk2 Ambys? The earlier ones did have twin Smiths gauges.

The car is a later model of Mark II, so the meters are definitely correct. Maybe the switches too, cant say for sure. Interiors (atleast for the earlier cars) were offered in similar dual tone combinations, though not exactly the same. The tyres look like modern radials to me - can't say for sure. Yup, the roof light switch is a domestic light switch, a very common alteration - originals are very hard to find.

The car is a 1972 model. From whatever can be seen in the picture, the speedo and the ampere gauges are original. The fuel gauge is clearly a changed one. The switches on the dash are all original. HM changed over to the one (speedo) plus two ( fuel and amp ) configuration sometime in 1969 and over to the brown sunmica dash in the 1970 (1970 to mid 1975). These switches having aluminium labels showing the letters "C", "W", "L" and so on in black came with the one plus two meter configuration in 1969. The same switches continued till the advent of the Nova, when the dash was totally changed over.

So, the meter to the extreme left is changed, but everything else is original.

The seat and upholstery colour combination is from the mid 1960's (early Mark II's) and not from the late 1960's or early 1970's, but appears to have also been fitted with cushions and so on.The interiors are overdone.

Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery-dsc08885.jpg

These switches in black continued till 1969 and were the same for Ambys fitted with Smiths, Yenkay and Autometer gauges.

Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery-dsc09146.jpg

The changeover in 1969 to this configuration with the new switches and the one plus two configuration. The one plus three from 1965 changed over to this type in 1969 subtracting the OIL gauge. The dash is fully original here but fuel gauge is not.

FULLY ORIGINAL from 1973

Mark 3 from 1975 with the same switches and gauge configuration. The brown sunmica and chrome have made way for BLACK....:)

Other than one picture above from Olx, all others are clicked by me.
