Also VERY IMPORTANT: Did you check for the chassis no./ID plate on your car?? It should be present on the inner front mudguard, either left or right hand side, usually the left, right under the place where the battery sits, just before the front door hinges. You can see it with the bonnet open. Here is what an ORIGINAL one looks like:

Attachment 315050

Attachment 315053

The chassis plate is intact.

Today finally I got my car to the mechīs place and he started with the carburator cleaning and brake job. the original Solex Carburator(not the Fiat one - it is a bit smaller) seems OK but the brake master cylinder is in a really bad state and has to be replaced.
here are a few pics:
The guy in the first pic is my mech. the mighty ANSAR!!!

Hi Stanher,
Do you think the indicator switch assembly which I got is the right one? Can you tell me which switches are meant for what on the dashboard?

It is the correct one for your car- the later Indian Heralds had the shorter switch like this one.

Good to see the work progressing! Does your air-filter have the gasket intact btw?

Yes the air filter gasket is intact and in good shape.

Yesterday we managed to start the engine. Surprisingly, as per my mechīs opinion it is in excellent condition and doesnt need any work inside clap:. It has no noise what so ever and is very quite. One problem which he found though was the Self - the gear is slipping, so we opened it and sent for an overhaul. see pics. Its a LUCAS TVS unit.

in the meanwhile I found a pair of denters who have accepted the challenge of restoring my heraldīs "Bodily charm" the slim one is RAGHUVEER and the short one is LALLU RAM!!! They have already started beating up the floor as it is the worst condition wise!!

By the evening we had removed the pertol tank, boot lid, front bumper, grill and all the seats. The petrol tank, most probably, has not seen a gas station in the last 20 years though not in a very bad condition. The petrol sucktion pipe was choked, the Fuel Guage mechanism was jammed and the petrol residues stinked like hell! The floor is really really in a bad shape as you can see:eek:.

Today we will start with the paint removal!!

Paint removal started.

Great to see the work progressing already! You do intend to remove the chassis off the body (as I have been doing in my restoration) and get that done up too? Going by the underside condition of this car, I would say it needs that treatment!

Also have you shown the pics. of the convertible bodytub to the denters?

Yes, after all the rust I have seen I will definately remove the body from the chassis to see whats underneath.
I did show the pics to the denter he said he will study it later.
Yesterday night somebody broke the front glass (windshield) of my car :Frustrati
Now I will again need your help to source a windshield for my herald - Please help please:. Where can I find a new windshield?

Are the windscreen/windshields of all the standard herald models the same?

Sorry to hear about your windscreen! You shoud take the garage guys to task for their negligence if it happened in their premises!

I suspect you can still get used ones (no new ones anymore AFAIK) in Madras and hyd. but cant be sure how good they would be- ie. common to find lots of scratches etc. but in one-piece.
'will try here and let you know.a

Also I notice for the first time, your car doesnt have the vents on the bonnet (from the pics. showing the front)
Which means it would've had the roof as per the later model mk2s (broad C-pillar)

Can you pls let me know where exactly the vents were located on the bonnet?

Do you have a target date in mind when to finish the restoration? If yes, take it out of your mind and enjoy the time with the restoration car sweetly. The more time you spend with her, the more pleasure you get driving her later.

Are all the papers of this car in order?
