Is this from India ? Do we see any of the known Holkar cars here ?
The dark car that H.H. is standing by is supposed to be a Bugatti. The photo was taken in Europe. Have not been able to identify the car.

With all the makings of a best seller, it sprung from a jilted mistress and her new lover, and her jealous former Master, the erstwhile ruler of Indore. The Maharaja allegedly sent assassins after her, and they were driving a red Maxwell - a brand which I had only vaguely heard of before as being American. It must have been a rare sight event then presumably.

A couple of days later, by sheer coincidence, I was chatting with an elderly gent in Pune about the good ol' days and he was talking about his grandfather's cars. One of them was a red Maxwell, that had been earlier involved in a sensational murder case in Bombay. What are the odds!

Regrettably no more details or photos of the car are available.
karl from where do u source all this info more than the car this time the story is great

If you have a big enough bank account, it appears the ex-Holkar Hispano Suiza J12 is now restored and available.

The car in the lower photo however, is the identical R-R Phantom III, chassis 3AX147.

The Holkar Alfa Romeo 6C-1750 by Gurney Nutting (in 1/24 scale)

H.H.Yeshwantrao Holkar had many an interesting car in his enviable collection. Many were larger and more colourful; and some more prestigious. But none were more menacing and restrained than this 6C-1750.

Why H.H. chose this "high hat" coupe for such a sporty chassis, we shall probably never know. But, with a fire breathing 6 cylinder supercharged motor in its belly, this car was unlikely to have been a laggard in the athletic department.

H.H. had a unique sense of style in everything from cars to palaces to furnishings. The hood ornament was no run of the mill Lalique. Rather, it is the large and much rarer "Aerofoil" by Marius Ernest Sabino of Paris. The all knowing www says only 3 exist - take that with a boulder of salt however.

Amazingly, this car still exists in body; though the "soul" (engine and transmission) seem to have been long gone.

Few of us have, or are likely to ever see this car in its pristine beauty. My sincere gratitude to two very Distinguished BHP-ians for their help.

Beautiful scale model.
A picture of the car (below) taken a few decades ago, it had already lost its mechanical's.
Finally landed up on Altamount Road, Mumbai. Sadly, engine and gearbox lost forever.

Cheers harit

Made by yours truly. Can't you see it has been mauled in a few places by wild cats ?

Black is an impossible colour to not show blemishes.

The base was the Union 1/24 kit -not much left of it, save for the radiator, bonnet, headlamps and tires & wheels.

The mud guards are ex-milk bottle caps. The "Sabino" hood ornament is clear plastic and the base of a push pin. The foot boards are aluminium foil from my favourite cigarette pack.

Re: Holkar magic - the fabulous cars of H.H. Maharaja Yeshwantrao Holkar of Indore

Found this about the Shikar caravans/camps of HH Holkar.

Quote:
His interests were even grander than that, as he was also a gourmet who loved music, reading, swimming, playing tennis, golf and bridge and of course shikar, the sport of hunting.

He probably owned the largest fleet of shikar transport! Not just some ordinary caravans, but a whole camp, designed by Muthesius, one of the masters of the Art Deco style! This 1936 shikar camp used to be parked in a the shape of a star and consisted of four caravan trucks around a luxurious and royal central tent. The vehicles were fitted out with pull-out side panels, lift-up roofs, fold-out floors on hydraulic supports and folding door connections, and provided enough space for a dining room, bath, bedroom and study. The rooms were furnished with stacking chairs, armchairs, dining table with chairs and bedroom furniture. This special camping transport is described by Reto Niggl in his book Eckart Muthesius – The Maharaja’s Palace in Indore.

Is this the Rolls or the Hispano? I have the Rolls registered as HS 3 not HSC 3 - perhaps I was mistaken?

It is the R-R PIII (fuel cap is higher up on the quarter panel, the Hispano Suiza had it on top of the rear wings).

The original specification called for "Silver Background, Blue Figures H.S.3".

By the time this photo was taken, it seems to have changed to the red plate and HSC3.

The car is due to be presented at Retromobile in the Artcurial auction. I believe it will also be presented at Pebble Beach later this year.

What is the last known status for 3AX147? I have seen no recent pictures or confirmed sightings. Imagine if it were to be reunited - what a pair!

The last I knew is that 3AX147 was still derelict. That was in 2010. They would make a fabulous pair!

Sound logic, certainly! But upgrading from a Bugatti Brescia & an Alfa Romeo 2900B implies inverted snobbery of a peculiar order!

A lovely photo of Bentley 3 1/2 Litre, B194FB. Interesting that the beautiful split rear window has now been changed to a single pane glass.

The Red and Blue Maharaja / Maharani lights are above the windshield header on this car too!
