Adding to posts above, most modular helmets are heavier. Better built ones are significantly heavier. Part of this is by design- the flip up mechanism demands a heavier bucket to hold it- and part of this is due to the target audience- it is mostly the Tourers crowd that are interested in such helmets, and that market also prioritises things like noise isolation a fair bit more than the regular full-faced crowd does, but also wants this flip up mechanism. This means that more material is needed to achieve similar safety (at least by ECE 22.05) and creature comforts like noise isolation, as opposed to full-faced ones.

This further addition to weight doesn't quite go well with the new regulation (ECE 22.06), which mandates oblique/angular impact tests and restricts how much rotational forces a helmet should allow, to minimise chances of concussions or brain injuries. A heavier helmet fundamentally allows more of this rotational force, due to inertia and angular momentum.

Even most new full-faced helmets have switched to a more round design from 'edgy' and 'futuristic' ones from earlier, in order to pass this newer regulation. But modular helmets, as of now, weigh significantly more, and hence will be less safe no matter what- this includes even a ECE 22.06 rated modular helmet; an equivalent ECE 22.06 rated full-face helmet will be significantly safer.

All that aside, I have owned a Studds modular helmet for about 2 years. And I can tell you, given our climate, I was very happy to keep it flipped up frequently. Zero discipline or understanding. And it is because of this very reason that I decided to never buy a modular helmet again. I will have the urge to flip it open on a hot & humid day. I decided that I'd rather get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Shyam is absolutely spot on with everything he has said. In fact nothing lesser rated than ECE full face helmet adorns my head or nothing. Helps in being discreet too . This modular business is not for me as the mechanism getting loose and banging open on impact (unlikely, but still), or having left it open at that moment out of habit is the last thing I need.

The simple argument that ends all this is to drive rather than ride. Which when extended, can take the extreme form of "why not just sit at home instead of stepping out ever"

Well, having had to economize on my rides since the last year has me experiencing exactly this. I will take an uncomfortable helmet and sweating in my jacket on a hot Saturday afternoon over sitting at home. The motorcycle, hills and highways are waiting! :XD. One life to ride. Ashte. Safety is how much you value yourself, as Shumi says on MotorInc. Get a balaclava or a helmet hair cap with it.

Oh yes, excellent helmet I would say. I have the Carbon fiber FF805. If it wasn't for the weight penalty (comparative), I would have gone for this. It has excellent padding and build quality feels better than Airoh in my opinion. But the overall size, being ADV style, is huge. I use the provided tearoff to keep the visor scratchfree. You may need to unscrew that pinlock tab to apply the tearoff film.

Yes I was surprised with the quality of LS2, including the inner padding. I had bought a LS2 in 2012 with my Duke, which was a decent helmet. My perception of the brand was stuck to that helmet . I didnt knew LS2 made such quality stuff.

I tried the FF805 as well, fantastic choice I would say. The inner padding on FF805 and MX701 is same. I didnt got any tear off film with the helmet

Please check any YouTube unboxing video online to confirm if it doesn't have it . I got 5 tearoffs, 1 pinlock, a neck support air cushion, carry bag and cover, allen key and dark visor as standard plus 10 percent discount. These two models are just below their FIM flagship in India.

Finally bit the bullet and bought a new helmet last Friday. Ls2 ff805 Thunder Plus Carbon in medium size. Had to look around several stores before i found the colour i wanted. Paid 34K at Helmet Mall, opposite to Urvashi theatre.





This came in a nice package with carry bag and cover. Other stuff inside included a bunch tear offs (which i will never use), neck pillow, PinLock 120 max vision and a dark tinted visor. Some pictures below





Did a quick ride to Mysore and back, with about 3 hours of riding time either side. No discomfort, pain or other things. What a night and day difference this has made! Now i can ride all day, without worrying, only to stop for bio-breaks, hunger and sore ass!

Few observations between Ls2 and my older Shark helmet




Positives

+ Very comfortable and super light. Hardly feel like i am wearing anything. Just to qualify, if my older Shark was also the correct size, it would also feel the same.
+ Wider opening and better vision, although the Shark wasn't all that bad
+ Nice packaging and Pinlock included
+ Excellent air vents. Cool breeze on the mouth/nose, on the forehead and on the scalp keeps my head and face cool.
+ Double D ring, ECE 22.06 and ISI

Negatives

-Not as silent as the Shark. Wind noise is noticeable. This could also be because of the air vents.
- Chin curtain is not very effective. The coverage is not good so lets air, some fine dust particles inside the helmet. I was able to inhale smoke easily. Some fine dust also got into my eye several times. You can see the chin curtain coverage between LS2 and Shark. Not sure if air vents are also letting debris inside. The Shark was super silent and during my ,rather uncomfortable 3.5K kms, ownership, absolutely nothing got inside the helmet!

- No drop down sun visor. The shark had it and it was very useful, especially when riding directly facing the sun. Need to use the glasses now. I guess glasses would be default to protect my eyes from debris
- Also noticed that there were more than usual insects and other debris on the visor compared to the shark. Could be because the visor area is larger!
- Helmet liners are good but not as plush as in the Shark. There is space for speakers inside the helmet but this area is covered in the Shark but in LS2, it is exposed.
- The helmet latching after the the D ring is magnet type unlike the clip on type on the shark. The magnet appears to be strong though!

Will use this Ls2 for some time and log more miles. I feel it provides descent value, although the price could have been less than 30K.

Absolutely agree with everything about the LS2 helmet. Notable being the chin curtain inefficiency, a lot of grime does get in. The wind noise is also a factor. Hope you enjoy your helmet.

Correct regarding the chin curtain and noise level. Although I think it's better than other models. I also felt the ventilation is poor but I got used to it. The lack of inner visor is badly felt, though its compensated by an easy removal system for the main visor.

They provide a smoke visor. I carry the smoke visor with the string bag they give and swap it with the clear visor when it gets darker. This has become normal for me since the visor swap mechanism is easy to use.

Anti-fog insert

Try as I might, the Pinlock 120 that came with the Arai XD4 didn't seal well.
I had also heard & read that this could be an issue due to the curvature ar the base of the visor.
So I got a Raleri anti fog insert (specific to Arai). I've had them for a while on another helmet too and they've worked better for me than Pinlock.
Thing is, I never remove my Pinlock come hail or sunshine. With the Pinlock I faced a bit of distortion & blurriness after some time using it. I was advised that it would be better to remove it during hot afternoons (not sure why).

Happy to report, I haven't faced this even after more than a year of using the Raleri insert.
With the Arai, a recent 600kms ride through foggy mornings acted as a good test and I must say it came out aces. It's sealed well and I hope it lasts too.

Hi, I am currently using an HJC CS-15 and want to upgrade. Have seen and tried multiple options. Listing them below with my comments. Please note I have tried these at a store and did not ride at all. Btw, i currently ride a Bear 650 and a Duke 390. So no track use. Major use will be for city and highway rides and occasional touring.

1. KYT R2R Pro - Size S - Extremely comfortable and felt very very light. Price 15k
2. KYT TT Revo - Same as above. Price 8k
3. LS2 Vector 2 - Comfortable but felt heavy. Price 13k
4. LS2 FF805 Thunder Carbon - Extremely light and brilliant vision. The padding quality was the best. Price 32k
5. AGV K1S - yet to try but heart says go for an AGV. Price 28.5k

Can you guys suggest how should I proceed ahead with the same. My budget is 35k.

FF805 is a no brainer if it fits. It is for an uncommon long oval head shape. Don't even think about the AGVs unless you really want to practice the 'see where you want to go' drills. The K1s feels like sitting in a car with how poor the visibility is.

I have both the MX701 and the FF805 in carbon fiber variant and I love how compact the FF805 is. I initially purchased the MX701 (M) but over sometime I realized that it's a bit of tight fit and not so comfortable in city. Eventually I ended up looking for a second helmet (another motivation was that I wanted to replace the aging MT Revenge helmet that is otherwise used by my wife whenever riding pillion). After little search, I ended up getting the FF805 (L) and it's significantly more comfortable, and doesn't loose out on peripheral vision that much which other track/race/street helmets don't usually provide.
When buying the FF805, we really didn't intend to spent 35k for a second lid as I spent similiar money on a lid already. I spent a lot of time at the store, trying to convince myself to buy a lid in 8-10k budget and while they were decent, nothing even came close to the comfort of FF805. Wife agreed that it's worth the money due to comfort (she doesn't know much about helmets or carbon fiber for that matter though). Now atleast, I don't have to show the non-carbon variant for lower cost

In addition both the LS2 helmets have good visor, with the MX701 visor being the better out of two and easily noticeable. FF805 is more ventilated in my experience whereas MX701 does feel a bit suffocating.
I prefer the MX701 when I ride facing the sun, it doesn't require me to use a sunglass (I wear spectales). The inbuilt sunglasses in helmet I find waste for people with eyeglasses as it feels weird.

One thing I found very confusing about the LS2 helmets Chin Padding is that they describe sizes as XS-XL whereas when you look for spare liners they show up as S, M, L . Shell of M-L are common from what I could find, but the liners are what makes them a tight fit so a thinner liner could do the magic for me, however I can't seem to figure out what size would actually help.

I can vouch for the FF805 Carbon as a very comfortable helmet. It's not just the weight but the visibility as well that stands out. You get a spare tintend/dark visor as well. The paddings are good quality too.
The only other helmet which I felt like buying was KYT NZ Race Carbon. Felt lighter than FF805 to be honest but I have heard about it being noisy hence I didn't proceed in the direction.

Bit the bullet and got a Shoei Z8 TC10 Retro . Fell in love instantly with this one. Also it was a fantastic experience purchasing from lanesplit noida.

Did a short ride and the helmet is extremely comfortable. Really happy with one.
