12 Jyotirlingas - Route Info

Hi experts,

I have plans to do the maximum number of Jyotirlingas, by car, in the month of February / March 2012. As per the Shiva Purana, the 12 jyotirlingas in India are:

1 Somnath - Prabhas Patan, Saurashtra, Gujarat
2 Mallikārjuna - Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh
3 Mahakaleshwar - Mahakal, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
4 Omkareshwar - Omkareshwar, Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh
5 Kedarnath - Kedarnath, Uttarakhand
6 Bhimashankar - Bhimashankar, Maharashtra
7 Kashi Vishwanath - Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
8 Trimbakeshwar - Trimbak, Nashik, Maharashtra
9 Vaidyanath - Vaidyanath, Jharkhand
10 Nageshvara - Dwarka, Gujarat
11 Rameshwar - Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu
12 Grishneshwar - Near Ellora, Aurangabad, Maharashtra

Here is the link of the Google Map for these 12 Jyotirlingas: 12 Jyotirlingas map, Shiva puja : Travel guide

My Constraints:

Now the plans are to visit as many Jyotirlingas as we can, with the following constraints:

1. The maximum time which I can get is 7 - 10 days
2. There will be 2 drivers to drive from a total of 3 passengers on board
3. Car is NOT finalized yet
4. Driving in day / night is not an issue unless the road quality is good and route is safe
5. Would also visit Shirdi & Shani Shingnapur
6. Start and Finish point is New Delhi

My Plans:

As per my knowledge and with the above constraints, we can cover the places in MP and MH only. Rest of the places can be covered later.

Places which can be covered in this trip:
  • Mahakaleshwar - Mahakal, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
  • Omkareshwar - Omkareshwar, Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh
  • Bhimashankar - Bhimashankar, Maharashtra
  • Trimbakeshwar - Trimbak, Nashik, Maharashtra
  • Grishneshwar - Near Ellora, Aurangabad, Maharashtra
  • Parli vaidtanath
  • Aundha Nagnath
  • Shirdi
  • Shani Shingnapur
  • One night halt at Andheri, Mumbai

My Queries:

Now, I have following queries:

1. Can we really cover the places mentioned above in 7-10 days time?
2. Which route and sequence shall be taken to do the above mentioned places starting from New Delhi?
3. Can we cover Somnath and Dwarka in Gujarat also during this trip? Or will it be too hectic? Or shall we cover Mallikārjuna at Srisailam instead of Gujarat?
4. Anything else we can visit enroute in addition to the above list?
5. Need a detailed schedule on this with suggested hotels, restaurants on the way. Which routes / roads to be avoided?
6. Any Do's and Don'ts or any additional information?

Please note that I have started the planing for this trip without having the clarity on my leaves and other required things. Please bear with me!

MODS: I have started this thread as I could not get the required information in the existing threads. There are couple of threads which cover only 3-4 places.

Cheers!

Re: 12 Jyotirlingas - Route Info

Kedarnath is closed anyway till May due to winter.
Vaidyanath - location is disputed between the one in Jharkand and at Parli in Maharashtra.

Route plan as follows:

D1: Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Shivpuri-Guna-Biaora-Dewas-Ujjain
D2: Ujjain-Indore-Omkareshwar-Khandwa-Burhanpur-Edalabad-Aurangabad
D3: Aurangabad-Grishneswar-Aurangabad-Jalna-Parbhani-Aundha Nagnath
D4: Aundha Nagnath-Parbhani-Gangakhed-Parli Vaidyanath-Beed-Aurangabad
D5: Aurangabad-Shani Singnapur-Shirdi-Sangamaner-Manchar-Bhimashankar
D6: Bhimashankar-Manchar-Sangamaner-Nashik-Triambakeswar-Bombay
D7: Bombay-Surat-Baroda-Ahmedabad-Udaipur
D8: Udaipur-Jaipur-Delhi

If you want to add GJ also,
D7: Bombay-Surat-Baroda-Ahmedabad-Rajkot-JUnagad-Somnath
D8: Somnath-Porbandar-Dwaraka-Nageswar-Dwaraka-Jamnagar-Maliya-Samakiyari-Radhanpur
D9: Radhanpur-Palanpur-Pindwara-Jodhpur-Beawar-Kishnagarh-Jaipur-Delhi

Be prepared for bad roads in some sections.
Some flexibility in day's destinations.
Some night driving in case of time overruns, especially on Day 8/9
In places like Bhimashankar, you have to depend on temple dharamsalas
In places like Triambakeswar, constant crowds means you have to engage services of "priests" to gain faster entry.
I am assuming that you are going to be up early and not going to perform any long poojas at any of the temples.
They are normally not crowded although Triambakeswar and Bhimashankar attract big crowds some days.

You can drop in at Ellora which is next to Grishneswar.
You can visit Dwaraka when you visit Grishneswar.

This is a quick response, details can be worked out further.

Re: 12 Jyotirlingas - Route Info

I think it would be better if it would be like
delhi-gwalior-ujjain-omkareswar-burhanpur-aundha-parbhani-parli-aurangabad-grishneswar-shirdi-nasik-trimbak-nasik-bhimshankar-chakan-bombay-ahmedabad-udaipur-delhi

ujjain - indore 4 lane via sawyer. no need to go dewas. it seems indore to chittor is 4 lane in MP side
Omakar-burhanpur road was ok in may 2011
burhanpur- aundha -- good. one can average 50-60 easily
Aundha-parbhani-aurangabd no idea
shridi- nasik via yeola is very good 4 lane.
nasik-trimbak good road

In places like Bhimashankar, you have to depend on temple dharamsalas

The only decent place to saty at Bhimashankar is Hotel Blue Mormon. Google it for details.

In places like Triambakeswar, constant crowds means you have to engage services of "priests" to gain faster entry.

Here is a contact number of one of the small lodges nearby the temple. These guys may help you scout for a priest. (02594) 233477 & 234488.

Concur with the Maharashtra plans. Seems well 'routed' and 'doable.'

D7- MUMBAI -SOMNATH- on one day? I would think it would be possible from Vadodara and Diu, rather than waste time to A'bad and Rajkot. Last month the Baroda-Mumbai run itself on a Sunday took 6 hours.

D8- Somnath onwards take the better roads- Rajkot, A'bad, Udaipur- about 10+ hours, and I would think if you are in the mood then to aim for Nathdwara or Ajmer for the night halt. Will just make your last leg less stressful into Delhi.

The GJ driving seems a little pressed for time, dedicated efforts of 18+ hours would need to be planned for, you could do in lesser time.... but mentally- 18+hours.

Skip the sightseeing- :-P or use zoom, point and shoot and scoot.

With prayers and blessings for this noble cause, am sure you would be able to nix this.

This is great route, except for the time required at places to get Darshan!
At Shani Shingnapur, Shirdi, etc. you may have to spend few hours to get Darshan. Same may be true at Trimbakeshwar and some other Jyotirlingas. This may throw the travel plan little out of gear. Keeping a day or two spare may help.

Yes, it is possible with an early morning start like 5 am. You can cross Ahmedabad in 8-9 hours, Rajkot will take you another 3 and Somnath another 4 from there.

Avoid the route Baroda-Diu-Somnath. The speeds and convenience of driving on the 4-laned roads via Ahmedabad & Rajkot (4 lanes till Jetpur before Junagadh) will get you there faster. On teh other hand, if you turn off at Baroda, you have to go on 2-laned busy roads. Besides, roads are non-exsitent around Una (near Diu) till Somnath.

If you have to visit Nathdwara, then you will have to take the NH8 route from Udaipur which is 2-laned and not as fast as the NH76/NH79 GQ route via Chittorgarh & Bhilwara. Since the NH8 beyond Ajmer is being widened and in bad condition, take the Ajmer-Nasirabad-Kishangarh road.

Re: 12 Jyotirlingas - Route Info

hey guys
i need an urgent advice.
my parents would be travelling to indore and ujjain to visit mahakaleshwar and omkareshwar shrines. we are thinking of taking the del-jaipur-chittorgarh-ratlam-indore route instead of del-agra-sivpuri-dewas route. we plan to travel the strech in one go and reach ujjain the same night.
please advice on the route to be taken .

Yes, that is a better route. But turn off at Ratlam for Ujjain since that road is better than the direct road to Indore via Lebad. Target clearing Chittorgarh by late lunch time so that you can be on schedule for late evening arrival at Ujjain.

Stick to the Indore highway till Badnawar and then turn towards Ujjain.

Hi Mayank,

Please advise the latest road conditions on this route? And more details on the shrines visited by your parents.

Hi HVK,

Instead of going via Chittorgarh (around 100 kms extra), how about this route?:
Jaipur --> Tonk --> Kota --> Susner --> Ujjain

Cheers!

No, those are bad roads. Hence, I have suggested the Chittorgarh-Ratlam-Ujjain route which is fantastic 4-lane road all the way from Delhi to Badnawar just short of Ujjain. Excluding some bad stretches in Chittorgarh-Neemuch sector.

Re: 12 Jyotirlingas - Route Info

Hi Experts,

I am back again with my Jyotirlinga Pilgrimage Plans. I couldn't get the leaves earlier this year but now it seems that I am going to do this route in the second half of November.

Due to a marriage function coming up at Nagpur, I would like to cover these 8/9 Jyotirlingas this time. I had to postpone my Leh Trip for the next year just because this is on priority and we don't get so many leaves at a stretch that too twice a year. The vehicle for this journey of around 6000 kms shall be Tata Safari with at least 2 drivers.

So here is my route plan:

Route Plan - Summary
  • Delhi - Jaipur - Beawar - Pali - Jalore - Morbi - Jamnagar – Dwarka – 1338 Kms – 21 hrs

Now my queries:
  1. The route being planned to visit these places is okay?
  2. Current road conditions?
  3. Petrol pumps and eateries along this route?
  4. How is the day wise plan? Will we be able to achieve this?
    • Distance is do-able? I have doubts about our first day i.e. from Delhi to Dwarka and 21st Nov.
    • Darshan time at respective place on a specific day is okay?
  5. Please suggest hotels for night stays.
  6. Any extra precautions / advice on each of these places?
Please excuse if there are any mistakes in planing this route.

Need your help and support to plan this route of 6,000 kms because this is like a dream for me at the moment.

Cheers!
