Tarring and widening work has finally begun on the 20kms stretch between Akkalkot and Wagdari border from where the SH10 towards Aland-Gulbarga starts.

In the meantime,Hyd-Gulbarga-Bijapur-Islampur-NH4 is a very good option to reach Pune.Extra kms but no headache or stress.Time taken is around 9-10hrs to Pune.

I drove mumbai to hyderabad 1st week of november. Took me a little over 12 hours. Hyderabad till Sholapur roads are not excellent but definitely better than what they were. Sholapur to Bombay roads are good. My vote goes to good old nh9. I have not driven in the otherroute so can't compare.

Hi, Did you take NH-9 from Pune all the way to hyderabad? I am planning for Mumbai to hyd on 19th Dec 2014. Is NH-9 better now? specially from Humnabad to Zaheerabad and beyond. Any information will be very helpful

Yes I took NH9 all the way till Hyderabad. Roads are very good from mumbai till Sholapur. Post Sholapur its a little patchy with few potholes to slow you down a bit but better than what I saw last time. Managed to reach gachibowli from Mumbai in little over 12 hours. IMHO you can take NH9.

I did Pune-Hyderabad on 6th December. Between Solapur and Sadashivpet roads are patchy. But traffic is thin. You can still maintain 80-100 between rough patches. I did this stretch in less than 8 hours with 1 break.

NH9 is still the same old story and now 4 laning and land acquisition work has begun between Solapur and Sangareddy.NH9 is still your best bet.Take the Solapur-Sadashivpet real slow.Budget for a minimum of 5hrs to cover this 250 kms stretch.

I'm planning to travel from Pune to Rajahmundry and so want to cover the pune-hyd stretch in the shortest time. I'm tempted to try the Akkalkot-gulbarga-sedam stretch because if the 20km stretch is tarred by now, it will cut down the travel time considerably.
Most importantly I'd be getting on to the ORR right in the middle. Does anyone have any latest updates on the akkalkot-gulbarga stretch.

Route taken was,

Hyderabad - Zaheerabad - Humnabad - Naldurg - Sholapur - Pune - expressway - Mumbai.

Hyderabad till zaheerabad is okay, once you hit Humnabad the broken path begins, this is all the way the same way till Naldurg. The road being under construction and the existing road badly broken means it will take a lot more time than it normally would.

Post Naldurg, the roads are better till sholapur, better as in manageable. post sholapur, there are a few deviations as the highway is still under construction but wont be that badly broken till pune.

Post pune it was a breeze to drive till mumbai.

As the highway is being constructed, I hope this gets done in a couple of years.

1) 12 hours or more ? Leaving at 6 am sufficient or earlier needed ?

2)Any really precarious stretches ? My car has real low GC and low profile tyres as well.

3)Where is fuelling up recommended ? Standard unadulterated diesel. Which are the 'safe' pumps.

4) No security concerns along this stretch are there ?

5) Possible halts for lunch ?

I usually travel from Pune to Hyderabad. The last time I travelled I started at 5am in chinchwad, reached solapur by 9am and then reached patancheru by 4pm.
This includes a 1hr break in Solapur and another 1hr break somewhere in KA.

I travelled in my Punto and didn't find any really bad patches. I had another Figo for company and it also ran fairly comfortably.

3)Where is fuelling up recommended ? Standard unadulterated diesel. Which are the 'safe' pumps.

I fill up in Pune and the next fuel stop is at Hotel Gujarat in KA. It's popular and had the lowest fuel price in this stretch. I regularly use it and found no issues.

4) No security concerns along this stretch are there ?

Didn't had any security issues so far, touch wood.

5) Possible halts for lunch ?

We usually pack lunch, but found ppl stopping at Hotel Gujarat.
