No, I did not take this route to Chennai but instead drove to Chennai via Bangalore. I was warned not to take this route via Ongole and Nellore as there was a breach near Nellore.

Hi, driving from Hyderabad towards Bangalore in the night, we stayed at our friend's place in Yelahanka. Left their home by 7 am and drove through the city ( Hosur Road from Brigade Road) and reached Chennai via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Vellore, Ranipet and Poonamalee. From Sriperumpudur onwards we started getting bad roads, impacted due to earlier heavy rains. Our trip was last week. The condition of the roads especially inside the city has worsened after the heavy rains on this Monday.

Can anyone let me know if the route via Ongole and Nellore has been repaired. I need to go to Chennai this weekend with family.

Dear Team BHPians,

I'm planning to make a to and fro trip from Hyderabad to Chennai this weekend. I'm planning to start by the early hours of Saturday (around 3 AM) from Hyderabad. For the return trip, I'm planning to start from Chennai by 12 noon - 1 PM on Sunday and reach Hyderabad by midnight/early hours of Monday.

I'm planning to take the Hyderabad -> NAM Expressway -> Ongole -> Nellore -> Chennai route. Would appreciate any inputs about the road conditions and the expected weather conditions along the route and at Chennai, in light of the recent inclement weather in Chennai.

Or, should I consider other options (flight/train/bus) given the current conditions? Please advise. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, as of now, Chennai is experiencing heavy to very heavy rains since yesterday night in some areas or this morning in most areas. City and outskirts are flooded and waterlogged. More heavy rains to follow in the next couple of days. All the access roads into Chennai have also seen heavy rains in the last fortnight or so. Please call up your friends, listen to forecasts and get the most updated news from platforms like Team BHP before you start driving to Chennai. I live in Pallikaranai where there is no electricity since 3 pm today.

Don't go to Chennai unless you have absolutely no choice.
The city is under a lot of stress with water logging and power cuts.
Almost every major road is broken and in some places the roads have caved in.

NH5 around Chennai was washed away a couple of weeks back, don't think that would operational so quickly, means you would need detour.

As of today, Chennai airport has been shutdown and there are warnings for heavy rainfall in next four days.

Haven't seen much on it post the wash-away, but considering the extent of damage and continued rains later on the chances of quick repair look faint.

What is the alternate that you could consider in such a case?

I will take the Hyderabad-Kurnool-Kadapa-Tirupathi-Chennai.

I have no specific preferences on the route. Just want something that is safe and comfortable.

Go via Kurnool-Kadapa-Chittoor only if you treat your car as a machine and do not have any love and affection for it. Bad patches, potholes, and diversions are enough to get the BP high enough to get admitted to ICU. I did it in October this year.

Kurnool-Kadapa-Chittoor-Vellore or Kurnool-Davanhalli-Hoskote-Kolar-Chittoor-Vellore or Kurnool-Davanhalli-Whitefield-Krishnagiri-Vellore are all 10-11 hours drive time.

My friend drove from Chennai to Nellore and back last week and Chennai to Tirupati yesterday. He did not rave about it but did not even crib about it.

Thanks a lot for this update. I have decided to take my usual route via Addanki to Chennai.
Plan to leave very early in the morning at around 4 AM or so.
The first 80% of the journey will be very (hopefully) smooth and give me more daylight hours to tackle the last lap.

I travelled yesterday by Bus from Chennai to Hyderabad. Did not see any really bad stretches till Nellore. There was one bad stretch for 2 kms or so near Gummidipoondi. Otherwise the road conditions were the same as before the rains. The roads inside the chennai city after Puzhal is a different story altogether. we can safely claim that Moon surface is much better than chennai city roads.
