Rode down to Chennai and no update as such on our usual route.
Just two rants.
1. They really need to do something about the encroachments at Piduguralla.
2. Chennai needs to learn from Hyderabad on how to build and maintain roads that lead into the city. The Hyderabad ORR is such a beauty. You enter Chennai in full chaos with no sense of direction or even street lighting.

I took the Tirupati, Kurnool route for my return journey.

Left home in Adyar at 9:00 AM. Filled fuel at the Shell bunk close to Porur.
A lot of traffic despite being a Sunday morning. Crossed Tiruthani and then took a bypass road before Tirupati to get towards Kadapa.
Till the connection to the National Highway at Kadapa it is a two lane road with a lot of speed breakers.
It's a very tiring stretch and I would never recommend this route. Thankfully I was riding solo. So my mistake did not affect anyone else.

At Nandyal there is NO road for a few kilometres.

I completely skipped Kurnool and that bypass is very beautiful. But be careful as a lot of photographers and models on that stretch.

From Kurnool to Hyderabad the road is awesome.

I reached home at exactly 9:00 PM.

I had taken multiple breaks for tea and water.
Lunch was at some Punjabi Dhaba at Kadapa.

NH5-SH2 (NAM)-NH9 would be the fastest. This would be atleast an hour slower for sure.

Nellore-Mydukur is good 2-lane road now. Kadapa-Nandyal-Kurnool 4-laning is also mostly done except for the Nandyal section which bblost mentioned.

This is the best route with complete four lane through out (except for few villages on SH for a few meters).
You can average 90KM/Hour very comfortably.
I generally go Hyderabad Attapur to Nellore in 7 hours (6 hours drive + 1 hour of breaks)
Nellore to Sulurpet - 1 hour
Sulurpet to Nallur Toll at Redhills - 1 hour

From Redhills it is always city traffic and depends on which part of Chennai you end. My house is close to Madhavaram Bypass so I take ~30 minutes to reach home from Redhills.

Guys - Best route between HYD & Chennai

1. Chennai (6way)-Ongole -(4way)-Addanki-(4way)- Nalgonda-(4way) - HYD

630 Km's approx - 10-11 Hrs with breaks

You can try other routes which are either more KM's or bad roads in between

I am planning to do Hyderabad - Chennai on 27th of this month and google maps is suggesting the exact route mentioned by you. Is it OK if I simply follow the google maps or should I be watchful about some bypass particularly?

Just follow Google maps. It is quite accurate for the entire route.

Nalgonda Police using speed guns on random days near the Nalgonda bypass nowadays. Charging Rs.400/- for over-speeding beyond 80KMPH. Watch out for them on the road towards Hyderabad. Since its random, better to be in limits when passing the bypass

I am going to drive down to Chennai (~Adyar) on a week day on business purpose. Going to have company of a friend (male) during the drive. Planning to start early in the morning at Hyderabad and reach Chennai(Adyar) by 8-9pm.
I know that at this point, you may be wondering why on the road am I taking that much time.
Well, this is my first trip to Chennai by road and I just don't want to do a simple A-B (or H to C ) drive. Its so boring.
So, I get that the above stretch is the recommended one to drive, wanted to ask dear members, are there any places of interest on the way to make the drive a little less boring and the journey a memorable one?

I can endure long hours on road, so doing a little detour here and there is not a problem. Longest I have driven so far in a single day is 1100km in 20hrs. So, hit me with your suggestions and advice.

@ Deetee - If you need little fun , then you can try to come via Nagarjuna Sagar Dam road. Take Sagar road from Hyderabad ( mind you, it's single road last time I drove on that road) after Nagarjuna sagar, you will hit Macherla, then Narasaraopet, Addanki - get on Chennai highway from there. Please be aware that untill Narasaraopet road may not be great.

Not sure if Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is full now. Untill Dam, Its a good drive.
