Thanks for the update. I was planning to drive the other way from HYD to Chennai on Sunday the 29th and was about to post the question. Was 11 hours driving comfortably or breakneck speeds? I am travelling with 2 - 4 year olds and am sure will need a couple of additional stops but want to reach in 12 hours or so driving between 80-120.

We drove 80 to 100 mostly except for a brief stretch between sullurupet-Ongole where I did 100-110. We traveled with two 2-year olds as well. Maybe it was the weather (cloudy and light drizzle throughout) but the kids slept 4-5 hours at the start of the drive and were generally subdued the rest of the way so didn't have to make too many stops.

Hi all,

I'm planning a Chennai-Hyderabad road trip during peak summer (April), starting from Chennai around 4 AM. Since I last made this trip a couple of years ago, I would appreciate some updated inputs:

Good Vegetarian Food Stops – Any decent vegetarian outlets on the highway for breakfast and lunch? Hoping to cover as much distance as possible by 9 AM.
Reliable Petrol Pumps – Looking for genuine and reliable petrol bunks on the Hyderabad side of the route. Might need one fuel stop along the way.
Engine Cooling Break – Driving a Renault Triber (1000cc engine). Planning a 20-minute break between breakfast and lunch to let the engine cool down during peak noon. Would that be sufficient?
Expected Travel Time – Is it still possible to reach Hyderabad in 11 hours? Managed to do it in 9.5 hours during Covid, but I’m aware traffic has increased significantly. Concerned about road conditions while exiting Chennai, NAM, and the stretch before ORR.

Short update on Chennai-Hyderabad route.
Road condition remains good throughout.
Elchuru only town left without a bypass.
Narketpally to Addanki is a breeze to drive.
Stopped at Delhi highway vegetarian restaurant after the Ongole bypass while driving from Hyderabad to Chennai. Quite a decent place with clean washrooms. Maharaja thali seems to be pricey.

Our trip last month was the slowest clocked compared to previous. Good roads but we encountered traffic heavier than previous, and mainly where there were flyover works, we lost time due to jams. Could just have been odd day.

Piduguralla bypass, what a huge relief. I would say this sector still needs bypasses at Dachepalle and Addanki over time.

Recommended stopovers would be Padmavathi Vilas(Veg), Skyview, Hotel Vivera.
I noticed "organic" foodstops have increased along the telangana section, not tried any yet, something to aim for next time.

Will be starting near OMR side, so would be helpful if someone can share the entire route

The default Google Maps route (Ongole-NAM-Hyd) is what you should follow. There is no better route.

Pick your closest ORR entry point and get to Nallur Toll.

OMR take the Chennai bypass to avoid the traffic to reach Puzhal.
Puzhal - Nellore - Ongole- Medarmatla .
At this Medarmatla junction you have to get down the flyover use the service road to turn towards Addanki.
Addanki - Miryalguda - Nalgonda - Narketpalli.
At Narketpalli you join Vijayawada to Hyderabad highway.
Narketpalli - Hyderabad.
As you cross Ramoji Film city you will get to the ORR of Hyderabad.
It might take 10 hrs for a comfortable drive.
Completely tolled road.
Between Addanki and Pidugurala the rest room stops are limited for snacks and tea breaks

I have a trip to Chennai coming up and was wondering if the route via Kurnool->Kadapa->Tirupati->Chennai, a divided or undivided highway?

Kind of bored with the Nellore route but since I will be driving with family, will only use an alternative if its a divided highway.

Kurnool to Kadapa is good, 4-lane. Kadapa to Renigunta can get annoying and dangerous. 2 lane undivided, passing through towns, considerable truck, and local traffic volume(depending on time of day). Outright avoid as with family.
