I would recommend NH45 from Chennai to Trichy and from Trichy to Thanjavur. NH45 is a very good highway to ride, from Trichy to Thanjavur they are laying road, so might be an issue for sometime, but much much much better than the other routes. I was driving at 110KM on my new i20, think about others.

I went to Kumbakonam from Thanjavur, lot of narrow roads, I wouldn't go through it for long journeys,

It would solid 4.5 hours from Chennai to Thanjavur through NH45.

Thanks Navan/carbhp,
Thanks a ton for the direction. I would look to travel on NH 45 , reach trichy and then to tanjore. Also please provide me good restaurants on the NH45 as looking at breakfast and lunch on the way. Also fuel outlets that are reliable..

Hi Funnyguru,

Please update the state of your travel once you have tried the route.

This would be helpful for others who are planning for the near future.

Regards,
Rajan.

Hi. I take this route to Trichy and back almost once a month. From Tambaram to Trichy (Toll Gate), takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes with steady driving at speeds a few notches below three digit speeds.

There are a number of restaurants on the way,
Hotel Highway near Tindivanum,
Arthi Bhavan near Tindivanam entrance (you will need to cross the road),
The newly opened Ponnuswamy on the Villipuram Bye Pass
Arya Bhavan at the end of Villipuram Bye Pass
Balaji Bhavan (old A1 Restaurant) about 5 kms before Ulandurpet Toll
Ghar Dhaba (BP petrol pump) just abour 1 1/2 kms before Ulandurpet Toll. This was under renovation last week (You will need to cross the road)
Then all the way till Trichy, there are no decent restaurants.

Fuel Stations
HP bunk just after Gudvancheri (Only Diesel)
BP bunk just after SRM (Huge one)
BP bunk along with Ghar Dhaba

Good luck

Update on Trichy to Tanjore route

With respect to the previous post on the route from trichy to tanjore for travellers, here is an update.

The highway is not fully complete and diversions in 3 or 4 places in the highway, but there are not potholes as such. Drive was pleasant except the troubles in diversions part.

During day, you can cruze at an avg of 60-70 kph. There are some intersections wherein there would be lots of traffic, especially the BHEL circle wherein you need to be careful, coz of the fact that there are many intersections and people come in from all directions. (Hope the situation to be better when the road works are complete)

The construction of the roads are 70% complete, so expect the drive to be smooth in sometime.

Night drive was a horror for me initially coz of heavy rains last week, but was tailgating a vehicle at approx 700mts so was not sprayed by the water and was also a safe drive and it was fun to drive in rain. The only problem that i found in this route as of now is the lighting, it was literally dark and one has to rely only on his vehicles headlight throughout the drive . There were lots of vehicles on the opp direction at high speeds which we see generally in all the highways, don't know what these stupid people will think while driving on the opp direction, they have a thought that nothing will happen, but they will not be fortunate always. They pose a threat to themselves and also to others who are on the right way. There shoud be some campaign of some sort where in people are taught the dangers of driving in the opp direction. (wrong way), not only to them but to people who follow rules.

This is the state as of now, but will improve once the toll is in place and some lighting would be provided in the due course on this route.

On the whole the verdict is if someone is travelling from Chennai to Tanjore, can take NH45 from Chennai to Trichy and take this highway towards tanjore for better FE, safe and pleasurable drive.

Trichy-Tanjore can be done in about an hour. Its about 60Km max.
Definitely NH45 is preferable to reach Tanjore.
If they can fix the Ariyalur SH, then it makes a good connect option to the 4L express way.

I am driving down to Tanjore on 24th Sep for the 1000 year celebrations of the Brihadeeswara Temple on the 25th. I intend taking the NH 45 till Tiruchy. The list of restuarants is very useful (@MAS) as we had difficulty on the same route back from Pondy last weekend.

Question is, is it safe to drive back during the night from Tanjore to Chennai? I will be driving my Qualis. I need to be back in Chennai on the 26th morning if possible.

I think NH45 should not be a problem. Its 4L all the way.

Road condition on NH45C may be suspect (i.e. if you go via Vikravandi/Panruti/Kumbakonam/Tanjore).
I think some one (I do not remember his handle) did this route recently in the night.

I would definitely think twice about travelling at night. I recently went to Vilupuram early morning around 4 AM on NH45, the drivers are still rash and don't give you proper signal/lane change.

Worst thing is, around 90% of the trucks don't have proper tailgate, can you believe it? when the road is literally dark and no tailgate on the trucks in front of you, what would happen?

Couple of times I had to stop the vehicle at the last moment because of government bus or truck try to pass without signal..

Has anybody tried the Lalgudi, Grand Anaicut, Thiruvayaru road? This road comes before Trichy and may avoid the traffic at Trichy bye-pass, BHEL (Kailasapuram) traffic and also avoid the bad stretches in Trichy-Thanjavur road?

Thanks carbhp, I guess I will avoid it. I have never done a night travel the 10 years since I have owned my cars basically due to the fear of such crashes.

I recently did back to back trips one to Kumbakonam- tanjore and then last week to trichy.

Definitely I would recommend NH45 only to reach Tanjore via Trichy, as NH45C is currently infested with bad roads and bad traffic. I reached Trichy in less than 5 hrs. It was a pleasure to drive even during the rain.
