Drove Hyd-Ooty and back on 30th Dec and 4th January 2011. The km long stretch just after the airport turnoff which is single laned still is riddled with potholes. So caution is needed. Rest of the road is super till Blr. And yes as Gajadonga said, the speedbreakers after chikaballpur till devanahalli is another curse on the great highway.
I must say while returning I drove from Devanahalli till Masab tank in night from 8 p.m till 4 a.m and found the traffic to be high but still very much safe for night driving. the lanes and curves are properly marked and lighted .:thumbs up
One can easily maintain speeds between 90-100kmph.

Did a round trip from Bangalore to Hyderabad 0n 7-11 Jan. Took almost 6.5 hours from Devanahalli to Shamsabad with 2 breaks of 20 minutes. Kept speed between 100 and 120. Driving was during day time. Occasional hazards of opposite traffic coming in same lane. Total toll paid one side was Rs.273.

I'm planning a trip home this month and am still in the process of deciding whether i should take the Vijayawada route or the Hyderabad route ( destination is somewhere between Hyderabad and Vijayawada ).

My question is what is the best route to get from NH7 side to Choutuppal side without encountering a lot of traffic ( and hopefully decent road conditions ). Is the outer ring road complete and can it be used by us for this purpose? Google maps shows only a small portion of this road as complete.

How is this route? I want to avoid going into hyderabad as i need to travel another 6-7 hours after that and want to avoid spending a couple of hours negotiating hyderabad itself.

Also, how is the situation in the state currently? Is the situation still tense? Would it be a better idea to go via chitoor-tirupathi-vijayawada instead ?

Either route should be fine. Blr to Hyd is bliss through-and-through. The Vijayawada route is good for up to 40 km before Kodada but Vijayawada can't be bypassed and the stretch after that (Kodada - 40 km) point is pure torture. Also, I don't know the current condition of NH4 between Bengaluru and Chittoor and the stretch from Chittoor - Putalapattu - Tirupati. Tirupati to Nayudupeta is decent.

If you end up taking the NH7, before you reach RGIA you should see some sort of an under-construction ramp to the south-east section of the ORR. A colleague of mine has driven this road and it's ready except for the ramps still under construction (which the Punto should handle with aplomb).

Here's his email (I'm taking the liberty to post it here without asking him hoping he wouldn't mind) -

Here is the link.

Somebody realized that people are accessing this stretch or there is more construction hindrance, due to which I could not take the direct route to the Shamshabad-Gachibowli section. This delayed me a lot. Had to wait for a goods train to pass. Took away about 11 minutes.

Some metrics here:

Name Description Date Total Time Moving Time Distance Distance Unit Average Speed Average Moving Speed Max Speed Speed Unit Elevation Gain Min Elevation Max Elevation Elevation Unit
1/7/2011 10:11 Outer ring road. Fri Jan 07 10:11:06 GMT+05:30 2011 1:04:39 0:56:51 73.62 km 68.32 77.7 142.25 km/h 340 407 545 m

I took the same route as described in my previous mail. Construction on Ramp up to ORR is in progress.
That mail was in response to my mail asking for some numbers after I read his first mail (below) in which he described the route.

Quote:

It was like a dream come true!!

It began with a nightmare though. I was getting late for office, but decided to take the ORR from Peddamberpet anyway. I reached the ORR junction, but there was no ramp up on to the ORR!!! Road works going on all around. And the Ramp up that takes me on to the correct lane of ORR was just starting work. I was thinking, I might have to go back and take the normal route to office. But I persisted.

I took a service lane by taking left (while coming from Vijayawada direction <crossed it and took U turn>) and the service lane allowed me decent speeds. It was populated with construction vehicles all along, with some small junctions where cyclers, bicyclers were crossing. There came a big circle that had a left turn to go to Nagarjun Sagar, I realize now I could have taken a right here and joined the ORR, but I missed it. And soon to my horror, the service lane turned into a kaccha road (no tarmac). I was like NOOOOO!!! But right there I went up a ramp down on the wrong side (with headlights on!) hoping no one was coming from the opposite direction. There was no one!!!

There was NO ONE at all!! For a distance of about 20 k.m. I was all alone on the road. No cars/vehicles or anything on all the eight lanes. It was cathartic! (Yes I am exaggerating, I crossed two tippers, maybe one Santro on the other oncoming lane, a few workers sleeping on the tarmac!!! Which made me slow down a bit.) I maintained decent speeds on this stretch. It felt like I was in a racing game, with no other players. (Gran Turismo 5, given the realistic environment)

But this stretch is brilliant, much smoother than the Shamshabad-Gachibowli stretch. There is one toll booth (only space allocated) for this stage from where I joined ORR till Shamshabad. Near Shamshabad, the left lane ends and is being worked on, beside the NH7, here you take the right lane, crane your neck up to see where you can enter the Shamshabad-Gachibowli stretch (someone made a small gap in the barrier earlier..) get on it and office in 15 minutes.

I will get back with map, speed and time details on my next drive.

It's mostly OK. However the assembly has taken session now and things could start getting different. It shouldn't matter to you. Why would there be any riots/revolts on the empty highway where no one is around to hear the protesters' protests? :)

Bangalore-Tirupati strech is decent, with most of the expansion work complete except for a couple of fly overs (KGF area)

Thanks. So this means that except for the ramps, the whole road is complete. This would save me a lot of time. I am planning to take NH7 one way and return via vijayawada. I am quite confident about the Vijayawada route but haven't done a lot of travelling in Hyderabad and i easily get confused on the roads there. However, I am inclined to take the NH7 as i think it would save me a lot of time.

I think the problem is that i would be passing over towns like Suryapet and Khammam after hyderabad and I am not sure if there are decent roads to bypass these towns/cities. I will check the situation before the date of travel and then take a call on which route to take depending on that.

They've opened the elevated road that goes over a railway track, which one passes through near Devanahalli to traffic now. I'm not sure how to describe the location I'm talking about, but it is in that place, where while going towards Hyderabad, before Nandi hills, where you would see a close elevated road under construction, and would normally have to take a narrow road beside it which has a railway track across it, and some coconut vendors on the roadside. When I was coming back from Anantapur 1 week ago, it was closed, but then when I went to Nandi hills 4 days ago, it was opened to one side of the traffic, so I assume it would have opened for both sides by now.

Thats a great relief. That is one piece which was "under construction" for the past so many years, even before the 4 laning of other areas started. This was started along with the first phase of 4 laning, which you see to a little ahead of Nandi hills turning(around 8-9 years)
Efficiency of our Railways !!!

That's good to know. I really like that road (used to travel on it often when I was in Bengaluru) despite the fact that my old car suffered a decent amount of damage on one pothole on that road (somewhere near Mulbagal).

Both towns have bypasses.

On NH9 for instance you don't need to enter Suryapet town at all, but you would pass through Nakrekal, Narketpally and Kodada which are reasonably big. I was caught in Kodada in a TDP rally while returning to Hyd on Dec. 20, but the pain lasted only for an hour and there was no mob violence. Telangana agitations could be a different story, however.

Khammam has a bypass if you want to go from Suryapet to Kothagudem/Bhadrachalam. I don't know if that's the bypass/route you want.

By the way, just as a last resort, familiarize yourself with the route via the existing ring road as well. I can help you out here if you want.

Very true. That bit of road was always like that, to the point where it just became "normal" and it would be hard to imagine it in any other state :).

Railways are generally slow to give the go-ahead to flyovers over rail tracks. The Hi-Tec City MMTS flyover at Hyderabad's been in limbo for quite a while now, and just last weekend I saw one incomplete flyover on the Mathura - Bharatpur route (Rajasthan) which looked at least a 100 years old -- it had so much dust on it!

I lived in Khammam for a year or so around 12 years back and the bypass was horrible back then. It was just a mud road, so I was thinking that it might still be in the same state. You are right that i need to be going towards Bhadrachalam. I know the route quite well from Khammam, but I am not too sure about how to get from NH7 to NH9. It would be great if you could give me some pointers :) . I am travelling this saturday and I haven't yet decided whether i will be taking the Vijayawada route or the Hyderabad route. I feel that the Hyderabad route would be faster but the problem is that I am not too familiar with the route. Thanks for the help :).

I had recently done Bangalore Hyderabad night drive. The road near bangalore has unmarked speed breakers. Please be extra careful while driving this route during night near especially upto 100 kms from Bangalore. I happened to go over the speedbreakers at a high speed as I did not notice them
Moreover some work is going on, hence at a couple of places both the ways travel in a single lane, but this is hardly for 10 kms

Hi. There was work going on, for only a couple of days last week I believe, but now, in that particular stretch, one side of the road has been made a 2 lane temporarily. The other side (i.e - Bangalore > Hyderabad direction) has been closed because a lorry flipped on its side on the other side of the road. And yes, be careful at night. The Indigo in this picture from the Accidents thread(flipped lorry in the background) crashed because at night, the driver couldn't observe the diversion properly due to the lack to radium triangles.:Frustrati

It is a golden rule, that you should come to almost an abrupt halt at every junction, when you are nearing / passing by Devanahalli, because the road is ridden with speed breakers.

I have flown over similar unmarked speed breakers that I encountered on entering Bangalore.
I don't remember the name of the road, but there was signal. It was green. I wanted to cross it while it was still green and there was no other traffic anyways.

Little did I realise that there would be a speedbreak at that signal. :Frustrati

My fully loaded bike took off with both wheels in the air. Luckily had a smooth landing.

I would recommend the route via Hyderabad. The NH 7 from B'lore to Hyd is very good.

Once you cross Hyderabad airport on your right look out for a flyover (PV Narasimha Rao Expressway), do not get onto the expressway but keep left. Once you reach the major jn (Aram Garh Jn.) where the expressway turns left - turn right and head towards Nagarjuna Sagar, Tarnaka and Vijayawada.

On that road you will reach a major circle known as Vanasthalipuram Jn. Turn right here and you are on the Vijayawada rd. (NH 9). Drive till Suryapet and turn left at Suryapet to get to Khammam.

JFYI Newpunter, this is the same route whose outline on GMaps I PMed you. Just try to get *out* of this by 1 pm rather than *in* to it as you've currently planned, and you're all set.
