re: Mumbai - Aurangabad : Route Queries

Parsh, yup the Aurangabad - Pune highway is a 4 lane highway and you can easily do 120 on this road. The roads are pretty free. I started around 2:00 in the afternoon from Aurangabad and was at Chakan around 6 in the evening. The Chakan bypass is a single lane. If you are reaching Pune at non peak hours I think going via Pune city might be a better option.

How is Aurangabad-Dhule road status? (NH211).
Because if that is good, it makes a good alternative option.

Are you saying its an alternative option to Mum-Nashik-Aur/Mum-Pune-Nagar-Aur? Mum-Dhule-Aur would be quite far off if that is the alternative considered.

No, it is not an alternative for Bombay to Dhule. Does not make any sense.
But there is a new route which can be used to go to Aurangabad with good roads - that is BOmbay-NH3 till Ghoti (after Igatpuri)-Sinnar-Shirdi-Kopargaon-Vaijapur-Aurangabad. Both these state highways (Ghoti-Sinnar & Kopargaon-Vaijapur) have been recently improved and are in better condition than the main rad via Nashik to Vaijapur.

Thanks HVK. How long do you think it will take for Mumbai-Shirdi and then for Shirdi-Aur? I am thinking now that we can do Sai darshan on way to Aur. I am assuming it will consume an hour within Shirdi.

Mum-Shirdi via Ghoti-Sinnar, 4-5 hrs from Thane
Shirdi-Aurangabad, via Shani Singnapur, 3-4 hours
Shirdi-Auranagabad, via Vaijapur, 2-3 hours

Waw. I would take Vijapur route to Aur. That means I am looking at about 7 hrs plus 1 hr in Shirdi. Will have to plan leaving Mum at 4-5am in morning then.

Sorry I did not make it clear.
I was saying that would be a good alternate option for Pune-Indore.

Yes, it is a good alternative for that. IN fact, a better route would be Pune-Aurangabad-Sillod-Ajanta-Edalabad-Burhanpur-Khandwa-Indore.

re: Mumbai - Aurangabad : Route Queries

Just back from trip to Aur yest night.

We had planned a break at Shirdi so it was in 2 phases, Mum-Shirdi and Shirdi-Vaijapur-Aur.

The Mum-Shirdi route is breeze especially upto Ghoti as it the fantastic NH3 and ideal road as it should be. We started at 5:30 am from home (powai) and were at Ghoti Toll at 7 am with a distance of 119 km covered. You can easily cruise at 120-140 on this. Ghoti-Sinnar route though two laned, is still damn good and you can achieve similar speeds though watch out for villages en route. We reached Shirdi at 8:35 am covering a total distance of 230 km. Amazing route.

The Shirdi-Vaijapur-Aur route is real pain especially upto Vaijapur but then it improves (though not greatly). The road passes through many villages and it is liked ploughed field. You got to be real choosy on which gives you want your tyres to run on and watch speed. I could go upto 100 on this but ideal would be 60 on this stretch. Before taking on this route had asked the police outpost at the junction of Shirdi and they said take this route only. Dont know how good or bad the Yeola route is. The bad of Vaijapur route may be because of the farms and villages nearby and maybe deliberately kept as it is to safeguard people to keep speeds in check. You also find the roads flooded with bikes with loads of people on them, tractors, trucks and speed gets limited due to the same too. We started from Shirdi after Darshan at 10:43 am and reached Aur, touched Holy Cross School, Aur at 12:55 pm covering a total of 335 km.

Mum-Ghoti ~ 119 km 1.5 hrs
Ghoti-Shirdi ~ 110 km 1.5 hrs
Shirdi-Aur ~ 104 km 2.10 hrs with a 20 min break at roadside Rasvanti for nice fresh Ganne Ka Ras. There are few at the starting stretch from Shirdi, so catch that refreshment.

I was thiking of Yeola route for return but then thought anyway it will involve similar route. So decided to take upon Chakan route.

Aur-Chakan/Pune-Mum Sh60-Sh27 is again breeze to drive. Superb road except for few small hitches in between, especially at the starting sections the road is pretty rough and still you have to pay a toll at 2 places of Rs 25/- each. I told the toll guys this is cheating and stealing and they also admitted to that but they have to collect it anyway. Then on the things improve drastically to smooth road. I made mistake of missing the Nagar bypass on right side and ended up in the Nagar market which is real pain to cross especially in peak hours/afternoon as I experienced. You got to watch out for villages and infrequent breaks in the dividers and people/motocycles crossing there and few villages en-route. Other than that you can easily do 120-140 on this route. Another mistake I did was to miss the Chakan route at Shikrapur after Shirur and missed the Chakan Shikrapur Road, ended up at the Koregaon toll.
Having missed the Chakan route, thought we will now take a break in our Pune home and carried on into Pune City. Started from Aur at 12:20 pm, reached Nagar Mkt 2:10 pm, 111 km and reached Pune at 4:10 pm 224 km. Bad thing about the route was the traffic of trucks and bikes en-route in the mid-afternoon hours. Later in evening took the Mumbai Pune Expressway, this time adhered completely to 80 kph speed limits staying in the middle lane and reached Mumbai home in 3.5 hrs.

re: Mumbai - Aurangabad : Route Queries

Did a Mumbai-Aurangabad-Mumbai over Monday and Tuesday (16th and 17th April) via Pune - A'Nagar.

Started from Mumbai @ 4:30 am and touched Pune @ 6:15 (165 kms) , reaching Ahmendnagar @ 8:30 (115 kms) and Aurangabad @11:30 am (110 kms). Roads are 4 laned throughout and are in great condition - did not encounter any bad patches. can easily cruise @ 120 - 140 throughout - except for 6-7 stops for paying toll - which also caused a traffic pile up as the vehicles cut lanes and tried to nose into other lanes to get ahead ! never seen people in India being in such a hurry to pay up ! Average speeds dropped in the A-Nagar - Aurangabad stretch due to multiple villages on the way which inevitably leads to motorcycle and other slow-moving traffic and more general narrowing of roads due to riff-raff tuk-tukis and other such contraptions keeping the 'fast-lane" occupied.

return was far better - Started Aurangabad @ 4:00 am in a bid to avoid all the traffic - and reached Mumbai (Powai) in flat 5 h:30 m with a 20 minute break for refreshments. Aurangabad - A'nagar - (1:30), A-nagar - Pune (1:30); Pune - Powai (2:30) - one-way trip was ~ 400 kms on the odo.

the car was a 2003 Baleno - (converted to CNG) - overall mileage was a real surprise (no CNG available after Pune, though LPG is available) - as per my calculations the car seems to have just used about 27 kgs of CNG and 22 liters of Petrol for ~ 920 kms of travel - i.e. fuel cost of rs. 2.75 per k.m. !! (as per my calculations the Baleno is delivering 22 kms per kg of CNG and 15 kms per liter of petrol on average speeds of 70-75 kms per hour)

re: Mumbai - Aurangabad : Route Queries

Can someone advise which route is better to reach Ajantha - via Aurangabad city
or via Khultabad, The latter looks about 20km longer, though if it can avoid
troublesome city traffic thought it might be worthwhile. Please advise.

Route 1 through city
SH 60 to Mtdc Fardapur - Google Maps

Route 2 bypassing city
SH 60 to Mtdc Fardapur - Google Maps

For road conditions, this is the right thread.

For places to see, check travelogues section: my own trip last year covering Ellora caves and Daulatabad fort is here. Hope it helps.
