I stayed there during Jan 2012, off-season rate of Rs.1,645 for the basic room.
Some recently renovated rooms were good, older ones looked bad.
Main advantage for me was, I could park my car right in front of my room :)

manim. The one in the pic is the renovated one? Number 96. If I decide to stay here then I can ask for this.
I have stayed here 3 years back and at that time it was good. I liked the location and open area. + the parking.

Sherlock is my all time favourite.If you are looking for a place out of town bounds,then Red Hills Resort is the ideal place or else Destiny Farmstay.Destiny and Sherlock are run by the same group.Tbhpian Fauji stayed at Red Hills Resort recently.

3 days. Its actually head tonsuring ceremony for my little daughter. As per tradition have to do it on banks of River Ganga. We will all together be 6 people. Willing to stay away also from Har-ki-pauri. Can take some vehicle from hotel to that place if needed.
Well, during a 2 weeks trip to UK (Uttarakhand :) ), we stayed for a night at GMVN, Haridwar.
Its a simpleton hotel near the busstand/ station. Food is nice and good. Rooms are large- be ready to be accommodative with not-so-critical issues. Rate is very cheap- dont remember now.
Check out Hotel Teerth- right on the bank and very close to HKP. But, you cant take your vehicle upto the hotel.
Can anyone please suggest a decent accommodation in Gadag? This is required for 12 days.

We are a group of about 10 friends(all guys) planning to do a trip to Goa around the last week of July 2012.
We are looking for an accommodation which is not very expensive (off season anyways) and is like an independent property, something like a bungalow.
We would prefer something close to the beach (i dont know if asking for something on the beach and budget works)
Any suggestions basis first hand experience ??
Try "Estrela Do Mar Beach Resort". It should be under 2K.
I don't remember if I stayed there a few years ago or was it another place but this one was very near the beach.

You can try the Ezue Bia Guest House, candolim Beach, Goa. Had shortlisted this when I was planning a Goa trip.

4 years back stayed at hotel Sukhsagar,a minute's walk from the beach.
Rs 460 for a large room with TV and running hot and cold water.Car parking

Mr Dominic was the receptionis/manager when I stayed there.
The owners have changed about a couple of years back so would not know about the present.
Have a look.Everything nearby like HDFC/SBI restaurants etc.

The YWCA rooms/furniture is all very very old and antique. Also the windows are not air tight, the geyser does not work sometimes. Basically it is a very old place with it's own charm if you like it. I have stayed there once, yes, the rates are very very nominal, mostly meant for Christian missionaries/travelers, but open to all depending on availability.

Thanks for the update. I did stay there for 3 nights and found the experience very enjoyable. The 4-bedded cottage I got cost me Rs 1080 per day (including taxes), and had a small drawing-cum-dining room at the entrance, equipped with a 20" TV that worked fine.
The room was large and very comfortable. The bathroom was also huge and everything worked in it, including the geyser. Only the geyser timings were 6am to 10 am and 6 pm to 10 pm.
Here's a review of the pros and cons:-
Pros:
- Extremely vfm. Cost was Rs 1080 per day. Check out time is noon. Cost is around 2k in season. No other homestay had a room for 4 persons. At most they were allowing only one extra bed in a double room. And none was cheaper than 2500 a day, which meant 5000 a day for 2 rooms.
- Located in the heart of the city, merely 1.5 kms from the Railway station, and also from Commercial Street. The lake was around 2.5 kms away.
- Has a colonial feeling all over the premises---reminds one of the days of the British Raj.
- Has a good, old-fashioned restaurant that can seat around 30 persons in a huge hall with round, old-fashioned teak furniture.
- Food is decent, especially breakfast. A set of 2 dosas cost only Rs 35, and the sambar and chutney were delicious. However a butter toast sandwich was Rs 50. Noodles for dinner were a bit bland however. A coffee mug for Rs 30 was enough for 4 of us.
- One can park one's car right opposite the cottage.
- 4 towels and soaps were supplied free of charge.
- The reception is manned by very competent and polite personnel.
- They are very prompt in responding to email queries for accommodation--all my queries were answered on the same day.
- They have free wi-fi in the hall adjoining the dining hall.
- All rooms and cottages were freshly painted.
Cons:
- It is not on an elevated place with clouds passing by, nor does it offer great views. It is only on the slope of a small hill. The 4-bedded cottage is quite near to the entrance, and therefore not evelvated from the road level.
- The telephone in the cottage had conked out, and I was told it would take a few days to get the wiring changed.
- Don't expect room service as the main building is not too near, and is on the apex of a steep slope.
- Dinner sometimes has to be ordered in advance, when there are too many people, or also when there are too few residents.
