i personally was thinking of doing the same over Christmas weekend - but not worth the long drive with so little time to relax & cover Panna,Khajuraho & Orccha - I leave tonight by train - reach Jhansi tomm morning - I have full 4 days to cover these 3 places - I also can drop Orccha in case the schedule becomes too tight( it can be done at a seperate weekend through a overnight train) - my train back to Delhi is on Sun evening

There are 2 waterfalls around Panna, the Ken Gharial Sanctuary & a private diamond mine to cover as well - apart from Khajuraho - so have my schedule full

Butt...havent booked any hotel - me & wife hope to travel around the old fashioned backpacking way - looking for cheapo hotels or dorms...hope it isnt too crowded...

Delhi-Khajuraho (30th Nov-5th Dec 2009)

Hi Guys!

I am planning on doing the same trip at the end of Nov.

Here's my plan:
30th Nov- Gurgaon - Khajuraho (via Agra,Gwalior,Jhansi) ( Leave 0400 - Reach Khajuraho by 1800 hrs)
1st Dec- at Khajuraho
2nd Dec- Khajruaho-Jhansi (Vist Orcha etc) (Leave Khajuraho 0530 hrs - at Jhansi by 2030 hrs after sightseeing at Gwalior) - Stay the night at Jhansi
3rd Dec - Jhansi-Gwalior (Visit fort etc) - Head on to Agra (Leave early from Jhansi - stop over at Gwalior and then Target Agra by 1700-1800 hrs)
4th Dec- at Agra
5th Dec- Agra-Gurgaon

I have gone through this thread and the other one http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...a-delhi-2.html but the replies are about a year old... Anybody done this route recently?

How is the road after Agra? and how bad is Jhansi-Khajuraho strech?
I will be going in a 2004 Alto.

Also, I had heard about MP highways being unsafe (dacoits and stuff ) ...i wont be doing any night driving so i guess it should be okay?
How are the facilities along the highway ? - I read some travelogues and its seems they're non-existent for most part of the journey.

Please advise! Any siggestions to hotels at Agra/Jhansi/Khajuraho also welcome

Thanks!

Yellow board permits required for travelling to Delhi from Gwalior

Hi guys... I am planning on driving down in a yellow board Innova from Gwalior to Delhi and back. Will be in Delhi for about 3 days. Planning to take the following route. Do let me know how the roads are and also if thats the easiest way to the Delhi Airport.

Gwalior - Morena - Dholpur - Agra - Mathura - Hodal - Aurangabad - Gurgaon - Delhi

Any suggestions on an alternate route is welcome. I am planning to take a self drive so any idea where all I will need to get the permits from and how much they will be?

We will be 6 of us. I am guessing the first permit will have to be taken at Dholpur for Rajasthan. Can I also get a permit for UP at Dholpur? and then at Hodal for Haryana. Please correct me if I am wrong. What about Delhi? Where is this permit issued?

And do I need to take the permit based on no. of people and no. of days or will it be based on kms? Can I also get a 2-way permit? The car that I am taking has only MP permit!

Which is the best possible route to take from Delhi/Noida to Jhansi?
I have heard that some of the roads are pretty bad.

Delhi-Agra is excellent via the Yamuna Expressway and Agra to Gwalior is decent but with quite some amount of traffic. Gwalior-Jhansi stretch is under construction for most of its 100km length but is used by all vehicles at all times of the year. With a little bit of cautious and patient driving, you can easily reach Jhansi from Gwalior in around 3hrs.

Thanks for the info.
Is there any other route from Gwalior/Noida to Jhansi? 100KM in 3 hours seems to be tiring.

There are routes through villages but they are too complex and for all you know a couple might get jammed due to a broken down bullock cart or a local celebration somewhere. No point.

Hi ank.nsit

well i may be in the best position to answer your question as my hometown is Jhansi and i stay in Noida

I did two road trips to my Hometown Jhansi- 1st in Aug on my Birthday and the second during Diwali in Nov.

Total distance is 450 kms by road.

Noida to Agra via Yamuna Expressway-2 Hrs (195 kms)

Crossing Agra will take anything between 20 mins if you enter before 7am to 50 mins during Rush Hours.

Agra to Gwalior- 125 Kms - 90mins

Excellent 4 lane Highway. Two toll booths where you will have to pay Rs 25 each.

Please ensure that you take Gwalior -Jhansi Bypass which will come 10kms before entering Gwalior City. you will have to take left to enter bypass. Usually Cops are posted at this diversion point.

This road is an absolute blast to drive with no traffic on it. after driving for 20 kms, you will have to pay Rs 60 on a toll booth .

Gwalior to Jhansi-120 Kms

This stretch will take anything between 3 to 3.5 hrs depending upon your patience and driving Skills.

Two major Bottlenecks are passing through Dabra and Datia towns.

Crossing Dabra which is a 7-8 kms stretch may take 45 mins. Drive with extreme caution as this stretch is full of Huge craters and there is hardly any tarmac! You will have to face clouds of dust on this stretch.

Datia to Jhansi a 28 km stretch too is a nightmare with continuous driving on loose Gravel , craters and broken tarmac. Please exercise extreme caution on this stetch.

In short dont expect to Complete Noida-Jhansi stretch in less than 8 hrs.

re: Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Jhansi-Orchha-Khajuraho : Route Queries

Hi Guys,

My final plan is to travel directly from Faridabad to Khajuraho & on the way back I need to stay in Jhansi for my friend's marriage.

So for going to Khajuraho, the google maps shows this route :

Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Jhansi-Orchha-Khajuraho : Route Queries-route1.jpg

Is this route ok to take? Or should I take alternate route from Gwalior/Jhansi?

Hi,

Yea, I did take this route & the roads till ghatampur were really good, but after the right turn from Ghatampur the road(if I could call it that) dint exist. The major stretch is still under construction, so do not take this route AT ANY COST.

While going to Khajuraho I went through this route & when coming back I had to visit Jhansi, so took khajuraho jhansi road & then shivpuri, gwalior & via taj expressway I reached delhi.

You basically have two options :

1. Take the route shown in google maps & take a right turn before ghatampur towards Jhansi & then take the Jhansi Khajuraho road. The NH2 is all 4 lane highway with scarce traffic so it was a breeze to drive through. Also, in this route the Agra city does not need to be crossed.

2. Or you can take Agra,Gwalior,Shivpuri,Jhansi & then Khajuraho road.
Here the Agra-Gwalior-Shivpuri stretch is good to average. Gwalior-Shivpuri road is generally good but will have a few bad stretches appearing out of no where . Shivpuri-Jhansi is awesome toll road, with car doing more than 120kmph on the whole stretch. You will have to cross agra city in this option.

Jhansi Khajuraho road which you will have to cross in both cases is a 2 lane single road with car doing an average speeds of around 70kmph.

Gwalior-Jhansi road is basically non existent so you should not consider that to be a road, just like ghatampur-khajuraho stretch.

Hope it helps.

re: Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Jhansi-Orchha-Khajuraho : Route Queries

Thanks so much for super quick reply. I stay in South delhi and would like to take Yamaha expressway. Also I am planning g to start at 4am to avoid city traffic of agra.

Now with this combination which route would you suggest. Ghatampur KHAJURAHO via Jhansi or agra Gwalior shivpuri Jhansi KHAJURAHO route.
I did Khajuraho Delhi in 10 hours way back in 2005 with just one stop of 15 Min in Mathura.

With better roads now I intend to do this in 8hours.

Your guidance would really help me in avoiding unnecessary roads.

Thanks.
