Bangalore - Badami : Route Queries

Please help me to plan my route to Badami from Bangalore. I can see possible three alternatives -
a) Bangalore - Chitradurga (NH4) - Hospet - Kushtagi (NH13) - Gajendranagar (SH30) - Badami
b) Bangalore - Chitradurga (NH4) - Hospet (NH 13) - Left on to NH63, Before Gadag right (Didn't get the name of the place from the map) - Ron - Badami
c) Bangalore - Chitradurga - Hubli (NH4) - Nargund - Badami
Please let me know the road conditions and approx travel time.

Planning to do Bangalore - Badami - Aihole - Pattadkal - Hampi - Bangalore on 24th to 27th January.

Thanks in advance,
Arindam

P.S. I have gone through the posts, but most of them has Badami as second destination (after Hampi or other places of Coastal Karnataka), which tilted the route preference.

My pick would be via hubli which is option c). It might be long route but trusted one! Bangalore - Hubli except for few known diversions and road cuts its good route. Other routes have lot of bad patches so its difficult to trust unless someone have travelled recently.

Regards,

Ravi.

Arindam,

Any specific reason for choosing to do Badami before Hampi ?

I did this circuit in December, and here's my route input:

"Bangalore to Chitradurga road condition is pretty good, and you can average 100+kph.

about 30kms after chitradurga towards hospet is bad with a lot of potholes and broken road surfaces. Thereafter roads are pretty good till about 20kms before Hospet, where you start to see the lines of mining trucks lined up. "

Hospet to Badami, the road is a single carriageway, and a mix of good and excellent roads. NH13 is ok and not so great. Once you turn off NH13, the roads are excellent.

You should be able to do Aihole, Pattadkal, Badami in 1 day. Badami is about 2hrs or sightseeing, Aihole and Pattadkal will take another 4hrs.

You can read about my trip in the travelouges section 'A ride back to 400AD - Travel to hampi'.

If you are going in your safari, the roads should not bother you so much.

cheers
Srini

In all my long travels, I felt that the way back is boring. In the onward journey, the excitement pulls you. So I thought, I will do the long journey onwards, and comparatively shorte journey towards return.

And if possible I will visit Chitradurga Fort on the way back

Anand, I did this trip last month,
The route taken was:
Bangalore - Tumkur - Chitradurga - Davangere - Hubli - Nargund - Navalgund - Badami.
The road till Hubli can be easily covered under 5 hrs, from Hubli, the road is not so bad till about 20kms from Badami, but not undoable.
Best bet if you are staying in JP nagar is to take the NICE road till Tumkur road and proceed.

My travelogue of the trip is:

The road via Nargund is the Best option if you are planning only Badami. Don't even try to go via Hospet via NH 13 which is a misery.

Hampi - Bellary: Bad but manageable.
Bellay - Hiriyur : Awesome state highway.
Hiriyur - BLR: NH4.

Avoid NH13 like the plague.

re: Bangalore - Badami : Route Queries

BLR(residence on Kanakpura rd)-Dharwad (440km) in 5.5 hours, Dharwad-Badami (110km) in 3 hours
Watch out for the maniacal (infamous) speed breakers (more of car breakers, really) @ 24 km and 31 km after Chitradurga after a wonderful stretch of straight smooth roads. They are quite invisible, my friend's Safari got wreaked at 140kmph on those. I waited for them, hence got saved.
Badami-Dharwad (3hours) Dharwad-BLR (residence) - 5h15min
On return journey, the humps are better visible.

Experience: Roads were smooth all through. Badami-Pattadakal 10km bumpy but OK roads.

re: Bangalore - Badami : Route Queries

Hi Guys I am planning to drive down to Badami and Hampi next weekend and following is my travel plan which is finalized:

11 Aug 2012- Start from Bangalore early in the morning (around 4:30 AM) and reach Badami in the afternoon. We have already booked a resort in Badami for afternoon check-in. Site-Seeing in and around Badami until evening

12 Aug 2012 - Check-out from the resort, continue siteseeing in Badami proceed to Aihole and Pataddakal, site-seeing until evening and drive down to Hospet the same evening. Check-in in a hotel at Hospet in the night.

13 Aug 2012 - Site seeing in Hampi - Full day

14 Aug 2012 - Check out from the hotel at Hospet continue site-seeing in Hampi until afternoon or evening and then finally drive down to Chitradurga and reach in the night. Check-in at Chitradurga at night.

15 Aug 2012 Check out from Chitradurga hotel. Site-seeing in and around Chitradurga. Drive back to Bangalore

Based on the above can someone please suggest me best route from Bangalore to Badami. Recent road conditions? shorter route? Total distance? I want to bypass Hubli completely.

I cant change the order at which i am traveling since i have already advance booked the hotels at different places. So i have to drive from Bangalore - Badami - Hospet - Hampi - Chitradurga - Bangalore - No changes possible in this!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

re: Bangalore - Badami : Route Queries

Planning of a Bangalore - Badami- Pattadakal - Aihole - Hampi trip in Aug mid. The duration of trip will be 3 days which due to work related constraints can not be increased.
Tentative plan as follows -
Day 1 -
Start from Bangalore at 4.30 AM
Cross Hubli at 09.30 AM
Take NH 218 Navalgund - Nargund - to reach Badami - 12:30 PM
Lunch break and Badami sightseeing till 03:30 PM
Finish off Pattadakkal and Aihole by around 6 PM (Before it gets dark/ Entry closes) and start to Hospet.

Concerns :
- Is it possible to reach Badami earlier than my planned time of 12:30 PM after a 04:30 AM start from Bangalore.
- How long will the Badami - Pattadakal - Aihole circut take including sight seeing.
- How good is condition of NH 13 from Aihole - Hospet, I am aware it is a two lane highway, apart from the same road quality and safety wise please let know.

Day 2-
Hampi Sight seeing.
Also heard about night seeing of the ruins, anyone here who has gone for the same? I was thinking of covering as much as possible on Day 2 and then taking the night sight seeing also.

Day 3 - Anegundi, Anjanadri Hill visit in morning. Return to Hospet have lunch checkout and start back to Bangalore.
Reach Bangalore by around 8PM.

Iam concerned about the Day 1 since the total distance to be covered is around 700 KM and almost 300 of those are on two lane highways meaning time taken will be more. Also this way I will not be able to visit Tungabhadra dam. Since the trip duration can not be increased from 3 days I guess there is no option for the same.

Please let know if this will be feasible.

Road conditions have changed though, but from a planning point of view perfect.

Thanks ampere, yes I was going through lukeskywalkers thread before. Actually I got the idea of doing Badami first and then going to Hampi from his thread. My concern was condition of NH 13 between Aihole and Hospet since as per plan I will be driving that road after dark and ride is an Alto.
Also, day 1 route is around 700 KMS combined, I wanted to finish Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal before it gets dark and start to Hospet. I was not sure about the feasablity of the same.
