Muvattupuzha-Vailankanni Trip Completed Successfully.

Trip was done on last 19th(Friday) and Reached on Sunday Early Morning.
We Went through this Route:
Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha-Erattupetta-Kanjirappally(NH220)-Mundakkayam-Vandiperiyar-Kumaly-Lower Camp-Kambam-Theni-Madurai-Melur-Pudukottai-Thanjavur-Needamangalam-Velankanni.

All Over This Route is Preferable and the roads are in good condition except for few stretches in Highranges(after Kumaly to Gudallur) and after Melur.
But ,We were caught in Madhurai City Traffic and our Noon Meals session took away almost 1.5 hours in Madhurai City.Total Kms from Muvattupuzha is 550kms via this Route to Velankanni(possibly lesser if a Bypass exists in Madhurai).

While Returning from Velankanni on 20th Feb Saturday Afternoon ,Took the Standard Route - Velankanni-Thanjavur-Trichy-Dindigul-Pazhani-Pollachi-Palakkad-Mannoothy-Chalakudy-Muvattupuzha.Bypass works in Trichy(Tiruchirapally) is going on full swing and it is literally a Hell ,confusing deviation,Bad Roads in between and almost another 1-1.5 hours around the City to Connect to Dindigul Highway around many junctions and Semi-Built Overbridges .Palakkad-Thrissur NH47 was insane as usual in the Night.

BTW ,While Returning,Took a long route from Velankanni via "Thiruthirepondi" and total kms account for almost 590kms.

I Will Recommend the Route through Kumaly(NH220) to Kambam-Theni or in Day Time > Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha-Kulamavu(Wildlife zone)-Idukky-Kambam Medu-Kambam-Theni-(Same as first route).

Thanks Especially to @hvk sir for the Guidance.

PLUS I have one more problem, whenever we try to bypass Madurai, I have not seen any good place to eat. One has to get into the city. Any options on NH45/NH45B/NH7/NH220?

Hi all,

My family is planning for a quick visit to Velankanni next week. What is the fast, safe and good road to Velankanni from Kochi? any updates on recent road conditions?

Thanks,

From theni it would be better to take NH 46 to periyakulam, batlagundu ,dindugul , trichy and then take NH 67 to thanjavur, nidamangalam, thiruvarur upto nagapattinam and then on towards velankanni.
You will probably end up doing 30kms more if you go through madurai, pudukkottai.

@coolclouds:I will recommend above route(via Kumily).hoping it is OK for who ever driving to bear with some kms in the Highranges in NH220 (<30-40kms).kilometers will come around 590 from Kochi. Can do in 10 hours. The Regular Route(Via NH47) is congested and some works are going on in Trichy region which will delay.Driving Strain too will be More.
I will prefer Theni-Madhura-Melur-Pudukottai route as HVK Sir Mentioned elsewhere in this thread.Roads are Good.

@deepclutch: Kochi to Theni via Munnar-Devikulam or Kottayam-Kumili is better?

Difficult to say. You have 3 route choices, via Munnar/Bodimedu, Idukki/Kumili and Thodupuzha/Kanjirapalli. I don't think you need to go all the way to Kottayam to get to the KK Road, may be easier to join it via Thodupuzha and Palai.

You can connect to NH220 towards Kumily via Kochi-Thalayolaparambu-Pala-Kanjirappally(NH220)

Thank you!

I know the route to Kattappana via Palai-Erattupetta-Vagamon. Is it the same route to Theni? or any diversion?

No need to go to Vagamon. You reach the KK Road at Kanjirapalli.

Thanks HVK. So the route would be Kochi-Palai-Kanjirappalli-Kumili-Theni
I guess this stretch is safe for night driving.

Me and wife did this Velankanni trip. I couldn't follow the route mentioned above as we had to start from Angamaly.

We started from Angamaly at 10.30pm on last Friday via Pollachi-Dindigul-Trichy-Thanjavur and reached Velankanni at 7.15am. Refreshed, went to church and returned at 11am via Trichy-Karur-Coimbatore (Had a small work at Coimbatore)-Palghat and finally reached Kochi at 10pm

The road between Trichy to Karur was worse.

hi all

I am planning a trip to Velankanni from Bharananganam near Pala, Kerala - in May third week. Plan to leave Bharananganam by 11:30 AM. The route suggested here seems to be Pala, Theni-Madhura-Melur-Pudukottai-Thanjavur. Is it possible to reach Velankanni in 8 hours ? And how are the road conditions and also is the route family friendly? I do not wish to drive during night (family trip) and so which place would be ideal for a night halt. Request veterans to help out.
Regards and Thanks
Thomas.
