Spike, I do not know if you can extend your budget further, but since you say guests from abroad, try places on ECR like Fisherman's Cove etc.
They will surely be thrilled.

At 7K,my reccomendation would be The Raintree,Anna Salai.Excellent place & outstanding service. Its a part of the Ceebros Group who are big time real estate guys in Chennai in the premium & luxury segment.

Chennai India Five Star Hotel near Airport - The Raintree Hotel

Will try next time, almost done with bookings. Actually, I was supposed to suggest good hotels at this price range, from the list they selected Taj Vivanta.

Courtyard was coming around 8K. There were restrictions on cancellation.

Thank you Ranjit, raintree has been recommended by many people. It was coming close to 8.4K, finally my guests have selected Taj Vivanta for ~ 8K. BTW, Hyatt was offering rooms at a rate of 5.6K (starting price), provided the bookings dates are not changed later and no refund on cancellation of bookings, all payment to be done upfront.

A funny incident happened when I called up Radisson GRT. Incidentally, the Single and Double occupancy rooms have the same rate, so I thought of asking why is it so.

Me- Why are your Single and Double occupancy rooms priced similarly?
She- Yes Sir, it is like that.
Me- But why? If both cost the same, won't people always take a DO room? Then why this extra SO room?
She- No Sir, that SO room is for single people only.
Me- Oh is it?
She- Yes Sir.
Me- Thanks!

re: Good hotels in Chennai

Greetings folks,

Which are good places to stay for 1 to 1.5K with VAT/LT and all other taxes? With car parking?
I want to attend some Kutcheri concerts this season for 3 nights at a time twice or thrice. Hence want to keep it cheap.

I would reccomend New Woodlands in the range you are looking for and is centrally located to most of the kutcheri sabhas that usually occur in the city.http://www.newwoodlands.com/. No frills hotel, dont expect anything fancy, just a place to sleep and eat good food.

Then you have the ancient Maris Hotel,i dont think they have done anything to that hotel in all these many years.Good again if its just to crash for the night or a visa stamping at the US Consulate.

If its towards the airport, tambaram side, then Henkala Hotel is good in the range.

Then you have the budget chain Ginger, which is very basic.

Could be Conemara as well right? All the Taj hotels have been rebranded and regrouped into the Gateway brand & Vivanta brand.

re: Good hotels in Chennai

You may check these too..
1. Quality Inn
2. Savera
3. Vestin Park, Egmore (about 3K)
4. Park Plaza
5. Checkers

Edit: last time tripadvisor.in listed "Malles Manotaa Service Apartment" in their top list but the room was tiny and had to shift to another.

Yes, the Fisherman's Cove is being re-branded as Vivanta. So sad :-( ... I like the 'Fisherman's Cove' name.

The beach-front sea-food-speciality restaurant is a must-try.

re: Good hotels in Chennai

Travelled to Chennai last week to attend the Alumni re-union. Stayed at two hotels since did not get two nights stay at the first one.

First one was Ginger Hotels in IITM Research Park, Thiruvanmiyur, Adayar. Chose this for its proximity to the campus. It's adjacent to Tidel Park, Ramanujan IT City, etc. It's a decent place. Small rooms. We had difficulty in accommodating all of us (two adults and two children below 12 years) in the room. They have a food court in the basement. Rate was 1.5+taxes. Per night total cost was around 2K. Excellent economy place for people who travel on business to one of the tech parks nearby.

Second night stay was at Keys Katti-Ma on Kalakshetra Road, Besant Nagar. Pretty spacious rooms. probably little hard to find. Complimentary breakfast. Service at the restaurant was not very impressive though. Rate was 4.5K+taxes. Cost per night was around 6K.

Regards

Rki,

It will be difficult to find a decent accommodation around Ambattur. Suggest you stay around Koyambedu.

Please check in Cleartrip & filter for location Koyembedu or Anna Nagar These hotels have good ratings in Tripadvisor also.

P.S : I have not personally stayed in any of these hotels.
