Yes, thats the best time to visit Jog Falls. Linganmakki dam will be almost full by then and the water will be released in excess.
SH55 can you please elaborate on the road. Any interior road in Malnad region during monsoon is best avoided, due to patch roads and and also too many tree fall.
I would prefer, Jog - Honnavar - Murudeshwar road, this was in beautiful condition sometime back and it's also a National Highway

Thanks Sushruta.
Looks like the trip might be preponed to 7th July. Would you still suggest it as a good time to visit?

Thanks,
JP

Re: Blr-Shimoga-Jog Falls-Kollur-Udipi-D'sthala-Blr

Hi,

I need to travel (in my bullet), from Sirsi to Udupi. Looking at Google Maps, I got the following routes:

1. Sirsi-Kargal-Bhatkal-Udupi (BHPian SAPVEN recently took this route and says its good)
2. Sirsi-Sagar-Sigandur-Udupi (Whats the frequency of Barge?)
3. Sirsi-Sagar-Hosanagara-Hulikal-Udupi

Given that this is a fun ride and in my bullet, I'd like to take the road which is the most scenic and fun to ride. What'd be your recommendation?

Thanks

Prasad

Both 1 & 2 are good.
If i were to choose, I would choose route via Sigandhur, it's very scenic indeed.
Barge frequency is almost 1 every half an hour, it also depends on the occupancy of passengers & vehicles getting full.

Thanks Sushrutha.

One more question. Which is the better route to reach Kundapura/Udupi from Kollur. I see the following 3 options in Google maps:

1. Kollur-Tallur-Kundapura
2. Kollur-Golihole-Baindoor-Kundapura
3. Kollur-Golihole-Kambadakone-Kundapura

Which is better route?

Prasad

I have taken route 2. Haven't tried 1 & 3. Route 1 is Shortest.
Take Route 2, coz it's a bit scenic & even Maravanthe is on the way.

The Jog falls route can be as below.

Bangalore - Tumkur - Tiptur - Arasikere - Tarikere - Bhadravati - Shimoga - Sagara - Talaguppa - Jogfalls

Road condition

Bangalore - Shimoga - Decent to excellent 2 lane roads.

Shimoga - Sagara - Decent with a few rough patches

Sagara - Talaguppa - Jog Falls - Average with quite a few potholes and rough patches

Thanks a lot for the update nkrishnap.

Plan is to start from B'lore this Saturday morning (29th Dec 2012).
Cover few places around Shimoga and night halt there.
Next day (30th Dec 2012), Jog falls and then to Gokarna. Halt @ Gokarna for 30th & 31st Dec 2012. New year partying there

Any help on road conditions from Jog falls to Gokarna and sight seeing places in & around shimoga/gokarna would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any suggestions on budget hotels/homestays (5 bachelors) around shimoga & gokarna would be of great help

Thanks in advance

If the plan is to start on Saturday ensure you start early to miss most of the traffic around Tumkur and the drive will be peaceful without too many obstacles on the 2 lane highway.

The road condition to Gokarna is dependent on the road you take.

Say for example if you plan to visit Lewington (Unchalli) Falls and Sirimane Falls then you will have to drive from Jog to Siddapur and deviate towards Unchalli falls and then back to Sirsi highway and head towards Kumta.

The roads are decent at some places and average at most places.

Note: The Sirsi - Kumta highway is undergoing widening with concrete work going on at few places. So single lane driving for a few kms in the Devimane Ghats.

Do let me know if you need any more info on the same.

Thanks for the help nkrishnap. That was real quick

I am planning to start by 5 AM on saturday (hopefully), guess can beat the traffic.

I will try to cover both the falls while going to Gokarna.
So, just to confirm: I have to take 'Jog falls - Siddapur - Unchalli falls (deviate from highway) - Kumta - Gokarna' to reach gokarna.

I am not able to locate Sirimane falls near Jog falls/Unchalli falls. The one I got in Google maps is located near Sringeri (70 Kms from Jog).
Could you please let me know the exact location and the way?

Oops my bad, its not Sirimane falls, its Bennehole Falls. Sorry about the mistake. Early morning blues

I would prefer a 4 AM start, but 5 AM is not bad either.

ok Thanks again nkrishnap.

So, here's the link http://goo.gl/maps/4947W (marked as 'B' is the deviation to Unhalli Falls, 'C' as Bennehole falls) for the route. Could you please confirm if this is the route you have suggested? I take its in decent condition as per your post.

Yes these are the places. However, the unmarked road, I am not too sure of the road condition. The Benne hole falls is more towards the Sirsi town.

So watchout for an old road signboard for the Bennehole (which is around 7 kms from the main road. It will be difficult to take the car all the way till the falls.
