Bangalore to Bhopal (Oct'10) - Which route ?

Hi Friends,

I am planning for Bangalore - Bhopal drive in Oct (3rd/4th week).

Mostly travelling alone (Ritz Vxi) & no night driving (Will drive any day only from 3 AM to 9 PM max.)

Possible Routes:

1) Bangalore - Hydbad - Nagpur - Betul - Itarsi - Bhopal
  • Bangalore - Nagpur roads are fine. (Except 50-60 Kms around Maha border)
  • Possible to do BNG - NGP in 17-18 hours (with or without break at Hyd)
  • Roads from Betul - Bhopal are bad.
2) Bangalore - Pune - Nashik - Dhule - Indore - Bhopal
  • Bangalore - Pune roads are good / excellent
  • Break journey at Pune / Nashik
  • No idea about Pune - Indore Road condition
3) Bangalore - Pune - A'Nagar - Aurangabad - Barhanpur - Khandwa - Indore - Bhopal
  • No idea about roads from A'nagar onwards.
Suggestions required :-
  • Best Route ? (Shortest Time)
  • Expected travel time (Aprox). ?
  • Any hotels on way (For stay / food) ?

Best route is via Indore.
Ideal break is either Pune or Nashik.
Road conditions are good.

Kumar Sir - options (2) and (3) both are via Indore. Which one would you recommend?

For the sake of options - let me add one more route, though I am not sure myself about it!

Bangalore-Solapur-Aurangabad-Bhopal
I am not sure about Bangalore-Solapur, but you have many good options for Aurangabad-Indore (Via Dhule-Indore, Via Khandwa-Indore, Via Khandwa-Hoshangabad).

Between Solpaur-Indore, you have 3 major temples - Tuljapur, Grishneshwar, Onkareshwar.

Regards

Dont think going anywhere near Solapur is a good idea at the moment, all the roads in the vicinity are in pretty bad shape, and you would lose time, plus good stay options are also limited in this circuit.

Agree with Ranjit, NH13 to Solapur from Chitradurga onwards is bad news.
Nowadays, NH3 is in good condition because it is 4-laned from Nashik to Dhulia and from the MP border (almost complete) all the way to Bhopal via Indore & Dewas. Therefore, I would prefer that to the one via Burhanpur and Khandwa, although that is not a bad route.

Thanks for all the responses

Well, so I can finalize on Bangalore - Pune - Nashik - Dhule - Indore - Bhopal route.

Now,

1) How do I bypass Pune & Nashik ?
2) Expected duration ? (BNG - PNE : 11 hrs & PNE - BPL : 11 hrs) ?
3) Total distance is 1637 Kms ? (is it correct ?)

Pune does not a bypass for NH50. So, if you want to drive from NH4 (Bangalore highway) to NH50 (Nashik highway), you have to go through Pune city which may be confusing for first-timers and those unfamiliar with the city. Plus, traffic jams to contend with.

I have a simple solution, which is unfortunately much longer but may not take longer time, which is to take the NH4 Pune bypass towards Bombay till its very end (but do not take the expressway to Bombay). Continue on NH4 via Dehu Road till Talegaon, where you turn right and take the excellent toll road from Talegaon to Chakan where you can join NH50 to Nashik. Rute is simple, there is no confusion and traffic is not a worry.

Nashik too has no bypass when you are coming from Pune on NH5, but routing is simple. You reach Ashoka Circle (NH3-NH50 intersection) in Nashik (after crossing Nashik Road railway station), where you turn right to Dhulia. Again, no confusion, and since you do not really enter Nashik city proper, not a serious traffic issue.

Dhulia has a bypass though.

Indore too has a bypass which you take, takes you directly to Dewas and the Bhopal highway.

Rahul, timings are a bit aggressive, assuming breaks, I would assume Bangalore-Pune to be 12-14 hours, and Pune-Bhopal to be at least 15 hours.

Yes - Pune - BHopal can not be done in 11 hours. Even a very fast driver would take min of 15 hours.

Route finalized. Thanks !

Dear HVK,

Thanks for the detailed route.
If I am taking a halt @ Pune, then I will be staying near Chandni Chowk at relative's place. If, I go ahead & take a halt at Nashik, I will stay somewhere on NH5 / around city.

So, the route works for me.

1) I am lit'l bit familier with Pune city - assuming that I start early (5am) from Pune next day, should I take the same route given by you or any alternative route through the city ?
2) Any suggestion on hotels around Nashik, just for a quick nap ?

Naren,

I was not sure about time / duration, so let it take 12-15 hours; No Problem.
Thanks !

If you start from Pun early, you can easily whiz through the city itself instead of taking the long roundabout route.

Take the Paud Road from Chandini Chowk towards Khadki (Pune-Pimpri road), where you connect with NH50. Route through the city is very simple.

In Nashik, at the Asoka Circle (where NH50 intersects NH3), you will fin Hotel Asoka, which is a nice budget hotel. You do not have to go anywhere inside the city. More hotels, if you turn left (at the Circle) towards Bombay, within 2-3 kms.
