Thanks. I've driven Bantwal-Mani several times before and I'm aware of the local conditions. Kalladka-Bantwal is only about 6 km which I'll survive. Just wanted a hint on which route to take from Bantwal to join NH 66 north of Mangalore city.

I feel, rather than these interior routes, the highway routing of Bantwal(BC Road) > Padil > Nantoor Junction > Suratkal would be faster and better. It's 4 lanes, all the way.

Yes. This has been our default route from Manipal to Hebbal. Back seat passengers never will complain on this route.

Add STRR detour where we don't even have to go through Nelamangala flyover surprise jam or mess at goraguntepalya area.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Travelled to Subrahmanya - Dharmasthala this Sunday and, while returning, took the Shiradi Ghat. Below is a video that shows the condition of the NH-75. The stretch between Donigal and Gundya is pretty bad (The video below is from this stretch). Low GC cars may find it difficult to navigate. Also, BOF SUVs would make you feel uncomfortable as the passengers in my Scorpio N were being tossed around on this road.

However, the ghat section itself is very good, and the stretch between Sakleshpura and Hassan (including the Sakleshpura bypass) is bliss!

While cruising on the Sakleshpura bypass, a truck that was parked on the side (maybe due to an accident, as there were a lot of people on the spot) decided to merge into the highway and take the fast lane right away. Luckily, I was able to break on time as I was maintaining a safe distance with the Polo in front of me. Also, nobody was tailgating me, so lucky me!

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just did a quick 2 day trip to Udupi from Bangalore.

Onwards, took Hassan-Belur-Mudigere-Belthangady-Karkala-Udupi via Charmady ghat. It was good driving except for some small stretches in the plains. The only issue with Charmady is that the roads are narrow, and you can get stuck behind a truck for quite a bit. Took us under 10 hours wiht multiple breaks. This was my first time on Charmady, and I would definitely prefer that to the horrible Shiradi stretch.

Return we decided to take the longer Mysore route - Udupi-Mangalore-Mudipu-Vitla-Puttur-Sullia-Madikeri-Mysore Expressway to Bangalore as someone else had suggested. Its longer by over an hour, but excellent roads. Took us 10 hours with one or two breaks. It was also raining and couldn't do more than 70/80 in the last few stretches. The drive was also beautiful.

So I ended up taking Kalladka-Bantwal (BC Road)-Bajpe-Kateel-Kinnigoli-Mulki. Lovely twisty roads but a bit crowded. Still, I think preferable than going through Nanthoor junction or Kuloor bridge.

Kalladka-Bantwal didn't trouble me that much. Probably because (a) I traversed at around 1-1.30 PM when traffic was light, and (b) large sections of the new road between these two points are thrown open to traffic now. In fact, after I exited Kalladka town limits I think it was new carriageway all the way till BC Road.

Also returned to Bangalore yesterday via Dharmasthala and Shirady. A couple of brief updates:

1. NH 75 between Kowkradi (which seems to be the name of the village where the road coming from Dharmasthala merges with NH 75) and Gundya is at least one carriageway complete, more or less. I could manage this 18 km stretch in less than 20 minutes.

2. The Shirady ghat ascend - it is 35 km from Gundya to Sakaleshpura bypass starting point. Of these 35 km: (a) first 24 km is good quality concrete road that you can breeze through, (b) of the next 11 km, first 7 km or so is terrible. It starts off bad and then as you climb up, becomes progressively worse. (c) The next 4 km, is on-off new and bad. In fact, the couple of blind L-bends just before the Mudigere road breaks off have been straightened and opened - which is a good thing.

In summary - if you can survive about 10 km of bad roads (how bad - there are dashcam grabs elsewhere on this thread itself), then Shirady ought to be your choice at least towards Udupi.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I travelled from Udupi to Bangalore via Karkala-GVKere-Uppinanagady-Shiradi on Wednesday. Uppinanagady to Dharmastala has some major construction streches. Udupi to Hebbal junction took 7.5h including two breaks for lunch and snacks. The next few kms took 70 minutes.

Here is how my car looked when parked at Mayura that evening.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am planning a car trip from bangalore to udupi/mangalore. Travelling with 1 yo kid with family , time is not of essence more of leisure trip.

I dont know how to sequence it , but all routes are repeating when I tried with g maps.

could you share good route for this entire trip and would this be feasible to do in safe and comfortable roads in 3 days? I can extend a day if needed

(hebbal)bangalore
-->
kukke, dharmasthala, udupi krishna temple - local beaches ,mirdeshwar, kollur --> return to bangalore

I am thinking like:

Day1 : start to kukke from bglore, reach by afternoon - head to dharmasthala - continue to udupi for stay

Day2: do local sightseeings & krishna temple - head to mirdeshwar and stay

Day3: goto kollur temple and return to bangalore

this Day 2 & day 3 trips are kind of circling back again or should I do the entire trip vice versa - start to mirdeshwar from bangalore and end with kukke temple?

sorry , this is my first comment. please be kind

P.S.-
My car is renault kiger NA - if it has to do with GC its about 205mm

From Kollur to Bangalore you don't have to return to NH 66. You can exit on the other side of the temple (take a sharp left turn in front of the temple and loop around the parking lot) towards the town of Nagara and from there to Thirthahalli, joining the Udupi-Shimoga NH. From here you have multiple options; I prefer Thirthahalli > Lakkavalli > Tarikere > Hosadurga eventually joining NH 4 at Hiriyur.

Note that there's a paucity of refuelling options around Kollur. Best to tank up before exiting NH 66 or missing that, at the pump at the junction about 5-6 km shy of Kollur. The next one I think is only at Nagara.

Just put the intermediate towns I mentioned into Google Maps... it isn't tough to do.

I think each temple you plan to visit requires about 2-3 hours on average for the visit itself (ie, parking to parking), even with the VIP tickets. Driving time more or less matches the estimate of Google (but give buffer time if you are travelling with kids/elderly etc.).

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hello Guys, did a Blore -Mlore-Udp-Blore trip.
Took shirady while going to Mlore and the 10 kms before Ghat is pretty bad. A lot dusty. Post Uppinangady, lot of road work. I think after 6 months, it would be 90% complete.
Return was from Udupi so tried Agumbe Shimoga route. It's quite long and not worth the additional distance.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi All,

I am back for my annual vacation to Bangalore. My car is alto 800. It lies idle for the entire year and my dad just starts it once in couple of weeks. The engine oil was changed 2 years ago. But it has ran about 2000kms only. Should I change the oil before the trip. Anything else I need to check?

Also what would be the best route for Bangalore to Udupi?
