well, Being the ever ready fiat Buff , A Siena of 2002 Vintage in Delhi Can be had for 1.25 lakhs , and I believe it is a far decent car than the escort with that 1.2 Ltr powerplant under it
agreed that in mid 90s the escorts and cielos were the rage but believe me that was just because they had all those new fangled gizmos like power antennas and four way adjustable seats and what not...

steer clear of the escort idea, if you are not a mechanic or if you are not living in a garage. The jugaads will run out but the pangas will not.....

my two bits , rest is for you to decide, everybody has a dream car, maybe the escort has taken your fancy

I suggest you drop the escort idea and hunt around a little more.

Infact when you are so tightly set to the tag of 1.25 lakhs we actually need to get it to 1.10 lakhs for the car and another 15 thou to make it more "habitable" in terms of service etc. of suspension, oil change ye woh etc etc So for that amount a vintage of 2000-2001 is the most we would go for a car with max 100 K KMs on the ODO , Nothing More

Ensure you buy a Businessman's car, nowadays businessmen use their car lesser then those in service LOL.

Go through the Sunday classifieds for Used cars and try to call up all for Lancers, Ikons, Sienas, Petras, i e all 3 Compartments cars you believe can be had for less than 2 lakhs if possible.

as far as Stopping and troubling you is concerned , it may happen to any car on any given day, just the other day saw a beemer being towed. so show it to a competent mechanic before buying

Hunt around for Lancers bro. In Calcutta you can get lancers for as low as 60 - 70 also. Condition may not be that good, but then you can easily spend around 20 k and get it done up.

I am just implying that you look around in your city. Talk to your garage wala/ driver and ask them to let you know. Maybe give them some bakseesh if they come up with a good lead.

If you want a car that gives you some amount of snob value why not get hld of a W123 Mercedes. I would reccomend a Zen or an Esteem at your budget but since you dont want a common car Id probably go with the w123.

But isn't that going to be like crazy to maintain ? I know they are built like tanks, but what if something does go wrong and needs to be replaced ?
How expensive are the spares, and can they be bought locally ?

Just curious.

Not too sure about that, I believe W124 parts arent that tough or expensive to get in Mumbai.

I would not go near an old Merc. The spares are exorbitantly priced I belive a fuel pump costs around 80k or so.

Lancer seems to be good option with option of modding in future plus it has good handling which will help since you would drive on highways

He deserved to get 45k while scrapping as he had paid quite a bit when he bought it. He is really lucky, your friend.

Lancers for 60-70k ? Are you sure you are talking about the Mitsubishi Lancer made by Hindustan Motors ?

How about a 1.6 Astra, or a Daewoo Nexia?

I don't know about their maintainence costs, but they are any day better options than the horrid Escort.

hi pingping,
better to go for an esteem at that price. It would serve you better than escort.

DON'T Touch an escort with a barge pole, but if u have lots of patience to drive safely, switch off A/c switch every time when overtaking, prepared to wait for ever like when u want to get rid of it they u can buy. its slow but sure finisher.
