MUL Dealer offered a buyback of my Jan 2006 6.75OTR, 18K kms VXi for around 3.75 to 4 - for a switch to SX4 - last month. That would mean there's a market price of 4+ for that model.
3.5ish should be an OK price for the car you mentioned. But obviously - bargain haaard !!
Baleno = bargain. New or Used

Aditya
Shuv was talking about the Kolkata market and you probably the Bombay market. There will be a price difference obviously.
Buying a used vehicle makes sense if you don't personally want to take the depriciation; but the trade off is you never know what you are getting. Remember also that selling the Baleno after three years at a decent price will be a hell of a headache.
True Value is a rip off, at least in Kolkata.
Check if the dealers have some unsold stock of new vehicles - you should get them at rock bottom price.

some used car dealers really think their customers are goats!

i had been to automartindia in nungambaakam, chennai looking for an esteem which i told was on sale there......and to my surprise i see this beat up esteem LX 2002 model with no power steering, no power windows at the real, no spoiler, no alloys.....had faded paint alll over the bonnet....the engine would put a diesel to shame when it come to the amount of noise it made!!!!!!!

and that marketing guy wanted 2.5L for that!!!!!!!!!! i told him he must be JOKING! no fool would pay that much for that tin box!

P.S - the OVRM's on either side were fixed to be permanently open with cable tensioners and super glue!

TBH, in Bangalore atleast the baleno seems to be doing what VTEC did years ago. Used car prices of baleno are shooting up since its manufacturing was stopped. Reason is most college going kids/performance seekers etc who cannot find VTEC's are hunting down for used baleno's. Yesterday 3 cars were nabbed by guys not more than 24yrs old at a second hand car dealer near my house. For a premium. One car 2002 model done 69,000 went as high as 3.75L.

Though I am guessing that a couple of years down the line baleno might hardly fetch anything. Or maybe it will, depending on whether we have better choices in terms of cars that are mod friendly. Well all we can do is wait and watch.

mclaren, I dont think its just a Bangalore phenomenon.

Somebody on the forum had posted a link to the carwale price evaluator.
I checked the resale value of my Baleno-Lxi and my friends Accent GLE bought together in Mar2005 (both costed approx 5.8lakhs on-road). To make a fair comparo, I used the kms done figure as same (17000kms done by my car).

See the figures I got (if car is sold to an individual) :

Car condition Excellent Good Fair
Baleno Lxi : 4,53,500 4,38,000 4,16,000
Accent GLE : 3,64,500 3,51,700 3,32,000

See the huge difference in resale values for both cars, inspite of Accent being a hit and Baleno a sort of flop.

Out of curiosity, I also checked the resale value for an Mar-2005, 17000kms done NHC-Exi because that was the other car I had in mind during my purchase. The values I got were 5,71,500, 5,51,700 and 5,15,500 for excellent, good and fair condition respectively. The onroad price for the car in Mar2005 was 7,42,000.

The Baleno depreciated by 21.81 %, while the Honda depreciated by 22.77%. So much for the oft-quoted high resale value for Hondas.

P.S. : This is just an example and I do not know how accurate the evaluator is. And I am definitely no good at used car values in the actual market.

Mar 2005 Baleno for 4.53L seems pretty preposterous to me. The moment the car is driven out of the showroom, it loses 10% of its value. For a 2 years & few months old car, i dont think that is the right price, of course there could be some people who are willing to pay that price, but that is not the general consensus.

P.S, right now, the price just came down to 4.42. 4.22 & 4.05 on carwale.com.

Oh!
Let me tell U some info about this car(s).
This belonged to Jet Airways and they were being disposed of as a batch of 30 to 40 cars.2002,2003 models.Every car had run 2 to 3 lakh kms.Interiors were like a cycle rickshaw. These cars were for sale to me for Rs.1,30,000 to 1,40,000.
Now U know how much Automart is making off the sale.

Automart were always big crooks. I remember once in 2002 when i was searching for an esteem for a friend in bangalore, they showed me a crap 95 model which was not even cleaned, with the matting in shreds & asked 2.2L.

I agree that it is not very realistic price, thats why the "P.S." in my post.

I just quoted their figures to get a comparo between the cars and not to arrive at any actual resale value.
