A used Corolla would be a good buy but the resale will be hit as the model will be stopped soon after new model comes in. Cedia resale too aint great. Since you wanna buy a car only for 3 yrs go for a SX4 Vxi. It will give you better resale since its a new model.

Since you are going to use it for only 3 years, to save on excessive depreciation, you need to either (a) get a second hand car that is 2-3 years old or (b) buy a new car that will hold its value (Honda City comes to my mind).
I would have opted for (a) since,
-- the first 3 years is when your car gets depreciated fast. If the car has clocked only about 30K in those 3 years, it is a good buy
-- Not many parts in a car will go wrong in those 30K kms. Since your running is going to be low (500 kms a month - 18,000 kms in 3 years), you won't be spending much on maintenance.

Imagine - you buy a new car and use it for 3 years/18000 kms, and then sell it off losing about 2.5 lakhs.

Have a look at Swift Dzire, Mahindra Renault Logan at the lower spectrum of midsize car segment.
Out of Honda City and SX4, go for SX4. It is cheaper to maintain and has a lot of features.

IMHO, you should look forward to a diesel vehicle.

Friends, sorry for the 6 month delay! Got deputed to bangalore and finally back to chennai. The santro i have currently has won my dad's heart for such a long time because of high reliability, very good mileage and low maintanence cost. That stood as the reason for him not budging to my idea of upgrading to a sedan.but now i have serious issues with the car and finally my dad has given the green signal to go ahead with my options but he wants to keep the budget below 4 lakhs. my idea of buying a used civic for 8.5 lakhs was not appreciated by him as he thinks for that price he could go for a SUV. so i started browsing through all our team bhp forums and finally rounded off to used Ford fusion petrol version. The reason is,
1.i don't want to push my dad for my dream civic because both my dad and me are adventure lovers and would always like to take long trips to hilly areas once in 2 months.I cannot give any supportive argument to civic because my dad thinks he could well go ahead for a SUV which has plenty of space and comfort rather than a civic and i honestly agree it.
2.Currently he wants me to buy some other car for price tag below 4 lakhs, use it for some time about 2-3 years and then definitely upgrade to a SUV later. My dream for a civic is dead and gone! :-(
3. I think Ford fusion is really good. I saw a red one and it was awesome! I thought it was a SUV from the front! I really love its style! Moreover i can get a used fusion for 4 lakhs. Two benefits- my dad's budget under control, gives a pleasure of SUV with good GC and boot space. So finally this is what i have decided. But still i would only go by the advice of you all. Do advice me if Fusion is recommended or not.
Also i have a imagination of fixing a spare tyre(5 spoke alloy wheel) in the fusion's rear to give it a SUV look along with a rear spoiler and prevent it from being mistaken as a indica!!
