How do the third party sites benefit from offering direct MF sales if they don't receive commissions?

Interestingly ETMONEY themselves have answered this question in Quora - link here

In their words - they have product offerings apart from mutual funds and they generate revenue from them by charging the partners and not the customers.

In a few years time you may as well be thanking your stars for holding on to your money :-).
Current equity market situation is disjoined from the real world (exceptions exist, of course). Unless one keeps booking those paper gains, one can never be assured of the returns. Banking on this virtual profit to assess one's FI would be a risky proposition.
I'm among the idiots holding on to cash - not waiting for a crash, but the valuations to turn more reasonable.
How big an idiot I am, I'll find out in a few years.

I use zerodha. They are good. No tantrums or hidden changes. One doesn't need to do SIP etc(though the facility is there) you can place direct order as and when you want. I know some platforms throw tantrums for cancelling SIP.
Zerodha is made for app based investing.

Earlier I was using icicidirect. Still use it for direct equity. The convenience was outstanding there, money comes directly to bank account but their charges are high and irrational and they don't offer direct plans. Onetime brokerage or high platform charges are fine with me but recurring trailing commission to a distributor is not.

Technically, a segregated portfolio is created out of a debt fund when one of the underlying debt security turns bad (e.g. issuing company becomes bankrupt). Your father would have actually invested in the Nippon India Strategic Debt Fund, but they would have created the segregated portfolio when a debt "event" happened.

Unfortunately in segregated portfolios, we can't do anything. Just hope and wait for the resolution of the debt.

Same has happened with my investment in Franklin India Low Duration fund - segregated porfolio which is stuck with Vodafone debt. Money trickles in whenever Vodafone pays off some part of the debt.

In past few years, there were too many of such defaults (Zee, Vodafone, DHFL, .....) and most of the debt funds investors are saddled with such segregated portfolios

Are there any MFs investing in distressed assets ? Has anyone invested in such funds ? Any feedback or thoughts on investing in distressed assets ? I suppose it's a high risk high rewards game ?

You may want to check out Credit Risk funds. These are debt funds which invest mostly in debt instruments rated AA and below. I had investments in HDFC Credit Risk fund earlier but redeemed after the Franklin Templeton debt funds fiasco last year, and moved to safer categories.

Question is: Why do you want to invest in those at-all? As a retail investor I mean. The extra 2-3% that you MAY get out of those isn't worth the risk. If you want to take risk, stick to Equity. Debt MFs, for retail investors, is meant for risk management (re de-risking or liquidity management) only.

Again: This is my personal perspective and for a retail investor only. If you aren't a retain investor, then its a different argument.

There seems to be too much liquidity in the market, which may be mopped up by the central bank anytime. Probably they were printing currency to take care of deficits for a while now, especially post pandemic. Not only India, probably the US as well. As soon as it is stopped and the interest rates start going north, the markets may not look so good. Also, there is a huge energy crisis looming, many parts of India are likely to face power cuts, industry and the economy may take a hit. Better to keep the money for now and see what happens.

Just my opinion!

MF Central vs MF Utility

Not sure if this is covered before, but how are MFUtility (https://www.mfuindia.com) and MF Central (https://www.mfcentral.com) portal differ?
  • MF Central: Launched by CAMS and KFintech (Karvy) who are registrars for most of the MFs , whereas
  • MF Utility: Launched by AMFI - association of all MFs.

I am a bit confused why MF Central was launched in the first place when MF Utility looks to do exactly same? Am I missing something here?

If anyone has used MF Central, any feedback please?

Here is the link to mfcentral shared in this thread earlier. Presently it is in Phase-1 trial where no financial transactions possible. We need to wait till end of year to performing transactions.

.
Also MFU has teased some updates in their site called MFU Box office Xpert (BOX). Waiting for the formal launch of this as well.

Re: The Mutual Funds Thread

Newbie query: How are Mutual funds taxed? If for eg I invest 10k and after a certain period of time the fund is valued at 15k and I redeem 5k will that 5k amount be subject to tax? In this case I have earned around 5000 Rs and my original 10k is still intact so what will be my tax liability here?

Thanks.

Re: The Mutual Funds Thread

Capital gains on MF units are calculated on a first in first out basis. So let's say you bought ten units of X funds and another ten units a month later for a total of twenty units. Today you sell ten units so it's the difference between the cost of the first lot of ten units and today's NAV which is the net appreciation or loss. If you have held these units for at least a year then you pay LTCG tax on the amount exceeding a lakh in capital gains for that year Hope this made sense.

This is just for illustration, generate a CG statement to understand the exact tax implications
