Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

Foist them on your son in law!

I got gifted my aunts near 20yo Golf recently, which comes replete with CD player but more importantly a cassette deck. Cue my father in law cheerfully gifting me all the old mixtapes whenever he can, ever since I came into possession of said car. Legitimately have a bag in the back of the car with a lot of these cassettes. Some of these mix tapes are rather sweet, like ones from my wife's childhood for eg, so ultimately it's all good fun.

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

A quick snapshot of my collection. Still have around 90% of whatever tapes i bought back in the day. Along with CDs.

The time spent poring over the booklet inside while the music played on; such joyous memories.

The time spent browsing and buying at Planet M, Music World. Sigh

There is something about analog sound that fills the heart/ears with warmth and joy.

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

One way to perpetuate the joy of listening is to convert them to digital form. I have converted ove 200 DC's using the highest bit rate available. The sound quality is at par with analog output, with the advantage of being portable to current digital players - phones, mp3/4 players etc.

For cassetes it is even more important to archive them, as over time the tape gets stretched, scratched and the media deteriorates. A good casette player coupled with good conversion software will archive the tapes to digital media seamlessly.

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

Nostalgia gripped me recently again!! If anyone is giving/selling/disposing off their audio cassettes on Western Rock/Pop/Blues/Metal, please remember me. Though I moved to Streaming and HiRes audio a while ago, this cassette bug bites me once in a while. That HISSS is bliss at times.

I do have some cassettes - classic rock, and the not-so-old Hindi film songs. Will post a pic of these so you can let me know which ones you want.

Open to anyone who wants the cassettes.

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

Hi deathwalkr,

I have not checked this one myself but according to cheapaudioman's YouTube review, it's just fine. Please see his take as he mentions clearly that its more of the cassette player feeling that he's enjoying. 10k is bit steep I think though it has a built-in rechargeable battery.

Regards

From the reviews i have seen, it shares the mechanism/transport used by much cheaper decks, and only the circuitry is better.

Wow/flutter specs were the same as the cheaper ones, so I am not sure it would be an improvement over a used sony walkman. I have a late 90's one which works fine post a belt change, and belts are available very cheap on amazon

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

Similar problem, have around 150 DVD's and 50 Blu Ray disc's- all original in their jewel cases, unused and untouched for last 4+ years. Not having the heart to dispose, not sure what to do!!!

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

Had hundred of cassettes lying with me. Bought a device that converts the cassettes to digital output. It was a pain using it. So never converted. Gave them off to used stuff buyer for free along with old desktop computer.
With online audio apps, we can listen to any song anytime and haven't missed the cassettes.

Re: What to do with a cassette collection?

I, too, have many audio cassettes lying around. I had given them away for free a long time ago, but still have a few left. Now, I'm not sure what can be done with them, as no one uses them these days.

I have converted all my CD's and DVD's to digital format. For this I bought a USB DVD player and used free software to "RIP" the data on to USB HDD.

There are many options available while converting and you can use very high rate is you are bothered about fidelity.

I plan to do the same if I get a decent cassette player.
