Ah, what gems of human rights right there. The leading lights, nein, Effigies of rights and freedom, sometimes..most times.. on fire!

The pie of telco revenues is big, brown, and juicy. Are they in losses? So it would probably be a "gain share" between them and the powers that be?
I just love the sheer shameless relentlessness of the in-favor people who are trying to push this, both corporate, and government!

@Samurai; Yes as per the current Trump mindset. However, remember he is a newbie in politics so more likely to both try new things, and make mistakes. He is definitely no the media's darling. This is the first time I am hearing talk of an impeachment even before a President has assumed office!

The moot point will be how and when does he undo his mistakes.

Is this of any significance? Experts may please comment and shed light on what might be in store for India.

Sorry if this is OT.

When this thread started, USA had net neutrality and India was about to lose it. Now India has net neutrality and USA is about lose it. I am shamed to know that a person of Indian origin is in-charge of this destruction.

It had to happen one day, and now that the left leaning president is gone, it is time for free markets to take over.

Very soon, India would follow suit.

I hope people in US oppose it tooth and nail. It's a regressive law and its impact will be devastating for start ups and SME.

That is going to be a real nightmare. If you don't understand the real long time impact of free market, I suggest you read A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. It covers the history of 18-19th century America when it had truly free market.

When we get as plutocratic as USA, that might even happen.

America prospered under a free market economy and we know what happened to USSR and Cuba. Even the democratic presidents shied away from the left, but the leftist Obama ruined the country for 8 years.

Am sure Modi will throw out net neutrality in his current term itself.

Re: The fight for net neutrality is on! Time to reclaim the internet

America prospered under a free-market economy? Do you mean American government revenue increased, or American corporate revenue increased? Because there are other threads with links to statistics showing that the American people today earn less in real terms compared to 50 years ago, and surveys say they are less happy too (more gun-happy maybe, no offense intended).

Before somebody disses statistics, let me point out that prosperity is also a statistic.

Net neutrality thrown out? What's next, different tolls for different lanes of the road? A toll for the road to come out of your house?

A free market is good for everybody, when it is a free market for everybody: egalitarian. As an example of a Net-neutral aka egalitarian alternative to F-book Free Basics, see jana.com

The free market argument and non interference from the government make for great ideological pitches, reality is not so black and white. Unfortunately, for the taxpayer, the firms that stand to benefit from the new rules used government subsidies to pay themselves bonuses when they received money from the government for laying cable. If they were obsessed with free markets, why did they take the money?

Obama was a leftist in the culture wars, on the economy he was pretty much a big business shill who knew which side of the bread was buttered. He was happy with socialised losses for his campaign financiers.

Unfortunately we seem to be getting there. Not the same route taken in the US, but the end situation is turning out to be very similar.

If this ruling gets changed, it'll impact everyone.

Sarcasm? Or did you mean to post this on the jokes thread?

Anyway, this isn't an Obama vs Trump argument. So let's stick to the core point - net neutrality.

Re: The fight for net neutrality is on! Time to reclaim the internet

If the internet gets colonized, it might lead to some other form of information sharing. I'm certain that with the level of entrepreneurial activity that exists today, someone would make another channel which would have similar characteristics but might be better in so many ways. One that I can think about is the cost of connectivity- the internet requires very long fiber optic cables that run under the ocean floor. If there could be a decentralized method that relies on wireless transmission completely, that might solve the problem.

Something of that sort has already happened. Innovation will always triumph over restrictions. It might take time, but it will happen. People who are short sighted might want to make the internet resemble the cable television, but then the smarter ones would create the future.

People developed bitcoin to bypass banks (although that's not what it is right now), so people can make a better way to restore net neutrality. Let's trust in the future.
