The 10/- note which you have posted has a very good value in today's market. I will easily value it around 4 - 5K.

I will post some notes from my collection soon.

Regards,

Kavissh
4-5k? That is good to know

Do post pics of your collection

Re: Currency Notes & Coins from around the world

So a few days back my father had gone to his ancestral place and was doing some cleaning and found a bunch of old coins in an old cupboard.

Managed to sort and identify a few of them.

1)Princely state of Kutch 1780-1872

2)Chola Dynasty 985-1014

3)Maratha Empire (Shivaji) 1664-1680

Followed by Mysore kingdom coins of Tippu and Wodeyar era.

Had some east inda company coins as well and some tiny yet unidentified ones. working on that now

Simply wow, do you use archaeological department help to identify these ancient coins?

The above said period is supposed to be the golden age of Cholas with Raja Raja Chola at the helm and it aroused my curiosity.

Google lens was my friend. Linked me up with various online forums that listed similar coins.

For more accurate details regarding the denomination and year, i will need to spend time on the coins. Later maybe.

Re: Currency Notes & Coins from around the world

I believe the Chola period coins are not just collector material level but exhibit material.

In TN, Raja Raja Chola is still a cult material after the Epic novel called 'Ponniyin Selvan' by Kalki (1950s) and they read and wander around the Chola places thereby having an emotional imaginary bond (I am one of them).

There is a group called 'heritage inspired' who organize tours that mainly covers the places from that novel. Link - https://heritageinspired.in/ I am not associated with them in any way but have attended the webinars they arranged during lock down with archaeologists.

I hope there will be very interesting story about those coins that ended up with your ancestors. Please dig in and let us know.

Are they that rare? I did some quick googling and prices for chola era coins were in the hundreds or so only.

Honestly I do not know the monetary value of these old coins. I have seen them only in Chennai museum. Here is the weblink of what is displayed - https://www.chennaimuseum.org/draft/...4/01/coin5.htm

When I read your post, I felt they are of excellent archaeological value as it is part of past history. I will be excited to see and feel them if it is in a private exhibit especially with those type of heritage tours.

When I searched google, I came across this link - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/chola_dynasty-1.html. It shows the rarity index also but don't know how it is calculated or whether it is really valid. Some are rare and some are common depending on the coin. Please check this out.

From a historical viewpoint, these coins are just amazing. Who knows these coins may have passed through the hands of the great king himself!

Too bad there are no gold coins in this little treasure find

All my coins i hold them dearly and i am just happy that finding out information about them is easy these days.

Checking the Museum link now. Thanks. Should be useful to id a few coins that escape me.

Re: Currency Notes & Coins from around the world

I have inherited 2x500rs notes withdrawn from an ATM in 2005 or so, with printing on only one side of each note. Anyone have any idea on an approx value of these?
