Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

Dear Friends,
I think a saga of indomitable human spirit, courage, tenacity, compassion, perseverance is unfolding in Thai caves of Tham Luang. While its caught the attention of the world it is somehow missing from the mind space in this part of the world.

I feel its a story which deserves attention and our collective wishes and prayers must go out for the young kids of the Wild Boar team who are showing such a courage and composure in face of an adversity which is seemingly beyond the collective efforts of the best in the world. Hats off to the coach as well who is keeping them in spirits, they are in. They are living to the their name 'Wild Boars'.

Elon Musk, Bear Grylls, Ronaldo and many more individuals have contributed their time and effort besides the Govts of USA, Australia, UK, China, Vietnam, Laos and many more. Tricolour flying their would have made me proud.

Perhaps some divers on the forum or if someone has visited Tham Luang could chip in with their knowledge. Nevertheless, Wild Boars need all the support and our best wishes.

Here are some links to the unfolding story

Evacuation has started. Four kids out of twelve have been freed from the cave as per latest update. I'm sure the remaining kids too will be successfully rescued by the rescue teams. Some world class rescue work by the teams on site. Let's pray for their safety.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

The boys are still not out but credit goes to

The Thai Govt for putting any ego aside and callng out for specialised assistance at an early stage.

The quick response across the world to send people in

The Chiang Rai governor who has had to make the toughest decisions and gain the consensus of the parents

The local population who have stepped up to assist in anyway they can without interfering and being voyeurs.

The PM who has stayed away to let operation go unhampered and will visit the site only today

There will be many more, I hope their efforts will not be in vain!

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

I remember a case in India many years ago where a little boy fell into an open bore well and after hours of rescue operations, the boy was finally being pulled up. It so happened that the local Minister was not present on the scene for the cameras, so the boy was slightly lowered into the well to make it appear he is being pulled up with the minister in the frame. Such is the ridiculousness to which our people and ministers can stoop to. Would be nice if India learns from the Thai people.

Pleasant to see the mature behaviour and coverage on the Thailand case. Hope the mission is successful and the boys come out unscathed.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

This was the of the moment boys were located by the divers, shared by Thai NavySEAL on their facebook page.

It was reported that they have used naturally filtered water dripping from the cave walls and coach advised the kids to conserve energy. It is still amazing how did they manage to stay 10 days without any external supply in that dark unhygienic cave. If you see the video, they were asking what day it is. This may be one of the greatest survival stories of our time.

It was also good to see Thailand taking International help at an early stage of search and rescue operations. Some of the best known experts in this field are on-site helping in this rescue mission.

Prayers for safe return of the remaining kids.

A former Thai navy diver has died while taking part in efforts to rescue 12 boys and their football coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. RIP

Quote:
Petty Officer Saman Gunan lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex, where he had been delivering air tanks.
Quote:
The death of Saman - a highly trained diver - on Thursday underscored the danger of moving from the chamber to mouth of the cave, and raised serious doubts about the safety of bringing the boys out through the cramped, flooded passageways.

The diver died after losing consciousness in one of the passageways, said Passakorn Boonyaluck, deputy governor of the Chiang Rai region, where the cave is situated.

"His job was to deliver oxygen. He did not have enough on his way back," Mr Passakorn said.

He said that Saman's dive partner tried to revive him but could not, and his body was brought out of the cave.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

There are a couple of aspects in this story that have got my mind working,

First, why did the coach take these boys into the cave for the ritual, knowing the weather conditions, was it plain foolishness or foolhardiness or spirit of adventure and boldness wherein there is always a probability, though very minute, of things going awry. To me last explanation looks most plausible.

Second, seeing the composure and tenacity of the boys in the video, I am very impressed with capabilities of the monk turned coach. He surely makes men of steel out of boys.

Third, conduct of Thai media and Govt and comparison to our own media, especially the electronic, lesser said the better.

Lastly, a link just picked up from ET, I think the author has covered another aspect pretty well.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

4 more boys now rescued out of the cave in today's rescue operations.

That's making a total of 8 boys now rescued. Now 4 more boys and the coach is remaining in the cave.

Great the way this situation is being handled and the courage the boys have shown so far is outstanding. I saw some videos, they are not afraid at all and have full faith that they will be rescued.

I am unable to find the data about how deep is the water in the cave?
Also how far away are the folks from open air?

The boys are struck at about 11 kms into the cave. It is the narrow structure of the cave that's filled with water now and lack of oxygen at certain parts of the cave, making the rescue operations difficult. It takes 11 hours for a round trip.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

Damn!!!!

- 38 cms wide
- Total Darkness
- Submerged in Water, most likely muddy

It's very tough to even imagine the difficulty level of this rescue operation. Really hope that all are able to make it out and feeling bad for the diver who lost his life. :(
This is really scary.

Re: Trapped in a cave - A soccer team from Thailand

I am still not getting if the boys entered the cave using the same path the rescuers are trying to get them out. If so, how did they manage to enter the point where it is only 38 cms wide? As the path is not straight, did they manage to climb up and down the path leading to where they are now?
