AlphaGo available on netflix. Highly recommended even if you are not interested in AI.

The Dawn Wall

Really worth a watch if you want an uplifting TRUE STORY about guts, determination, brotherhood, trauma, insane motivation, kidnapping, loss, overcoming obstacles -- all packaged into a very well put together & fast-moving documentary made by Red Bull media house.

Hopefully you choose to watch it without looking into it further.

6/5
Recommending another related documentary and equally great: Free Solo
This one also won the academy award for the best documentary in 2018.
Its available on YouTube for rent.
Rating: 5/5 - Its simply breathtaking!

I binge watched the 10 part "The Vietnam War" on Netflix and it is superb. Now watching WW2 in colour. Please suggest good and impartial documentaries on WW1 and 2, cold war, Afghan war, Cuban Missile crisis etc.

There is another more recent one called Greatest events of world war 2. The one you mentioned was made in 2009 so this one has some additional uncovered footage

The Russian Five: If you like sports documentaries, don't miss this one. Its about the true story of how Detroit Red Wings ended their Stanley Cup drought by getting Russian hockey players. You don't have to be an Ice Hockey fan to appreciate this very well made and educative film.

Rated: 5 stars

Fahrenheit 11/9: Eye opening documentary on the state of affairs in the US of A by the celebrated Michael Moore. Previously he has also directed Fahrenheit 9/11.

Rating: 4/5

PS: while watching the documentary I realized that 911 is the number for emergency in USA. Quite significant, that number.

The Gentlemen 4.5/5

Bit of marmite one - you love it or hate it. Typical Guy Ritchie gangster movie complete with cockney accents etc. Hugh Grant was brilliant. It get a little slow around the end of the 1st half but speeds up after the interval

If you are interested in knowing more about Warren Buffet and his philosophy, do give this well made documentary a watch (rating: 4/5):

I really like films/ documentaries by PBS. Presently watching the three part series: Commanding Heights. It traces the development of modern economy and globalization. (Rating: 5/5)

Watched Martyrs of Marriage on Netflix 4/5

^Promo. Gender biased laws are worse than anything my mind can imagine to exist in a civilised world.

Re: The Documentaries Thread (English only)

Friends, This is an appropriate time to check this documentary. Not sure how many of us are aware of Naomi Klein but worth your time to understand how economic policies are drawn up during crisis times to serve the 1%.

I would rate it 5/5.

Free solo if I am not wrong won an oscar as well. Its an astonishing display of what human beings can achieve if they put their heart and soul into something.

Another excellent recommendation. This is also the one for the doubters who says he planned everything so that he could get into politics.

Thanks for the recommendation. Watched it yesterday and found it extremely good. Biased (obviously) but not pretentious. The narrative and editing are top-notch. Everything feels raw and natural. And it is certainly not a sugar-coated pill.

The undercurrent of the uneasiness of compromising on your ideals, to move forward towards your goal made it a very humane and not an artificial or biased propaganda. No unwanted voice-overs, no glossy interviews, no fancy gimmicks. This is straight from the heart. Indeed a must watch.

A complete 5/5 from my side.

PS: Wish the makers of "The Tashkent Files" had taken a leaf out of this documentary. That would have been a powerful blockbuster.

Re: The Documentaries Thread (English only)

Adding another recommendation for the day. If you have an interest in American politics, do watch the 2 part docu-series by PBS titled 'America's great divide.' An eye opener in terms of the fissures that exist in their society and polity.
