Do you install by yourself? I've noticed that local workmen don't like it if we buy from Amazon, etc. They get a commission if bought locally, even if you do the purchase yourself.

The guys in Bangalore are not above damaging the part intentionally just to make you run around for returns.

I only order stuff that I can install by myself.

In August last, late at night, I was trying to purchase a 256 GB Samsung EVO Select microSD card for my phone from Flipkart. The price shown was an unbelievably low Rs. 1.1k. So I added it to my cart and proceeded to place an order.

I happened to notice just in time that the price had increased in these few minutes to 1.65k+. Disappointed, and annoyed, I aborted the purchase.

A few minutes later, it was again offered at 1.1k, and again it increased to 1.65k+ before I could place the order!

This fluctuation in price repeated every 4-5 minutes, believe it or not! I don't remember if the seller kept changing too. But every 4-5 minutes for about 30 minutes or so that I was watching?!

Just before I gave up annoyed, I decided to act quickly one last time, and was actually able to snag the deal at 1.1k, and went to sleep, happy!

I received the microSD card the very next day! It appeared to be a genuine product too, and has been working just fine in my phone ever since.

The current price of the same card at Flipkart is 1.9k (after the ongoing devaluation of the Rupee). The experience remains etched in my memory, and I'll forever wonder about the business logic behind it.

Yes I have. I have a good collection of spanners, wrenches, etc, most of which never get used, so it was nice to do so.

I had to buy a couple of sundry items, to replace the old, corroded, scaly ones, from a nearby hardware shop. Otherwise, it was five-minute job that took only about thirty minutes. Nothing broke or went wrong, and connections were watertight first time. I think that has to be a first for me: a "five minute" job that took only a few minutes!

My only problem was that the hole in the sink was supposed to 35mm and turned out to be only 30mm. It was a little difficult to push the tails and connectors through, but I did it.

I want to realign it a bit. but that will put the holding nut at the back, which will be tough for a spanner. A set of Box Spanners is on order. I have a few but not the required size.

My experience with taps and online shopping has been a mixed bag - 50:50. The first two were disastrous, with the units looking externally flawless and well packaged. But upon fixing, were found to be leaking.
This was part of my reasoning to buy from a local shop rather than Amazon. But it didn't work out.

Yes, it was DIY. I'd like to replace the undersink taps, because they are old and drippy. But that really is a job for a real plumber.

It's a calculated risk. If something had broken I could easily have found myself very wet and screaming for a plumber! On a Saturday evening and without my Tamil-speaking wife at home.

I did; and I did it properly.

But the tap mechanism itself was faulty/leaky. The next one was a health faucet which was dripping from the spray part. It was a small loss, of about a thousand bucks.

I wondered about testing mine before fitting. But it didn't really make sense: if there had been a problem, it was only a little more work to remove it from the sink.

Mind you, I didn't have a fallback position as my old tap tails and connectors did fall apart when I removed them.

(we should be in the DIY thread!)

Re: The Online Shopping Thread

Experts on Amazon shopping - A query.

Can I pay for the items added to the cart using both Amazon Pay balance and Amazon Shopping Voucher balance? For eg if I have both balances at 10k and the items added total to 16k, how does one pay using both the balances? Has anyone done this recently?

I have both Amazon Pay Balance and Amazon Shopping Voucher. I tried placing order for one the item and I cannot select both the options. It is allowing me to select either of the option.

There seems to have been a recent change in their payment policy. I have Amazon Pay balance of 7k and yesterday, when I made a purchase of 20k, it didn't allow me part pay using Amazon Pay and remaining via other options. I had to make the whole purchase using CC.

Earlier, payment using multiple sources was allowed where I have paid using a mix of wallet balance, gift card and UPI.

Do you have the total order value in Pay balance and/or Shopping Voucher individually? What I mean is, does the Pay balance cover the total order value?

Amazon has changed its policy on how different payment methods can be used. A year earlier, one could fully utilize the entire amount in Amazon Pay balance/Shopping voucher and pay the "delta" via another mode. Now, you can't do this anymore. Amazon expects payment to come fully from only one method of payment. They explain this in the following FAQ.

Good question. When I posted the above message, I had tried with the item value of less than Amazon Pay Balance and Amazon Gift Voucher balances.
Now, when I added an item of worth more than Amazon Gift Voucher, then it is allowing me to select both the options. Please have a look.

Edit:
I did some experiment and found that Amazon Gift Voucher can be clubbed with any other payment options (including Amazon Pay Balance), but the same cannot be done using Amazon Pay Balance.

Re: The Online Shopping Thread

Is Online Shopping really worthwhile if one has ease of going to wholesale market and spare time for surfing the market ?
Recently someone requested for a couple of Casio digital wrist watches listed on Amazon USA at $16.73, Rs. 1,297/- in India, which I got for Rs. 825/- from Watch Market, Chandni Chowk with Warranty. For Mobile Phones, shopkeepers claim that sometimes the Models sold Online are not made available in the market so that prices may not be compared.

Ya policy is changed now, what you could have done is loaded Amazon pay with 13K and then utilized 7K taking amazon pay balance as 20K. I have been using this method from last few months. It also gives you the option to load Amazon pay to the exact difference amount.

Re: The Online Shopping Thread

Hi. About a year ago I got a Sony headunit (XAV-AX8100) installed in my car. The USB Extension Cable (long) with the ferrite choke was damaged at the time of installation. I didn't know at that time that it was damaged. I need to buy a new cable but it is not available at Sony Service Centre near me. The official support helpline does not help in this regard. Upon doing a web search, I found a website sharvi electronics.
https://sharvielectronics.com/produc...-core-3-meter/

Will this work for Android Auto? I have also seen suggestions for using shielded cables and clip on ferrite chokes. Please help me in this regard.

P.S. - I have also tried offline car accessories market and audio accessories market (Not Nehru Place in Delhi) but they offer cheap cables with fake ferrite chokes.

Sharvi electronics is a reliable seller and I have shopped with them in the past.

IIRC, one end of the cable goes into the Sony HU and is out of sight, whereas the other end has the USB A female opening with a ferrite core. I do not understand how this extension cable will help you? Are you planning to open up the HU, cut the male end of the extension and solder the cable onto the board?

If only the ferrite core is damaged, then it will not have any impact on performance. You can use the damaged cable without issues.

The unit came with a short and long extension cable. The short one goes into the unit. The long one then connects to the short one outside the unit. The damage was to the long cable itself before the ferrite core. It was pressed by some tool and was flattened and damaged. Every time I connected the phone and the cable moved (speed bump etc), the fuse would blow.

If ferrite core is not that important would a simple USB extension cable work?
My aim is to get the Android Auto working and then go wireless using the Raspberry pi DIY.
