Dear sir, that statement is not a comment on Testing, rather it was made with regards of another gentleman's post on the asymptomatic cases. In case of any infective diseases the diagnosis is not only meant to decide the course of treatment but to also stop the subsequent infection of others.Your concern is genuine that what if a person get's cross-infected and remains asymptomatic.

Since there have been quite a few cases where fatalities have been reported without any symptoms and co-morbidities hence that comment of mine.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

I believe it is more or less associated with the Social stigma that we have in our society. More than getting tested people are more worried about what will happen if they eventually come out positive. My first hand views on this are
1. It ain’t AIDS or STD that you have to be ashamed of. It’s a common cold (advanced version) and if you have generally have ok immunity than you’ll be fine.
2. Lots of stories about how the swab sample is taken and how painful it is. Truth is it ain’t painful at all and the process is simple enough for a normal human being
3. Employment : The isolation period after testing positive is something that’s bothering few of us considering no pay during that time. This I believe is the biggest reason people are afraid of getting the test done

PS : contract it once, Recover and then live peacefully without having to think about contracting COVID again. Just my thought

IMHO, you shouldn't be ashamed of 1 as well.

It is better to be safe and loose that pay of 15 days rather than delaying the diagnosis. I have lost someone very close in the family due to a delayed diagnosis. Further, I had a hell of a time to convince the family members of taking the test after the first diagnosis(these are well educated folks residing in satellite areas tier 1). Luckily no one else was infected.

I have seen both extremities - People who believe your PS (I am one of them) and people who do not believe your PS (my mom for example). I have observed that this position depends on whether or not if you have lost someone very close. People who have, don't want to be even near it.

We need to debunk myths of painful swab tests. Its less than 30 seconds.

This is the twist wrt., COVID19.

Once a person gets COVID and recovers, the immunity lasts for around 3 months and then the body again becomes vulnerable to contracting it again.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

One reason is that the tests are not reliable. One of our acquaintances voluntarily went for tests and was given a -ve for rapid test & a +ve for the other test where the result comes in 2-3 days. I have heard that some people have given samples at 2 centers and have got opposing results.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

I honestly believe if someone shows any symptoms he/she should get tested. And if the result turns out positive, he/she should get treated. The place of treatment can depend on the severity of infection. The patient can opt for home based treatment if facilities are ideal or opt for BBMP(in case of Bangalore) provided hospitalization or opt for his/her choice of hospital treatment if he/she can afford. I don't think the kind of initial stigma is attached anymore. I have a couple of colleagues who have recovered and are back to work and yes they are treated normally except that we follow certain protocols as advised by the doctors.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

Ignorance is bliss. People want to believe that they only have a common cold even if the symptoms overlap with COVID. No one I know of has told me they’ll get tested unless they have major symptoms which require hospital admission. The belief seems to be that you don’t have it unless you get tested. I used to get angry when I saw the cases rise everyday but now I’ve come to accept that it’s going to be here for at least another year. I try to remember that every death was a person full of life, but at the end you just get desensitised and see it as just a number in a column.

Think of it, even if a vaccine is available early next year, with such a huge population, it’s going to very hard for us to get it under control soon. All we can hope for is that, even if we or our loved ones get it, it’s as simple as a cold and that there are no complications.

Would you be willing to go to a BBMP-run quarantine center? Will you be ok with a family member going to a BBMP quarantine center if they test positive?

Has anyone here been in a government-run quarantine center/government hospital (not private hospitals or home quarantine) for covid? Or know someone from their family/friends/colleagues who have?

What was the experience like? Would be great to have first-hand accounts of people and their personal acquaintances rather than news reports/government circulars (which we can all google for) or 'friend-of-a-friend said' accounts.

[I think this is a relevant question, because I think more than the fear of the test or the results (though I'm sure there is a still a lot of fear about testing positive), I think people (me included) would not want to be forced to go to a government facility for treatment/recovery.]

PS: I have been treated at a government hospital, for another disease. It was many years ago yes, but not sure I'd want to go back. Would be happy to hear about good experiences from other people though.

5, Fear of genuiness of the results, like a false positive, which may result in one being shunted to the treatment center full of actually positive cases and subject to all the aforementioned.

Second that.

And it is a fact that, once you have tested positive regardless of whoever it is the attitude of the people surrounding you will change. Even after you tested negative. In addition, enforced hospitalization might cause much of a trauma to many people's life. Not necessarily everyone have other adults or responsible people to take care of the rest of the family including children and elderly during your absence. Needless to say once anyone got infected 99% of the times, their family members will also get isolated from the society.

So people tend to think that they can treat this just like another fever/cold. Many might not have work these days and they might be worried about the hospital expenses too.

The bitter truth and the bottom line is the lack of trust towards the system than being affected.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

Took it twice.

The first-time was mandatory and the second time was voluntary. The second time, I calmly packed my things and waited to get picked up. But, by God's grace, the fever which closely resembled the covid19 symptoms turned out to be something else.

I think that its mainly the concern for the famiky that get one panicky during the time .

An office colleague tested positive and BBMP promptly took him to Gnanabhathi hostel campus in Mysore road. What he told me after discharge was that there was no duty doctor and all were asked to keep mobiles ON. If conditions deteriorated then they had to call an ambulance ready to shift them to a bigger hospital. Beds had PPE plastic sheets and all patients were fed Bellebath 3 times a day ( not sure about the Bisi part). He said they gave him some tablets ( no names ) which burnt his tongue. There were guards at the exits and no one was allowed to even pass on home food.

After 10 days they just told him to go home. No testing no nothing even though he said he felt tired. After a week home and as per his own words " Mane oota thinthu seriaagipatithe" and he was back to work. Hope you speak Kannada .

PS : No charge for the whole treatment.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

I live in a society where we have had 3 COVID Cases in the past week. There are 2 more people who are vulnerable to it currently and have shown symptoms.
Now, the former group got themselves tested since they are all from a medical background (doctor or hospital staff) but the latter are still in the belief of the stigma.
Out of the 2 people, let us call one Mr.X. His mother-in-law and brother-in-law have recently had COVID and recovered from it, albeit in Delhi. Our society is quite supportive on testing and other necessities. Out of the 4 cases in the past, all of them have recovered and are completely healthy. Everyone was given complete support from the management and there has been no untowardly incident.
So, from what I believe here, people are more scared about what others will think rather than what will happen to them.

Last month my son showed symptoms and I immediately got him tested. Even before the results were out I got him admitted to a private hospital but fortunately while I was doing the admission process his result came out and it was negative. Turned out to be some kind of viral infection. So he was back home with a doctors prescription. So I wouldn't have waited for BBMP to knock on my door and allot a hospital bed based on their allotment matrix., even if I did I would have rejected if the hospital was not a good one. So I guess that answers your question on whether I would choose a BBMP allotted bed or not.

A relative of mine and his entire family tested positive in the month of August and they were sent to a PG converted into a quarantine facility near Narayana Hrudayalala on Hosur Road. Conditions were poorly managed but they got the needed treatment and they all recovered. He was not in a position to pay Rs.20k per bed per day per person(totally 4 family members) for 7 days at private hospitals.

My 2 colleagues and a colleague's wife who tested positive but remained mildly symptomatic were instructed to remain in home quarantine and were administered medication. The BBMP officials were calling them 3 to 5 times every day to check on their health status. They have all recovered and are back to work.

I am not sure of BBMP run quarantine centers, but now every private hospital has to allot a certain percentage of beds(I think about 25%) for covid treatment. So there are chances of getting treatment in a fairly good hospital for which the government pays through the covid fund., but provided this bed allotment happens through BBMP.

Re: Why are people scared to get a Covid-19 test done?

The same reason why people avoid going to hospitals or clinics nowadays. Even if the test is not conducted in a hospital, there is a fear that you may get covid from the testing facility.
And also the fear that if you are tested positive, you will be sent of to a dirty quarantine center
